Kevin's Adventures In The Wasatch Mountains
The product of 20 million years of geologic faulting, volcanic activity, and glaciation, the Wasatch Mountains, the western range of the Rocky Mountains, stretch across Utah from the Bear River in the north to Mount Nebo near Nephi in central part of the state. Most elevations along the range are generally between 9,000 and 10,000 feet; Mount Nebo is the highest peak at 11,877 feet. Some of the other significant peaks from north to south include Willard Peak, Mount Ogden, Bountiful Peak, Mount Olympus, Lone Peak, Mount Timpanogos, Provo Peak, Spanish Fork Peak, and Loafer Mountain.
Since the earliest days of Mormon settlement, the majority of Utah's population has chosen to settle along the range's western front, where numerous river drainages exit the mountains. The mountains were a vital source of water, timber, and granite for early settlers. Today they continue to serve as the primary source of water for the populous Wasatch Front, and to provide year-round recreational opportunities to residents and visitors alike.
The mountains were first viewed by white men in 1776 when Fathers Francisco Atanasio Dominguez and Silvestre Velez de Escalante traversed the range, exiting near present-day Spanish Fork. The next entry into the mountains was during the 1820s by fur trappers and traders from Santa Fe and Taos; among them Etienne Provost, from whom the city of Provo takes its name. Following Provost into the Wasatch came British and American trappers, including Peter Skene Ogden, William Ashley, Jedediah Smith, James Bridger, James Clyman, among others. The competition between British and American fur interests throughout the west became moot when, by 1840, silk replaced beaver fur as the height of fashion.
In 1846, having left Fort Bridger and following the instructions of frontier entrepreneur Lansford Hastings, the members of the ill-fated Donner-Reed Party hacked out a wagon road from near the site of present-day Henefer and down into the Salt Lake Valley. Eleven months later, in July 1847, the first Mormon emigrants negotiated this same wagon road in only three days.
When Mormon loyalty to the United States was questioned during the Civil War, Colonel Patrick Connor and his Third California Infantry were ordered to Utah to establish Fort Douglas at Salt Lake City. With Connor's encouragement, the Californians spent much of their time prospecting for minerals in the Wasatch and other areas near the city.
In 186, prospectors discovered silver, lead, and zinc deposits in the canyons and mountains southeast of Salt Lake City, particularly in Big Cottonwood, Little Cottonwood, and Parley's Canyons. By 1870 towns like Alta and Park City had sprung up and taken on the aspect of other mining towns found throughout the West. Alta at one time supported twenty-six saloons and six breweries, while the major portion of Park City's municipal revenues were received from saloon licenses and fines for prostitution.
After experiencing years of decline, Alta and Park City have experienced something of a rebirth as winter ski resorts. Indeed, skiing has become one of Utah's major attractions, prompting the development of many major and world renowned resorts in the Wasatch Range, where snow has been claimed to be the world's finest for skiing.
Escalante 2, Backpacking Utah, Hiking Coyote Gulch, Climbing scary Jacob Hamblin A w My Own Frontier
Escalante 2, Backpacking Utah, Hiking Coyote Gulch, Climbing scary Jacob Hamblin Arch with My Own Frontier, A Canyon Country High Route, The Scary and dangerous Stuff in 4K
This is the second of two videos from an 8 day backpacking and canyoneering loop in the Escalante area October 2019. Me and my buddy Joey Coconato of My Own Frontier complete Steve Allens Escalante South route over a period of 8 very dry days, there has been no rain in the area for over 100 days. We follow the challenging route from Crack in the Wall, through Coyote Gulch, crossing the Escalante River, heading up Stevens Canyon and up the Baker trail to the top of the Waterpocket Fold. From there we head to Cliff Point for some amazing 360 views of Canyon Country, we could see Monument valley and Navajo Mountain in the south, Boulder Mountain and Powell Point to the north, Henry Mountains, Bears Ears, Lake Powell and even the La Sal Mountains to the east. This second video starts with a beautiful but windy sunrise at Cliff Point, and then we get into The Scary Stuff, canyon hopping, climbing and traversing part of the trip from Cliff to Georges Camp Canyon, down the very scary bighorn sheep trails and across the Escalante to Ezra Mc Bench, Fools Canyon, Kings Bench and back to Coyote Gulch for the climb out by Jacob Hamblin Arch and the end of the trip. We found water, but did we fall off a cliff on the bighorn sheep trail, any of the class 4 and 5 climbs, or up the Jacob Hamblin Arch?

River House, Snake House, San Juan River, Utah. Cedar Mesa, Utah. Bears Ears National Monument
River House or Snake House as some have referred to it lies on the bank of the San Juan River. If you drive all the way to it 4x4 or high clearance will be necessary. Expect lots of sand and a steep rocky climb at one point.
Since this ruin is popular for those that run the San Juan River it has been well traveled. However I found it most interesting and in pretty good shape. There is a huge panel just down stream from the cliff dwellings that are worth seeing.
Travel Adventure: Wasatch Mountian State Park on ATV's
Outside of Heber Utah, just about 40 minutes away from Salt Lake City, the mountains climb out of the ground, towering over the valley below. At the base of these impressive peaks is Wasatch Mountain State Park, a highly developed are that offers golf, hiking, geocaching, and picnicking. The ATV trails the park offers are what really surprise visitors though.
Rob Scher lives within a half hour drive of the park, in the hills around Park City. He didn't start out there however. In fact, his journey began thousands of miles away and eventually brought him right where he wanted to be. He isn't alone either...
Skyline Drive, The Backbone of Utah

Our last two days on the 2012 JK-Experience would take us over the Mackinac Bridge to Michigan's Upper Peninsula and then to its eastern most point where we would cross the St. Mary's river by ferry to the largest fresh water island in the United States, Drummond Island. In addition to having an awesome off-road park like Turtle Ridge, Drummond Island hosts over 117 miles of trails that meander through boreal forests, across glacial rock deposits and stone ridges carved out by Lake Huron. It truly is one of the most beautiful places you will ever see and, we were happy to relax, explore and end our JK-Experience there.
We hope you enjoyed our JK-Experience HEARTLAND series and come back soon to watch other films that we make.
The 2012 Off Road Evolution JK-Experience presented by Nitto Tire was also made possible from support of the following sponsors: AdArt, ARB, ATX Wheels, Daystar, Discount Tire, Dynatrac, Dynomax, EVO MFG, Hi-Lift, Hora Zero, Impact, King, Mastercraft, Project-JK, Rancho, Rockstar, Superchips, Skyjacker, Tochmate and WARN.

3 Kivas, Cedar Mesa, Utah. Bears Ears National Monument
Three Kivas is the name I have given this ruin for my reference. Its location is in one of the many canyons that litter the Cedar Mesa area.
In 1998 we found this site as we explored the canyon. The ruins are spread out for a long distance along the same bench. At one end there are three kivas. These kivas are not intact, the roofs have been caved in. However there is much left of them.
One thing that stands out about this ruin is the deep, steep, red canyon that it resides in. In the video I refer to a tree, dead tree, that is lodged into a crack. The old log is very stable and has been there for a good twenty years. If you are afraid of heights this is not the place for you. After the tree some steep slick rock must be scrambled to gain access to the site. A fall would be very bad.
