HOUHAI LAKE
Houhai is the largest of the three lakes of Shichahai area of central Beijing, interconnected with each other through canals and bridges namely Xihai(West Lake), Houhai(Back Lake) and Qianhai(Front Lake). The total area of these lakes with recreation spaces and roads is 363 acres out of which water area is 84 acre and green area is 28 acre. In old times, these lakes used to be part of Grand Canal of China which is the longest canal in the world. Once celebrities, princes, renowned public figures, artists and intellectuals used to live around Houhai Lake. In the past many palaces and temples were constructed around the lake because of its scenic beauty and central location in the city, few of which still exist such as Dazang Longhua Temple, Guangfu Temple, Huitong Temple, Houshen Temple, Prince Gong’ Mansion, Prince Chun’s Palace, the house of Song Ching-ling (Mrs. Sun Yat-sen), the residence of Guo Moruo, etc. During the winter, the water of the lake is frozen and used for skating and ice-games. During spring and summer thousands of lush green willow trees around the lake present the mesmerizing effect on the visitors.
In Beijing it is the best area for entertainment, amusement and fun, particularly famous for night clubs, bars, pubs, dance theaters, restaurants, ice-cream parlors, food stalls and romantic activities and thus is alive till late night with thousands of foreign and local visitors hanging around the Silver Ingot Bridge (Yin Ding Qiao) which links Houhai and Qianhai Lakes. This bridge is the center part of enjoyment in Shichahai and is always overcrowded day and night. It is one of the greatest points of attraction for tourists in Beijing. A leisure stroll around Houhai Lake can take an hour or so. Lot of pleasure activities, board & card games, table tennis, cycling, romance, fishing, boating, bathing, etc. can be seen in and around the lake, particularly on weekends.

Beijing Shichahai Area & Lakes 2-4-2016
BEIJING
SHICHAHAI
We visited Beijing, capital of China for 7 days from 1st to 8th April, 2016. We selected Shichahai for our residence which is undoubtedly the best area of Beijing, oldest, central, historical, most scenic, cultural, best preserved and beautiful. The Municipal Government of Beijing declared this area as “Historical and Cultural Scenic District”. Building skyscrapers and high rise buildings is prohibited here. Therefore, only old style traditional streets and houses with courtyards can be seen here. It is rightly called backyard paradise by local Chinese.
It has three big lakes, interconnected with each other namely Xihai(pronounced as Shehai means West Lake), Houhai(Back Lake) and Qianhai(pronounced Chinhai means Front Lake). Houhai is the largest of the three. The total area of these lakes is 363 acres. In old times, these lakes used to be part of Grand Canal of China which is the longest canal in the world. In fact Shichahai means ‘ten temple lakes’ since before the communist revolution there used to be ten temples around the lake because of its scenic beauty and central location in the city, few of which still exist. The total area of these lakes with recreation area and roads is 363 acres out of which water area is 84 acre and green area is 28 acre. In old times, these lakes used to be part of Grand Canal of China which is the longest canal in the world. Once celebrities, princes, renowned public figures, artists and intellectuals used to live around Houhai Lake. Bell and Drum Towers, the ancient timepieces, are located here. During the winter, the water of the lake is frozen and used for skating. The area around Qianhai Lake is particularly famous for night clubs, bars, pubs, dance theaters, restaurants, ice-cream parlors, food stalls, trap houses and romantic activities and thus is alive till late night with thousands of foreign and local visitors hanging around the Silver Ingot Bridge (Yin Ding Qiao) which links Houhai and Qianhai Lakes. Hutongs are reflections of the old Beijing. Narrow alley ways pulse with the rhythm of everyday life. Old walled courtyards fronted by massive red doors are a pleasure to wander through and get lost in . They are all being destroyed by the Chinese government, as are many of Chinas ancient history, and will soon be a thing of the past. There was still a nice selection of them on the north side of Houhai Lakes. The lakes themselves are a peaceful retreat in the middle of this hectic city. Willow tree branches sway in the wind and kiss the water, seniors exercise on machines, practice Thai Chi and fish while Chinese tourists stroll around the lake holding hands and taking pictures.
That night the rains came. Rain brings a different energy to a city. A peacefulness, a calm. Life continues as usual as the street vendors huddle under umbrellas and makeshift tarps shielding their produce, meats, electronics, and gadgets from the rising puddles waiting for the next customer to come, and they do. It was business as usual. Travel allows you to step into people’s lives for just a moment. It is a very voyeuristic way to spend your time. Still this was not the China we came to observe. In fact, it is not China at all that we are here to see. Tomorrow we will board another plane for a four-hour flight west to the autonomous region of Xinjiang.
