Into Svalbard and the first aborted dog-sledding trip on Spitsbergen
Dog sledding on Svalbard with Basecamp Spitsbergen, coach ride from the airport, dog camp and the first excursion.
Norway Road Trip 2016
Basic Itinerary: Preikestolen, Kjeragbolten, Bergen, Flam, Stegastein Viewpoint, Gloppen, Geiranger, Alesund.
Sognefjord Norway Travelvideo for SNP Travel
I was assigned together with cameraman Allart Blaauboer by the Dutch travel organization SNP to shoot a video on SNP's Sognefjord destination. The purpose is to give customers a good look and feel of the trip.
Our basecamp was Vatnahalsen Høyfjellshotell (links below) and from there we shot several activities in a couple of days. The hotel is a perfect place to start walks that are not to challenging but give a real deal on this part of Norway and it’s spectacular landscapes.
One the key tourist attractions in Norway is The famous Flåmsbane or Flåms Railway, the line between Myrdal in the mountains and Flåm city on the end of the Sognefjord (actually Aurlandsfjord). The line is open throughout the year and offers the most spectacular train trip I ever made.
We also had the opportunity to travel with the Vision of the Fjords, the world’s first and largest fully hybrid ferry. It is amazing to travel without heavy diesel engines and glide through the water. A must do!
Totally opposite of the Hybrid silence was the Fjordsafari with a ridiculously powerful RIB (Ridged Inflatable Boat). In the pouring rain, we spend two hours on the lookout for seals (and yes, we did see them!) and looking up to the high mountains of the UNESCO World Heritage Nærøyfjord. The way the mountains rise from the sea is impressive.
But Norway is not all about getting somewhere by the help of engines. The best activities are done by human power.
We spend a day riding the Rallervegen: a road constructed for the building of the Flåms end Bergen Railway but now also used as a cycle path. The path starts in Flåm city and go’s up into the mountains to Haugastøl Train Station. Or the other way around because going up is not for the fainthearted. The section between Flåm and Vatnahalsen has 21 hairpins on a very short distance and if you like a challenge… Beats the Alpes though ;-)
The last day traveled by train to Finse 1222. This mountainlodge is a perfect start for a hike up to the Hardangerjøkulen glacier. The walk takes about 6 hours up and down and if you are fit and have experience in the mountains it should not be a problem. But… weather is deceitful and can change rapidly. Bring descent gear and if you are not sure: hire a guide!
The assignment from SNP was wonderful and we worked very hard to shoot everything in a very short timeframe. When we arrived the very charming hotel owner Jannet Aksnes (together with her husband Rigmor) welcomed us with a big smile and the message: ‘You guys are lucky: in two days the big storm will come’. And it came!
The trip can be booked through SNP Travel: snp.nl/reis/noorwegen/sognefjord

Spitsbergen March 2012 trip - snowmobile excursion and dog sledding
Quick compilation of our 3 day trip to Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen.
Day 1 : Longyearbyen sightseeing with Wiggo from Maxi Taxi (3 hours) : great excursion !
Day 2 : snowmobile safari to Barentsburg (9 hours) : long drive but beautiful scenery
Day 3 : dog sledding to ice cave (7 hours) : snow too deep for the dogs, we had to push the sled up the mountain...Extremely tough but absolutely worth it!

THE HYPE IS REAL: Lofoten Islands, Norway
Lofoten Islands, Norway - The Lofoten islands off the northern coast of Norway, are home to some of the most beautiful and rugged stretches of landscape I’ve ever seen.
Our journey to Lofoten actually started in the city of Bodø, where we spent the day exploring the city and the saltstraumen maelstrom before catching the ferry from Bodo to Lofoten (Moskenes).
-
The saltstraumen is one of the best things to do in Bodo, as it is a small strait that connects the sea and a fjord with one of the strongest tidal currents in the world.
This wild whirlpool of boils and vortex’s happens when tides change and water funnels through the strait.
-
From our basecamp in Sorvagen, we have two days to explore the best things to do in Lofoten, on the southern islands, before needing to report to the capital city of Svolvaer for a dream event.
Our first stop is on the southern end of Moskenes Island at little fishing village called Å - Once a town that specialized in stockfish, it’s main income now is tourism, although, there isn’t many people around this time of year - which is actually one of the big reasons why we came in March.
-
Next up, its the oldest and perhaps most picturesque fishing village in the Lofoten Archipelago - Hamnøy
-
And just a few minutes back down the E10, is Reine. The 69-acre village is the administrative center of Moskenes Municipality, has a population of 314 people, and it’s major lifeline is very easy to see - and smell.
Cod or Skrei, is known as the Norwegian Miracle.
Skrei comes from one of the world’s largest and most sustainably managed cod stocks.
Although it doesn’t seem like it here, only 10% of over 400 million migrating cod are caught and branded skrei.
All over the Lufoten islands between February and May, you’ll see an endless supply of drying cod on these giant wooden racks.
They’re left out here for about three months, before being brought inside to mature for up to another 12 months.
Stockfish is the countries longest sustained export commodity, going all the way back to the viking days.
-
We also stopped at Anita's for her classic fish burger and finished the day at Ramberg beach (Rambergstranda).

After that we drive to #Briksdalsbreen Glacier because it is already quite late and bad weather we decide not to go further than the visitor center at Briksdalsbreen. Wilderness Canoe Trip in Lykkja Norway, September 2019. Camp site. Sleeping in tent with friends.
Autumn trip to Lykkja in Norway with friends in 2019. Spent night in tent in windy conditions and was fortunate to have great weather during the 2 day stay on a small island we discovered in the area.
Canoes can be rented at Hemsedal centrum at Høyt & Lavt. You pay and pick up the keys for the lock in Hemsedal, and the canoes are a short drive away.
Hope you enjoy this short video.
