Indonesia: Balinese Cooking Class Ubud, Bali
Unfortunate that I never knew, or thought, of taking a cooking class in Ubud. With one short day there, it would have been impossible to fit in but now you know and can sign up for one if there for several days.
It smelled wonderful, looked interesting and Bumi Bali allowed me to stand and watch for a while. They change the class menu daily, and just reserve 24 hours in advance.

What they have to say with our Cooking Schools In Bali :
“Sustainable Eco Tourism in the Real Bali”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2015 NEW
Ketut and Wayan have created a wonderful concept that is not beholden to corporate control!
This was without a doubt one of the best tourist experiences Bali has to offer. We were picked up where we were staying by Ketut and taken to a small local farmers market. The local market visit demonstrated the heart and mind of true Balinese, who do not hawk their goods to tourists as in lesser, larger markets. During the market visit, Ketut explained some of the differences between the local herbs and spices compared with those you might find at home and he offered us samples of some exotic fruits to try.
Then on to the farm! The farm tour was both interactive and interesting to see. Guest get to pick the produce they will cook with later. The produce is being grown proudly in a sustainable fashion without resort to pesticides which will poison our eco system and our bodies!
The cooking class itself was hands-on, entertaining and educational and it was great to interact with the staff and fellow travelers who enhanced the day. Wayan was our cooking instructor and was knowledgeable, friendly and witty. We cooked several dishes and can't wait to go home and recreate them!
It was truly a wonderful experience to spend the day with this family. This is a hands-on experience in Bali that should not be missed!

3. Balinese Sate Lilit ; Balinese traditional kebab
4. Opor Ayam, our version of Balinese Chicken curry

What they have to say with our Cooking Classes In Ubud :
“Cooking class and overnight stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2015
We were picked up in the afternoon for our overnight stay at the farm and the cooking class the next day
When we arrived at the farm we got a warm welcome from Wayan and the rest of the staff. We had an amazing home cooked meal and after we got directed to our room. The only remark i gave for the room is that there was no mosquito-net.
The next morning we were woken up with a plate of fresh fruit from the farm. We then got taken to the market where we would meet the rest of the class.
The market was not really special and we've seen better ones but we got told a lot of information about the roots and vegetables used in traditional balinese and Indonesian dishes. We already knew most of the information but for most people this was a nice add to the day
Then of to the farm. We got to pick al our ingredients for the dishes that we were going to make. This was very nice! After we were done the veggies got cleaned for us and we could start cooking
The cooking you mostly have to do by yourself. You work in pairs so the work is equally split. Our teacher walked by frequently and so did the ladies who also helped a lot!
The dishes were very good and tasty! The whole experience was a real add for the vacation and we hope we can do the vegetarian course some day!
What i liked the most of the day is that you can pick your veggies by yourself and because you work in pairs you get to eat your own dishes ( some people like very spicy some don't)
Nice finishing touch: you get to keep your apron and a little cookbook with the dishes you made that day

We made Tempe Manis, Pepes Chicken (usually it is with Ikan, or tuna), Lamar Bali Salad, Gado Gado, Chicken Curry, Chicken Sate, and Kolak Pisang. It was so cool using traditional cooking methods to make these dishes. I loved it when we cooked the sate with coconut shell - the smell was awesome! Every dish was also cooked with homemade coconut oil. Too good!

Best Cooking Class in Bali! Learning to Cook Tasty Balinese Food
Luck was on our side when we found a Balinese cooking class in Lovina Beach, Bali. For $75, Ketut, a local chef and all around great guy, took us to the local market, taught us how to barter, and then we cooked 5 dishes back as his restaurant. Also shout out to this new gopro mount it was super helpful for being discreet in the market!
The market was full of new sounds, smells, and sites and we found ourselves a bit lost and overwhelmed by it all. Of course, we know we are traveling right when we feel completely out of our element! :) Ketut taught us how to shop at the market. You make your first rounds, get a price, and then walk away, its too much. Then you come back around later on and ask again until they get to a price that you like. Also, we found out that at these early morning markets, the closer you can get to 9:00am the better as the market is getting ready to close and you can get the best deals.
We tasted many new produce and snacks and learned so much about the culture of Bali and Indonesia simply by being where the locals were. The market was truly a special and unique experience and we were thrilled to have found this opportunity.
After the market, we were greeted back at the restaurant by a pack of adorable and mischievous kittens. Attacking our toes and getting into all sorts of trouble, our new little hosts did their best to entertain us throughout the class.
We had heard that Ubud cooking classes were the best but we now have to disagree. We could not imagine this experience being any more authentic, real, enjoyable, and exciting. Ketut made the entire day a dream and we were honored to have such an incredible chef teach us (novices) how to cook this delicious Indonesian food.
Using kitchen tools dating back generations, Ketut patiently took us through the motions of creating a beautiful 5 course meal. As you will see, we were not vegan at the time and i can not wait to go back one day and get this lesson again but this time vegan. As a side note, we went vegan right after we got back from Bali - but thats another story for another time.
After the long and exciting day, my body was ready for a break. Whether from heat and dehydration or just my body adjusting to Bali, i struggled a bit to not feel dizzy and a little sick. I drank as much water as i possibly could and waited for the hardy meal to sink in to my system.
This day was so wonderful and we are so grateful for Ketut for taking us with him and showing us this experience. To find out more, check out their website:

