Beijing's Prominent Art Gallery Provides a Unique Portal into Chinese Art Culture
A portal to contemporary Chinese art like no other.
Red Gate Gallery stands alone as the oldest and most respected contemporary art gallery in China. Founded by Brian Wallace in 1991, this breathtaking exhibition space is Beijing's first private contemporary art gallery. Located in Dongbianmen, Red Gate Gallery is set in the historic 600 year old Ming Dynasty watchtower - the only structure to survive the destruction of the city wall. Collections featured in the gallery present articles of China's contemporary artistic expression in conjunction with traditional influence. Through his connections to the Chinese Art Community, Mr. Wallace established the premier artist residency program in 2001 which exhibits the best of Chinese contemporary art while facilitating cultural exchange and dialogue between China and the rest of the world.

Midnight in Peking - Paul French
Who killed Pamela Werner?
On a frozen night in January 1937, in the dying days of colonial Peking, a body was found under the haunted watchtower. It was Pamela Werner, the teenage daughter of the city's former British consul Edward Werner. Her heart had been removed.
A horrified world followed the hunt for Pamela's killer, with a Chinese-British detective team pursuing suspects including a blood-soaked rickshaw puller, the Triads, and a lascivious grammar school headmaster. But the case was soon forgotten amid the carnage of the Japanese invasion... by all but Edward Werner. With a network of private investigators and informers, he followed the trail deep into Peking's notorious Badlands and back to the gilded hotels of the colonial Quarter.
Some 75 years later, deep in the Scotland Yard archives, British historian Paul French accidentally came across the lost case file prepared by Edward Werner. Unveiling an undercover sex cult, heroin addicts and disappearing brothels, the truth behind the crime can now be told - and is more disturbing than anyone could imagine.
Not just the unputdownable story of a savage murder, Midnight in Peking is a sweepingly evocative account of the end of an era.

Pingyao 平遥 The Eternal City, China
Pingyao dates back 2,700 years, and is one of the best preserved ancient cities in the world. During the Qing Dynasty this city was a financial center of China. It is still inhabited by 50,000 residents and is renowned for its well-preserved ancient city wall, and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Pingyao still retains its city layout from the Ming and Qing dynasties, conforming to a typical Ba gua pattern. More than 300 sites in or near the city have ancient ruins. Preserved Ming- and Qing-style residences number close to 4,000. The streets and storefronts still largely retain their historical appearance.
The city walls of Pingyao were constructed in the 3rd year of the Hongwu Emperor (1370). The walls have six barbican gates. The north and south sides have one gate each. The east and west sides have two gates each.
This pattern is similar to that of a turtle (the head, tail and four legs), earning Pingyao the moniker Turtle City. The walls measure about 12 metres high, with a perimeter of 6,000 metres. A 4-metre wide, 4-metre deep moat can be found just outside the walls. Aside from the four structured towers at the four corners, there are also 72 watchtowers and more than 3,000 battlements.

Chinese President Accompanies Indian PM on Visit to Cultural City
Chinese President Xi Jinping accompanied visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a visit to Xi'an, capital city of Shaanxi Province and Xi's hometown, on Thursday.
Xi accompanied Modi on the visit to Da Ci'en Temple and the Wild Goose Pagoda, where the famous Chinese Buddhist monk Xuan Zang presided over translation of Buddhist scriptures and expounded Buddhist doctrines in the Tang Dynasty (618-904).
The Da Ci'en Temple has witnessed a long history of friendly exchanges between China and India, said Xi, vowing to push forward the friendly ties between the two countries.
Modi said he was deeply impressed by the Xi'an visit and presented saplings of Bodhi tree to the temple.
Xi said the Bodhi trees presented by ex-Indian Prime Minister Javaharlal Nehru in 1954 continue to thrive today and have become a telling symbol of the friendship between the two peoples.
After the visit, Modi was accorded a traditional Tang Dynasty welcome at the Xi'an city wall, and Xi welcomed him at the watchtower of the wall.
The two leaders also enjoyed a brilliant art performance staged by Chinese artists.
The current three-day tour is Modi's first China visit. Premier Li Keqiang and top legislator Zhang Dejiang will also meet him in Beijing on Friday.
