In The Loop Quick Looks - Chicago's Craft Beer Craze
Chicago is emerging as a national leader in the exploding business of craft beer. The second city is second only to Portland, Oregon, in the number of craft breweries--more than 150. And, according to Crain’s, more commercial real estate is devoted to independent brewing here than in any other city in the country.
Illinois Beer - A Story Of Scale
To celebrate the 6th year of Chicago Craft Beer Week, we wanted to take a look at the different scales of breweries in the great state of Illinois.
With the craft beer industry in Illinois, and specifically Chicago, growing at such an impressive pace, we felt it only necessary to showcase the different sizes and personalities of some of the finest breweries in the state.
We hope you enjoy these brewers' stories and know breweries of all sizes and shapes are popping up around our state - so get out there and Drink Illinois Beer!

Wine Tasting at Glunz Family Winery and Cellars in Chicago
Glunz Family Winery and Cellars has roots that stretch all the way back to 1880s, far before the shop's first wine tasting. After emigrating from Germany to the United States in 1887, Luis Glunz opened his own wine, beer, and spirits shop in Chicago. In 1993, his great-grandchildren would follow in his entrepreneurial foot steps by opening Glunz Family Winery and Cellars—which first started as a winery and storage facility. As more people stopped by, the owners incorporated a tasting room where visitors could sample and purchase their wines.

Looking for something nice to surprise your beer loving significant? Thanks to the Chicago Beer Experience's beer tour you can embark on a journey to discover Chicago history while learning about beer's hoppy goodness while tasting several delicious microbrews! During the experience, guests visit four establishments: an Irish Pub, a beer-and-bacon bar, a neighborhood beer and wine store, and a punk rock bar dating pre-prohibition, and taste 16 different beers, most of which are Chicago or Midwestern craft beers. Trained guides lead the tours, weaving in information on history and a little beer 101 along the way. The walking tour covers approximately a half mile, is three hours, and takes place in the Lincoln Park/Lakeview neighborhood and is a little off the beaten track. And if that wasn't enough, the tour pairs four beers with four different types of bacon at one of the establishments! Chicago, history, beer, bacon; need I say more?

The vibe at Board Room is both high-energy and high-class thanks to its stellar sound and lighting systems and professionally trained staff. Tables overlook the dj booth and if your Valentine's date is getting too hot dancing the night away the rain shower effect that is incorporated into the wood décor adds a nice, cooling effect! Now, let's get to my favorite part.... Board room encourages its clients, yes you! to dance ON TOP OF your booth! Some would call this lounge river north's Boutique nightclub. We say ending the night with bottle service, beautiful staff and a laser show will captivate the most hardened of hearts!

For Lobster and Romance, perfect to celebrate the love holiday this week I think Acadia in the South loop is the ideal date spot. If you've been to the Chicago Auto Show at McCormick Place this week and needed a close walking place to warm up from the cold, Acadia's bar is also very amazing. The sophisticated elegance of Acadia provides a perfect backdrop for its contemporary and classic cuisine from Chef Ryan McCaskey. An open kitchen and wine room reinforce Acadia's commitment to quality food and wine. Chef McCaskey spent his early culinary days up in Maine, so needless to say the man knows lobster! His lobster pie and Lobster roll is one of the best I've had and is sure to impress even the most finicky of Valentine's Day dates.

Goose Island Honker's Ale - Beer Review
BBA T-SHIRTS ARE FOR SALE:
The Better Beer Authority tackles Honker's Ale from the Goose Island Brewery in Chicago, Illinois. We discuss the basic ingredients in beer. Why do Scott and Adam clash over whether the flavor achieves its goals? And, why do I have to blur out their hand gestures? All this and more in this riveting beer review!
Partial Transcript: On Tap Honkers Ale.
Hi. Im James Knott and this is your Better Beer Authority. Today we are talking about Honkers Ale from the Goose Island Beer Company in Chicago, Illinois. Goose Island operates two brew pubs in Chicago and ships its beers to 15 states and the U.K..
Honkers Ale is an English Style Bitter with 4.2% ABV, thats Alcohol by Volume, and 30 IBUs, or International Bitterness Units.
Goose Island says that this ale was inspired by visits to English country pubs. Theyve added wheat to the grain bill for a little creaminess and roasted barley for toastiness on the backend.
Before we discuss Honkers Ale, lets do a quick Beer 101.
While there are tons of variations and exceptions, the majority of beer consumed today is based on four main ingredients:
Water
Barley
Hops
And Yeast
Well discuss the roles of each of these ingredients in-depth in future episodes. But first, lets talk about Honkers Ale.
Q&A: Scott, Hows the drinkability of this beer? Is this a Burger Beer?
Honkers Ale receives (???) quacks on the BBA scale. Dont forget to leave your opinion of this fine ale in the comment section.
Id like to recommend a book to those of you who are trying to learn more about beer.
Tasting Beer by Randy Mosher does a great job of describing the history of beer, how to taste it, what to eat it with and what to appreciate in the different styles. Its a fairly easy read with great illustrations.
It will take you from beer novice to beer snob in two hops of a barleys malt.
You can find out more about this book at BetterBeerAuthority.com.