FOOD OF BALI, COOKING CLASS | Canggu Cooking Retreat Vlog | & Indonesian Food
Time for a Bali cooking class! In this vlog we make and eat some Balinese and Indonesian food with Canggu Cooking Retreat...⬇ Click 'Show More' ✈ Live in Bali full-time:
We can highly recommend taking a Bali cooking class, this was such an incredible afternoon cooking a bunch of Balinese and Indonesian food! If you're coming to Bali and want to try some great local food you should definitely consider taking a cooking school afternoon! We can highly recommend Canggu Cooking Retreat, these guys were awesome:
We haven't taken many cooking classes around the world, but considering our love for Bali and the Balinese culture and food we thought it was about time... it made for the best afternoon in Canggu. Not to mention the food, Indonesian food is incredible and the food we made in this vlog (although probably more Balinese) was better than any restaurant we've eaten at recently! That should be motivation enough if you're in Canggu or coming to Bali to book a class haha.

Very hands on. come prepared to cook and feast. Definitely recommend it to any one interested in Balinese food.
???? Authentic Cooking Class in Ubud, Bali
Bali has a reputation as being a tropical paradise of dreams. The low cost of living, beautiful beaches and the friendly culture of the locals make Bali a top travel destination. Another huge pull attracting people to the idyllic island is the incredibly tasty cuisine. So, it’s no wonder that a Balinese cooking class is one of the best things to do!
We chose the half-day Ubud cooking class as it appeared to be the most authentic and included additional activities – such as a market tour and a visit to the rice fields. The reviews were great and the images were captivating. It was 100% worth it! The experience completely surpassed our expectations and will forever be remembered as one of our favorite days in Bali.

AMAZING Time in Ubud, Fire Dance, Cooking Class + More - Bali Vlog 2019
Another action packed few days in Ubud, Bali! We walk a stunning ridge in between rice fields, watch an epic cultural Fire Dance at night and also attend a Balinese Cooking Class! Never a dull moment in Bali.
The ridge walk starts just a short walk away from the Ubud Palace on the main street so it was super accessible and a must do. It leads you through the northern area of Ubud to a quiet little yoga/spa town that we grabbed some lunch in. There are scenic views a long the way, a rope swing and places to grab a bite to eat and a drink to cool down at the top. We even got the drone out a little bit since we weren't in the busy city! It was a great way to see some more of the countryside instead of being always surrounded by the traffic and city life so we really enjoyed the exercise and the time outside.
We also went to another dance after enjoying the Legong Dance last time. This time we saw the Fire Dance, also known as the Kecak Dance. It was probably one of our top highlights of all Bali. Sitting in an old temple area at night with the stars above you, while you watch a bunch of locals chant and do a slightly over an hour performance around a fire pedestal, how can you go wrong. There are no instruments used in this presentation just all acapella with 60+ males all sitting in a circle chanting. If you want to see some of the cultural side of Bali, and are in Ubud especially you cannot go wrong seeing this. The Kecak Fire Dance started at 7:30 so you have plenty of time to do day trips, grab a nice bite to eat and still top the day off with this amazing performance. (We actually went to watch twice while we were there, it's that good)
While in Ubud we attend a Balinese cooking class as well. We did one while in Thailand (video in the Thailand playlist) and really enjoyed it so wanted to do another similar one while in Bali. We got picked up at our hotel at about 8:30am, took a beautiful scenic drive up in to the mounts through the rice fields and jungles and arrived at our cooking school, Pemulan Bali. Pemulan Bali's cooking school is a community run organic garden that they gave us a tour around and showed us all of the different local ingredients growing that we then picked to use. They had all kinds of produce growing we saw also we didn't use, even massive jack fruit hanging from the trees and sugar cane palms dangling down. Once we had gathered the required ingredients our guide lead us through the recipe book. We made 5 different authentic Bali dishes at the cooking school and they were all delicious. Cooking classes are a good way to also familiarize yourself with the foods you have been eating and will be eating and really know what a high quality dish would taste like. We had originally found the Sates had a little grainy texture when we would order them, and then through the class we learned they actually mix in coconut shavings into the ground meat and that is what gave it that texture so that was cool. After a big day of cooking and eating our dishes (they also sold beverages there besides just water, that was a neat touch) it was another van ride back to our hotel. We got back in a little after 6:00pm so it was a full day of seeing things and learning, meals and transportation included, all for like $30 each so we found that totally worth it and would highly recommend a cooking class as something to do in any country you are visiting to really get that authentic feel.
Busy days in Ubud but super fun and hope you all out there enjoy the content. It was another real fun one for us with all the activities and food haha.
More to come your way soon here, with a little more Ubud and then we're off to Gili Air after. Gili Air is a tiny little island where they don't even allow engines on the island to disturb the peace so i'm sure you'll all find that super cool too soon enough!
Cheers friends and until we meet next! (Saturday ???? )
Your pals,
Luke and Alysha

Bali Asli specialises in traditional Balinese food and obtains its ingredients fresh from the local market each day or from its own garden or the neighbours garden.
It has been voted number 1 restaurant in Karangasem regency in the East of Bali.
Every cooking class is an adventure themed to provide insight into local culture and village life. Typically an adventure whether it is a trek to a local village or fishing in jukung takes place in the morning before returning to Bali Asli for the cooking class and lunch.
Bali Asli sits on a small rise overlooking rice paddy fields with majestic Mount Agung beyond. The food is amazing but the view is spectacular.
Contact us to book your cooking class adventure, lunch or just sunset cocktails on the verandah.
