Toxic foam inundates Bellandur Lake in India
Large amount of foam was seen floating on Bengaluru’s Bellandur Lake, a 1.4-square-mile lake, that for years has been polluted by chemical and sewage waste. Containing oil and phosphorus, the smooth puffs carry a strong stench, which has been blamed for people in the city suffering from nose burns and itchy skin. What’s worse, the froth is flammable, with images showing that the lake had caught fire in May this year.

Bengaluru Lake: The Froth of Death
After the city's heaviest August rain in a century, two giant lakes in Bengaluru are spewing so much toxic foam that residents who live near them have reportedly complained that they are having to stay indoors. On Wednesday, the froth, a stinking cocktail of chemicals and untreated sewage dumped in the lakes, rose to over 10 feet in the Varthur Lake, spilling over a tall fence erected to keep the foam away from motorists on the city's Whitefield road. A day before the 1000-acre Bellandur Lake had hurled froth at motorists.

Bengaluru's Bellandur Lake has generated more than a water body's fair share of headlines - the pollution regularly causes it to froth so heavily that the foam can be seen on roads nearby; at other times, flames leap off the water. But the size of the fire that erupted at 4 pm yesterday stumped even experts, with large, rolling clouds of smoke serving as a major impediment for those driving on the roads nearby, as well as firemen. The fire, it is believed, began in the clumps of dry hyacinth and weed around the lake.

At Bengaluru's 1,000-acre Bellandur Lake, infamous for pollution and toxic foam, a massive fire broke out this afternoon. It took more than 5,000 army personnel and fire-fighting equipment to bring the fire that raged for seven hours under control. Videos of the fire show thick black smoke rising in the sky above the lake. Later in the evening, the fire started again at two places in the lake, which is Bengaluru's largest. No loss to life or property has been reported.
