Belgrad Forest Istanbul | ON FOOT Ep. 01
Belgrad Forest[1] (Turkish: Belgrad Ormanı) is a mixed deciduous forest lying 15 kilometers north-west of Istanbul, Turkey. It is named after the thousands of Serbs who were deported from the city of Belgrade in 1521 when it fell to the Ottomans. Geographically, the forest is located at the easternmost point of the Thracian Peninsula. Forest terrain is divided between Sarıyer and Eyüp districts. Several historical reservoirs lie within the forest.

Belgrad Ormanı, İstanbul Avrupa Yakası'nda yer alan doğal oluşumlu ağaçlık bölgedir.
Orman adını, Kanuni Sultan Süleyman'ın Sırbistan seferi dönüşü beraberinde getirdiği Belgradlıların yerleştirildiği Belgrad köyünden almaktadır. Köy sakinlerinin su kaynaklarını kirlettiği anlaşılınca padişah buyruğuyla köy taşınmış; bu tarihten sonra ormanın ve barındırdığı su kaynaklarının korunması için ilk kez resmî önlemler alınmıştır.
Belgrad Ormanı, İstanbul ve çevresinde canlı varlığı açısından da önemli bir bölgedir. Çok sayıda kuş, sürüngen ve memelinin doğal yaşama ortamıdır. Ormana yönelik koruma tedbirleri ve hayvanlar için koyulan av yasaklarıyla, tehlikede olan türler burada rahatça üreme olanağı bulabilmektedir.
Su varlığı bakımından da oldukça zengin bir coğrafyası olan Belgrad Ormanları, irili ufaklı pek çok akarsuya ev sahipliği yapmaktadır. Bu akarsulardan bazılarının önüne Osmanlı döneminde bentler kurulmuştur. Orman sınırları içinde farklı noktalara dağılmış toplam 6 adet tarihî bent bulunmaktadır.
Exploring The Belgrad Forest - Attaturk Arboretum
I travelled to Istanbul in turkey to see the history and ecology of the Belgrad forest. The forest is very large at around 5,300 hectares containing many nature parks itself and is home to a plethora of bird, animal and plant species. The forest is named ofter thousands serbians who were dsiplaced from the city of belgrade during the ottoman era. The forest was crucial to Istanbul's water supply during the byzantine and ottoman periods making the forest a stunning combination of nature, old ruins, aqueducts and dams.
The Ataturk Aboretum within the forest forms a living museum and collection of the most important and fascinating species across different continents such as endangered redwoods to ginkgos and bird of paradise flowers, some of which are only found here at the Aboretum! This was all created to aid research at the university of Istanbul.

Located in the European side of the city, the Belgrad Forest are the lungs of Istanbul. much like Polonezköy, the Belgrad Forest is also a popular destination for one-day excursions or over weekend breakfast and hiking tours.
