The app that offers a new way to wine and dine
(28 Aug 2017) LEADIN
In Berlin, you can now take food tours through the city with the help of your smartphone.
Bitemojo is an app which takes users to hidden food gems in the German capital.
STORYLINE
Most capital cities offer food tours - but these pre-organised, structured trips aren't for everyone.
Some people don't like the large groups, prefer to explore at their own pace or simply don't like to listen to tour guides.
Enter Bitemojo, an Israeli made app that takes visitors and locals on guided food tours throughout the German capital.
There are currently three tours in Germany: a trendy tour of the Prenzlauer Berg district, a romantic tour though Charlottenberg and a multicultural tour through the Kreuzberg district.
Today Victor Alaluf, a 41-year-old Argentinian artist and travel blogger, is trying the app for the first time.
Accompanying him is Tamar Gablinger, the Germany manager for Bitemojo.
Alaluf has decided to take the multicultural tour though the Kreuzberg district.
It starts with a Polish restaurant where Alaluf orders traditional pierogi (dumplings) with a quick click on the app.
Once he has finished eating it is just a matter of getting up and leaving, the food has been pre-paid through the app.
The tour continues to a Turkish stand in a local food market where Alaluf gets to try a Mezze platter of olives, sun-dried tomato dips and Turkish bread.
The pace is totally up to Alaluf, he decides if he wants to eat quickly or slowly.
The app also sends a notice in advance to the restaurants so they are ready to serve the next bite, as the small portions are called, when the app users walk in.
It provides an experience, where you do a tour with special bites or tastings, of interesting places around the city, depending on what kind of route you are taking, says Gablinger.
And you are using the app and getting both information, fun, a bit of adventure, it is a bit like a scavenger hunt. And of course, you get to taste a bit of special local food or drink.
Each tour takes around three hours and they typically include five or six stops. The app itself is free but people pay in-app purchases of the tours that cost between 20 and 25 euros.
The first tour was launched in Berlin last year and there are now tours in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Rome and Barcelona too.
We have a lot of respect for guided tours with live guide. But it is a different type of product. We offer it for people who don't have enough time to take a guided tour. Or want to do it on a flexible time. Or want to do only half a tour and then do the tour later, or so on. All of that is enabled throughout the app, says Gablinger.
Next Alaluf's tour takes him to the wine bar Not Only Riesling that specialises in German wines.
After showing his smartphone to the owner, Frank Boehm, he gets a glass of Kreuzberg Blanc de Noir.
It is good for us that customers walk through the doors, says Boehm.
Maybe they also come back in the evening. Maybe they buy a bottle of wine. Maybe they buy something in the bar. Maybe they give us a review. It is a win-win situation for everyone.
Next on the tour is an Italian coffee shop where Alaluf gets an iced coffee.
So far he is happy with the service:
I use the app for the first time and I think it is really really fun. And easy to use. With one click you can find really good food in the city.
Berlin is especially famous for one German dish.
The city claims to be the birthplace of the Currywurst, or curry sausage, as it would be called in English.
The Currywurst is a post war invention. According to legend occupying soldiers from America brought ketchup and soldiers from the United Kingdom brought curry powder.

Oh-Berlin.com on Tour with Fat Tire Bike Tours
Our first guest blogger Sherry Ott was also a guest at Fat Tire Bike Tours during her stay in Berlin. Blending in with the locals by hopping on a bike, Sherry cycled around the capital, stopping off at many of the top sights along the way. Although the group was given a city map and full rein over where to go, the tour guide was invaluable for keeping them on track and sharing their knowledge of the city throughout the day.

Travel World War 2 Tour (Band of Brothers)
This video is the travel guide for a World War 2 tour across parts of Europe. I will give you our 7 Day travel itinerary from our World War 2 history tour including Normandy, Munich, Berlin, and Belgium. This travel list of World War 2 tour ideas is a guide for you to start from. I will tell you our hotels and a few places to eat after touring each day. This is a thorough guide, but I will put the links in the description box below. Since 2019 is the 75th anniversary of D Day in Normandy and since our teenager loves World War 2 history, we set up this trip. We traveled via trains and used Eurorail Passes so I will also explain that at the end of the video. We started our World War 2 tour in Munich since that is where Hitler’s reign began. #visitmunich #ww2tour #bandofbrotherstour #visitnormandy

Visiting a Difficult Past in Berlin
There are many places in Berlin that address its difficult past. Today, we visit 2 of them.
First, we tour a Stasi Prison. Before our trip, we knew very little about communism and the Stasi. As we understand history, the Soviets took control of East Berlin soon after WWII. After a few years, the East Germans took over. This group was called the Stasi and it doubled in size every 10 years. When communism fell (after roughly 40 years), 90,000 people were active in the Stasi organization.
The prison we saw held locals for an average of 127 days. Prisoners were on site to be interrogated. Some were accused of speaking against the government or communism. Others put up a protest flyer or expressed an interest in leaving.
Stasi would threaten inmates by describing threatening situations that might occur for their family members. 90% of those being interrogated would talk within 24 hours of arrival. After they provided information the Stasi were seeking, prisoners were shipped off to other prisons...including the Gulag.
In the beginning decades, the physical conditions were brutal. Very little food or water were provided and no heat. A small cell would hold 3-8 people and might include a spy. In the small, dark space, inmates had to stand in their cells when it wasn't sleep time. No leaning, no sitting down. At night, inmates needed to sleep in a certain position. They would be woken up every time they weren't in the position.
After a few decades, psychological methods were shown to be more productive. If an inmate tried to leave East Berlin, the only reading material they'd be given would be Western travel guides. They received a jumpsuit that would be several sizes too big or too small. A guard would look at the prisoners through the door's peephole every 2-3 minutes, 24 hours a day.
Prisoners’ glasses were taken away so they could not commit suicide. 2 of 900 suicide attempts were successful.
If a prisoner was placed in isolation, they had to be silent. They couldn't read or perform physical exercise.
After a particular inmate was released, he was told to tell no one of his experience. He confided in a spy in West Berlin and was sentenced to 8 years in a prison.
Inmates were stripped of their names. In the prison, they would be referred to as a 2- or 3-digit number which was their cell number.
The laws said a person accused of a crime could be represented by a lawyer. If an inmate asked for one the Stasi accused them of watching Western media which added to your list of crimes.
There were no attempts to escape.
We recommend this tour highly. The charge is 6 euro per person (cash only). In order to view the facility, you must be on a guided tour. Some of the tour guides are former prisoners.
Also, the prison has a large permanent exhibition that is free of charge. It's informative and we could have spent hours reading the information and exhibits.
After a quick lunch break, we were off to the former headquarters of the SS/Gestapo. It's called Topography of Terror and it’s free. This is a well-done self-guided audio tour starting with the beginning of Hitler and Nazism. A large section of the Berlin Wall stands outside the entrance.
As hard as it is to visit these sites, it's important that they exist. They are both very educational.
We were happy to end our day with a free classical concert at the Berlin Philharmonic.
We would appreciate a thumbs up if you like our message. If you'd like to hear more, please subscribe. We'd love comments or questions below! We reply to every one of them.
We retired early (in our 40s) after reducing our expenses by $6,500 a month. Now, our big splurges tend to be travel and health-related versus stuff. Please check out our other videos! Some are about our traveling adventures, others are about out new(er) life of FIRE (financially independent, retired early) and financial freedom.
