Beijing: City life, gay apps, and live streaming girls | VPRO Documentary
In Beijing, city life takes often more place online than offline. You can still not come out of the closet in real life, but live as a gay online. In Beijing gays meet via app and girls live stream when they sing or just talk to the audience. How are gays experiencing life in a city as Beijing, where being gay is still not accepted? And what is it, that makes young girls live streaming?
In the past 30 years, life for people in China has changed drastically. The third world country has become one of the world leaders and still, most of us don´t know a lot about China and their population. Where is this gigantic country headed? And what do ordinary Chinese appreciate or value?
In the second episode Ruben Terlou arrives in Beijing, where he watches a number of popular live streamers and meets the man behind China's largest internet platform for homosexuals.
Without a smartphone life in the big city has become virtually impossible: it is your debit card, your city card, your ID, your entertainment. And more importantly, your smartphone puts you in touch with like-minded people. Gay people no longer have to go to shadowy parks to find a partner. But the question is how long the government allows this online freedom.
In the big city of Beijing Ruben hires a golden bicycle and meets the fighting mother of a Chinese lala (lesbian). The city is overwhelming so that you can easily disappear. Oddly, that´s also what makes it so special. But where you can disappear, you can be yourself. As long as you don´t stand out.

Beijing, China - Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Monument to the Heroes, Forbidden City
Although severely jet lagged, we didn't want to waste our first day of sightseeing in Beijing. We stayed nearby and walked to Tianamen Square and visited the Forbidden City.
Tianamen Square is the largest city square in the world and has been the site of many events. The most notable was in 1989, when a pro-democracy movement in China saw thousands of protesters gather there. Hundreds of protesters were killed by Government troops in the streets leading from the square.* Ironically, Tianamen Square is named after the Tianamen Gate, which means Gate of Heavenly Peace. Tianamen Gate sits to the north and separates the square from the Forbidden City.

Public Parks in China
Public parks are so important to the urban Chinese as most live in apartments. Public parks in China are a microcosm of Chinese culture.
Whether one visits at day break, mid afternoon or early evening, countless traditional Chinese activities are being performed or enjoyed by average citizens. These include calligraphy, tai chi, opera, fan dancing, ping pong, badminton, mahjong, and traditional and ballroom dancing, just to name a few.
In the early morning many (most tend to be seniors or retired people) are doing some sort of exercise on apparatus that seem rather foreign to a western eye.
Many elderly men bring their birds in bamboo cages, hang them in the trees and let them serenade the passers-by.
In the afternoon mahjong and card-playing are the most popular.
The early evening brings out the dancing crowd complete with instructors featuring both Chinese and western music.

Beijing's frozen lakes attract China's bravest swimmers
As the thermometer drops to freezing in China's capital, it seems some people just can't wait to take their clothes off and experience even colder temperatures. Throughout winter, Beijing's frozen lakes draw elderly swimmers who say the secret behind their good health is an early morning, ice-cold dip. Duration: 01:57

Child trapped in flood-stricken car rescued by passer-by
Last Wednesday during torrential rainstorms that swept across northern and central China, reporters rushed to report on flashfloods in Beijing. Under one bridge in the city, they saw a black car stuck in the rising floodwaters, with the driver and a child passenger calling for help. As the rain increased, the car’s doors could not be opened. A man waded through the rising waters to rescue the child, before passers-by rescued the driver from danger and pushed the vehicle out of the flood.

Beijing protesters throw leaflets at flag raising ceremony ahead of NPC
Protesters released leaflets on Wednesday morning in Tiananmen Square as nearly 3,000 delegates are attending the annual meetings of the National People's Congress (NPC).
The protesters crossed the security cordon around the podium where the Chinese national flag is raised every day in ceremonies that take place at sunrise and at dusk.
It was unclear what their motivations were, but they released a few dozen fliers that were quickly picked up by security officers who drove away the protesters from the square and asked the numerous passers-by to delete their pictures and videos from cameras.
The annual session of the country's top legislature opened on Wednesday in the Chinese capital (9 a.m. local time; 0100 GMT) marking Xi Jinping's first year as the country's President.
Premier Li Keqiang is expected to deliver his first government work report to the legislators setting the target for GDP (gross domestic product) growth as well as major economic and social development goals.
The NPC is made up of nearly three thousand deputies elected from each of China's 23 provinces and four autonomous regions.
The National Congress usually meets only once a year to elect or remove members of the government, enact or amend laws and to discuss economic and social developments.

First Time in Beijing: 7 Things I Wish I Knew 第一次去北京:7件我早該注意的事
One of my shortcomings is that I am never fully prepared before traveling to a foreign country. Though, I also consider it a blessing (or an excuse) because the impact of culture shock will be as authentic as it is shocking. Once again, I did not research about Beijing nor China before the trip. During my five days here, I've enjoyed the companion of the local people and found out a few unexpected customs here in Beijing.

Kid’s fingers ‘bitten’ by escalator raises safety concerns in China
A one-year-old girl in China had five fingers crushed after accidentally getting them stuck in an escalator. The shocking incident occurred in a shopping hall in Beijing on March 20. Whilst playing the toddler tried to walk up escalator going down and fell onto it, causing her fingers to be trapped between the escalator steps and crushed .
The accident follows two high profile escalator related deaths last year of a four year-old boy who became wedged under an escalator handrail at a metro station, and a woman who died when she fell through an escalator landing. In 2014, a report by the country’s Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), found that more than 110,000 escalators had potential safety issues. The AQSIQ said there were 49 escalator accidents in 2014 that claimed a total of 37 lives.
