Benicia, California
This is Benicia, California. It is a waterside city in Solano County, California, United States. It served as the state capital for nearly thirteen months from 1853 to 1854. The population was 26,997 at the 2010 census. The city is located in the San Francisco Bay Area along the north bank of the Carquinez Strait. Benicia is just east of Vallejo and across the strait from Martinez. Elizabeth Patterson has served as Mayor of Benicia since 2007.
The town is divided into four areas: the East Side (east of First Street), the West Side (west of First Street), Southampton (the newer suburban neighborhoods north of Interstate 780), and the industrial park. Most of the town's older homes are on the east and west sides. Southampton contains primarily single-family housing developments and condominiums, most of which were built between 1970 and 2000. The East Side includes the Benicia Arsenal, a former United States Army armory, which was bought by the city and is now used for a variety of purposes, most notably as live-work spaces for artists. The Arsenal is home to several historic (ca. 1860) landmark buildings such as The Clock Tower, the Camel Barn, and the Jefferson Street Mansion. The industrial park lies to the northeast of the residential areas of the city, and includes the Valero oil refinery. The Benicia State Recreation Area is on the far west edge of the city.
The main retail area in Benicia is First Street, which attracts out-of-town antique and boutique shoppers and those seeking small-town, historic charm. In 1987 Benicia was selected to participate in the California Main Street Program.
Connections to Benicia include Interstate 680 from Martinez to the south and Cordelia Junction (Fairfield) to the north, and Interstate 780, Columbus Parkway, and other local roads from Vallejo to the west. Amtrak also runs past the city north towards Sacramento, but the nearest train station lies in Martinez across the Carquinez Strait. Railroad tracks carrying Amtrak and Union Pacific Railroad lines cross the strait alongside the Benicia–Martinez Bridge.

Vallejo, California
Vallejo is a city in Solano County, California, located in the North Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. The population was 115,942 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth most populous city in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the largest in Solano County. Vallejo sits on the northeastern shore of San Pablo Bay. The city is named after General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, a native Californio, leading proponent of California's statehood, and one of the first members of the California State Senate; the neighboring city of Benicia is named for his wife, Francisca Benicia Carillo de Vallejo.
Vallejo is home to the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom theme park, the now-defunct Mare Island Naval Shipyard, and the regional office for Region 5 of the United States Forest Service. The colleges and universities in Vallejo are California Maritime Academy, the Vallejo Center campus of Solano Community College, and Touro University California. Ferry service runs from a terminal on Mare Island Strait to San Francisco, through the BayLink division of SolTrans.
Vallejo has twice served as the capital of the state of California: once in 1852 and again in 1853, both periods being brief.[9] The State Capitol building burned to the ground in the 1880s and the Vallejo Fire Department requested aid from the Fire Department at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. As there were no bridges at that time, the Mare Island Fire Department had to be ferried across the Napa River, arriving to find only the foundation remaining. This was the first recorded mutual aid response in the state of California.

When I was in High School we had a Military Marching Band, but my youngest is in a Show Band, and I have seen some pretty flashy stuff at their competitions, but nothing like this.
Cool tricks and lots of talent, but still... the uniforms are pretty lame.

Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial, Revetment, rail car, California, October 2016
Visiting the Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial, near Concord, California. The memorial is dedicated to the victims of the Port Chicago Disaster of 1944, in which munitions stored onboard US Navy ships exploded and killed many sailors.
The memorial is on the site of an active military ocean terminal. To visit the site, you have to first register on the memorial's website and provide some personal information for the required background checks. Once scheduled, the visit can only proceed if there are no ongoing military operations at the military ocean terminal. If there are operations commencing after your registration that coincide with the dates of your visit, the visit will be cancelled.
It's not an easy or convenient place to visit. We succeeded on seeing this place on our third attempt.
There were a lot of old veterans visiting the place during our trip.

Schoenstein & Company, 1979
As reported by Jerry Jensen in this video from June 2, 1979, Schoenstein & Co. is the oldest and largest organ factory in the Western United States. The Schoenstein family has been building distinguished instruments for five generations. The firm started in the Black Forest of Germany in the mid-19th century with branches in Odessa, St. Petersburg, Berlin, and Stuttgart among others.
In 1868, Felix F. Schoenstein came to San Francisco representing his father and brothers. By 1877 he established his independent firm—the most consistently steadfast and successful company in the history of organ building on the Pacific coast. The popularity of American-Romantic tonal style and a reputation for integrity have widened Schoensteins horizons to the entire nation and Canada.
Due both to Schoensteins then-remote location and to its founder's inventiveness and curiosity, a policy of continuing study and training by constant exposure to the past and current work of other organ builders became a tradition.
First, each son of each generation has been sent to train with other firms. For example, Felix's son, Louis, worked for E.M. Skinner. Louis' son, Lawrence, and later his grandson Terrence, joined Æolian-Skinner. Second, Schoensteins service department, now the largest in the West, has brought them experience installing, tuning and repairing nearly every make of organ in America. Third, beginning after the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 1906, the builder has accomplished a monumental number of organ renovations. Schoensteins historic factory and archive is on the National Register of Historic Places and is San Francisco Landmark No. 99. It is one of the few purpose-built, unaltered pipe organ factories in the world. Today it houses the builders pipe and voicing facilities as well as records and artifacts of their first century of organ building and one of the largest archives of pipe organ books, periodicals and historical records in the West.
Schoensteins corporate office and main plant is a modern, state-of-the-art 30,000 square foot building in historic Benicia, 35 miles north east of San Francisco. Known as a gateway to the Napa Valley wine country, Benicia was a 19th century California capital and provides a pleasant atmosphere for the companys staff and visitors. They are especially proud of their equipment and plant layout, which promote the most accurate and efficient methods for the craft. They have assembled an array of wood and metal working machinery representing the very best names in the industry—Oliver, Whitney, Northfield, Buss, Mattison, Moak, Tannewitz, Root, Besly, Monarch and Bridgeport—among others. Schoensteins 42-foot tall erecting room with bridge crane is large enough to accommodate any size project with ease.

San Francisco Bay Area
The San Francisco Bay Area, commonly known as the Bay Area, is a populated region that surrounds the San Francisco and San Pablo estuaries in Northern California, United States. The region encompasses the major cities and metropolitan areas of San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose, along with smaller urban and rural areas. The Bay Area's nine counties are Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. Home to approximately 7.44 million people, the nine-county Bay Area contains many cities, towns, airports, and associated regional, state, and national parks, connected by a network of roads, highways, railroads, bridges, tunnels and commuter rail. The combined urban area of the region is the second-largest in California (after the Greater Los Angeles area), the fifth-largest in the United States, and the 56th-largest urban area in the world.
The United States Office of Management and Budget (OMB) does not use the nine-county definition of the San Francisco Bay Area. The OMB has designated a more extensive 12-county Combined Statistical Area (CSA) titled the San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland, CA Combined Statistical Area which also includes the three counties of San Joaquin, Santa Cruz, and San Benito that do not border San Francisco Bay, but are economically tied to the nine counties that do.
