Berdavan , is a village in the Tavush Province of Armenia. The village is located about 2 km north of Noyemberyan and near the village of Dovekh, Kohb and Zorakan. During the Armenian-Azerbaijan conflict, the village was intensively shelled by the village of Kemerli in the Kazakh district. During the Second World War, the village lost more than half of the male population,a monument in honor of the dead is on a hill near the village.In 2015, a new bombardment took the lives of two women , one of whom was 41 years old. History The village had different names,at first it was called Tkhadzor then Ghalacha and in 1978 was renamed Berdavan. Ghalacha village was moved to another place during 1893 till 1900.There were mosquitoes which were growing more and more,and their bite was very dangerous. People were afraid that they would spread malaria, that's why they decided to move to another place and settle there. But people had water problems as they didn't have drinking water. The head of the village suggested that they should bring water by clay tubes as it will be cheaper than iron tubes. Castle In the village there is the fortress Ghalinjakar.The village also has a khachkar of VI century. Berdavan Castle is on a hilltop near the border with Azerbaijan. Berdavan Castle is 664 metres above sea level. The entrance of the castle is opened in the western wall,while northern and southern walls are thick enclosures,and the eastern wall is twice higher than others.There was a secret underground way to the river. The latter has been used as a way to get water from the river, and if there was need they could easily leave the castle.There had been found pieces of cast,clay plates, metallic axe,but in the walls and in the surroundings were found stones with early sculptures. Church There is a church which was near from the village. The church was saved till 1940. But one day it was destroyed for building houses. Monument dedicated to the Great Patriotic War The village also has a monument dedicated to the Great Patriotic War. There were many veterans from the village who participated in the war. Water Mills In the village of Ghalacha there were also water mills,there were 8 water mills. They were named after their builder: Yergenanc, Qaranc, Ezdananc, Aprkanc, Ghushonc, Qarmanc, Tandlanc. The water mills were worked until they were electrified. School In the XIX century there was a private school but it was forbidden as it wasn't official.In those years many Armenian schools were closed including the school of Ghalacha. The school of Ghalacha was reopened in 1906. School pupils were getting more and more, and a new building was put into operation though it wasn't built totally. Honored teachers of the Armenian SSR are: Azatyan Vahan, Daghbashyan Samson, Yergenyan Dushinka, Petrosyan Hranush, Navasardyan Hovhannes. Famous people Many famous people come from our village. They are: well-known dictionary writer Harutyun Daghbashyan, the first hero teacher Samson Daghbashyan, famous pianist Svetlana Navasardyan, well-known singer Araks Davtyan, well-known doctor Smbat Daghbashyan, well-known musician Sergey Zurabyan, well-known journalist, editor, poet, writer Tanya Tandilyan, well-known piper Sandro Azatyan, well-known actress Narine Zurabyan and many other famous people.
