Belum Caves derives its name from Bilum Sanskrit word for caves. In Telugu language, it is called Belum Guhalu. Belum Caves has a length of 3229 meters, making it the second largest natural caves in Indian Subcontinent. Belum Caves have long passages, spacious chambers, fresh water galleries and siphons. The caves reach its deepest point (120 ft from entrance level) at the point known as Patalganaga.
Belum Caves is located at Belum Village in Kolimigundla Mandal of Kurnool district in State of Andhra Pradesh, India. Kolimigundla is situated 3 km from Belum Caves.
Belum caves was formed due to erosion in limestone deposite in the area by Chitravati River, millions of years ago. This limestone caves was formed due to action of carbonic acid — or weakly acidic groundwater formed due to reaction between limestone and water. The carbonic acid dissolved minerals in the limestone rocks in the area. The presence of river Chitravati in area for a long period of time enable a vast labyrinth of underground cave to form. Now Chitravati River flows almost 30 km south of Belum. Belum Caves are located on a flat agricultural field in Belum Village. There are 3 well like cavities in plain agricultural fields. The central cavity is the main entrance to the caves. However, the locals report hundreds of cavities in the area. The walls of the cave are very smooth as result of erosion by river.

BELUM CAVES | INDIA’s BIGGEST CAVES | KURNOOL, ANDHRA PRADESH | Wanderlust On Wheel
It was a one day ride covering a round trip of 650kms from Bangalore to BELUM CAVES which is located in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. As per sources Belum Caves are the largest and longest cave system in India open for the tourists. The second largest caves in India after the Krem Liat Prah in Meghalaya and famous for their unique formations. Till date more than three and a half kilometres of the cave has been successfully explored of which only a kilometer and half is accessible to common tourists.
The deepest point of Belum Caves 46 meters at a certain point inside the cave, which is known as Pataalaganga.
Belum Caves was in my wish list since a long time but the right season to visit is during peak winters and due to miss management of times from last few years I was missing it. Yes, you heard it right peak winter since Belum Caves becomes very hot as it’s a underground tunnel and apart from entrance there is no other way for air to get inside for which inside temperature increases due to heat entrapment.
One will find a big Buddha statue after entering the arena of Belum caves. There is a small restaurant and a children’s park present in the premises. Sufficient parking place is available both for two and four wheeler with a nominal parking charge. Entry fee for adult is INR 65 and children are INR 45, no additional charges for foreign nationality.

Belum caves are in kolimiguntla mandal of kurnool district in andhra pradesh of india. these caves were first discovered in 1884 by an english surveyor and later in 1982 and 1984 a german team explored it with the help of local people. Belum caves are 2nd largest naturally formed caves in India, present in kurnool dist of Andhra Pradesh . Thousands of years before a river named chitavati river flown this area , which dissolved some of the soft rock , leaving a big hallow space in the form of under ground caves .
BIGGEST CAVES IN INDIA || Belum caves
Belum caves are not too far from Gandikota and therefore a good place to visit after stopping at Gandikota. It is apparently the biggest caves in India. However if you go after the monsoon like I did, some parts of the caves might be closed because of water or mud.
