Sephardic Sevilla
It is quite possible that Seville's Jewish community is, if not the oldest, certainly one of the oldest in Spain. Híspalis (Seville) was, in fact, a place of unrivalled importance on the Iberian Peninsula, with the Roman general Escipión later making it his capital. The Jews must have been attracted by the great city which gave its name to all Hispania.
Seville was Spain's most populous city, the intellectual capital of the kingdom.
Seville's Jewish community was one of the largest and without doubt the most industrious of all. At that time, Seville not only stood out as a result of its trade links, which flourished due to the importance of its river, but also thanks to its medical schools, where Spain's most eminent doctors came to study, including those from Córdoba, such as the great Averroes.

THE OLD JEWISH QUARTERS - Seville Spain.MPG
The Jewish Quarter is located around the Cathedral. It is filled with small winding streets and is generally regarded as the most charming part of the city, but it is also fairly touristy.
Me and my wife together with uncle, visited this little corner in Easter of 2011, Charming place. Not enough time to explore as always when you are with a tour. Britannia Tours from Malta tried to show us as much as they could, with the tour guide Manwel Grima at his best.

Spain - Seville Flamenco Dancing 1
In Seville we had a very exciting evening watching flamenco dancing.
Flamenco is a style of music and dance native to many regions of Spain especially Andalusia. Along with its Spaniard origins, Gypsy, Byzantine, Sephardic and Moorish elements have often been cited as influences in the development of flamenco. In the Moorish era , Andalusia attracted musicians from all Islamic countries. One such was Zyriab, who revolutionized the shape and techniques of oud (Middle-eastern stringed instrument), adding a fifth string. This Moorish guitar was the precurser to the flamenco guitar and then the modern classical guitar. The traditional Catholic church chant called the Mozarabic chant gave roots to flamenco singing. When Spain colonized the New World, they brought back Latin America dance steps and music. All these influences over centuries evolved to the music, singing and dancing of the flamenco.
