Berlin is the capital city and one of sixteen states of Germany. With a population of 3.4 million within its city limits, Berlin is the country's largest city. It is the second most populous city and the eighth most populous urban area in the European Union. Located in northeastern Germany, it is the center of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan area, comprising 5 million people from over 190 nations.
First documented in the thirteenth century, Berlin was successively the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia (1701-1918), the German Empire (1871-1918), the Weimar Republic (1919-1933) and the Third Reich (1933-1945). After World War II, the city was divided; East Berlin became the capital of East Germany while West Berlin became a Western exclave, surrounded by the Berlin Wall from 1961-1989. Following German reunification in 1990, the city regained its status as the capital of all Germany.
Berlin is a major center of culture, politics, media, and science in Europe. Its economy is primarily based on the service sector, encompassing a diverse range of creative industries, media corporations, environmental services, congress and convention venues. The city serves as a continental hub for air and rail transport, and is one of the most visited tourist destination in the EU. Other industries include traffic engineering, optoelectronics, information technology, vehicle manufacturing, biomedical engineering, and biotechnology.
The metropolis is home to world-renowned universities, research institutes, sporting events, orchestras, museums and personalities. Berlin's urban landscape and historical legacy has made it a popular setting for international film productions. The city is recognized for its festivals, diverse architecture, nightlife, contemporary arts and a high quality of living. Berlin has evolved into a global focal point for young individuals and artists attracted by a liberal lifestyle and modern zeitgeist.

Volkspark Friedrichshain Walking Tour
Hey Guys, Heres a walking tour of one of the best parks in Berlin. Enjoy this Walking Around Volkspark Friedrichshain.
Info on Folks Park.
Volkspark Friedrichshain is a large urban park on the border of the Berlin neighborhoods of Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg. The oldest public park in Berlin, at 52 hectares, it is also the fourth-largest, after Tempelhofer Park (300 hectares), Tiergarten (210 hectares), and Jungfernheide (146 hectares).
Märchenbrunnen (1913)
Mid 19th Century - 1945
The size, shape, and layout of the park have changed over the intervening years. In 1848, the Friedhof der Märzgefallenen (a cemetery commemorating those who died in the March revolution) was created. Another of the earliest changes was due to the construction of Berlin's first urban hospital, Krankenhaus im Friedrichshain, which was built in 1868 to 1874 in the southeast part of the park. The hospital, which was designed by Martin Gropius and Heino Schmieden, was originally directed by the notable Rudolf Virchow.
The Märchenbrunnen in Volkspark Friedrichshain, as it appears today.
An element of the park that has survived the destruction wrought during the Second World War is the Fairy Tale Fountain (Märchenbrunnen). Designed in 1913 by Berlin's city building director, Ludwig Hoffmann, the fountain contains 106 stone sculptures representing characters from traditional German fairy tales. The fountain was created for the children of Berlin, during a time in which rickets and typhoid were endemic, and took 12 years to complete. The Second World War had a dramatic impact upon the rest of the park. The Nazi military made use of the park, constructing flak towers in 1941, as well as bunkers, and as a result much of the park was destroyed by Allied bombing during the war.
At the end of the war Berlin was divided into four parts by the Allied Powers, and the Volkspark resided in the Soviet Sector. The reconstruction of the park was therefore undertaken by the German Democratic Republic (GDR). A plan was devised by Reinhold Linger, the GDR director of landscape and park architecture, to create two small artificial mountains in the park out of rubble from the bombed-out city. (Similar projects were undertaken throughout postwar Germany, and such peaks are called Schuttberge in German.) In 1946 the bunkers were destroyed, filled, and covered by over two million cubic meters of rubble from the ruins of destroyed buildings. The larger of the two hills became known as both Mont Klamott and Großer Bunkerberg, the tall bunker mountain, and is 78 meters tall. The smaller hill, Kleiner Bunkerberg, the small bunker mountain, has a height of 48 meters. With the passage of time and the growth of greenery, the hills now appear to be completely natural features.
The period from 1995 to 2004 saw a period of renovation and reconstruction, during which the Fairy Tale Fountain was cleaned of a great deal of vandalism that had taken place following German reunification. The swimming pools built in the GDR period have been replaced by a sports complex for beach volleyball, rock climbing, skateboarding, and cycling.

URBAN FLY FISHING BERLIN
Tobias “Tobsen” Cordes is an enthusiastic person through-and-through: most well known for playing the bass in German based band “Seeed” (that made it several times to #1 in various country’s pop-charts with a very own mix of Reggae and Dancehall music) Tobi is also running his small and passionate company “Ferox Featherworks” purely dedicated to Fly fishing.
As Tobi is a good friend of ours we listened attentively the moment he began telling us about the current increasing in the number of people who are not taking huge amounts of time to go fishing in faraway places - but rather prefer to spend their time peacefully fishing in the city. That number has increased to an extend that he recently even started to offer guided urban fly fishing tours or courses for beginners.
For some reason that story was reminiscent of a time when “Crossgolf” exploded in New York years ago, which was followed by magazines or events all over the globe, even up to today.
After we met Tobi we still couldn’t let the idea go, and we finally asked him to show us what this was all about. We planned to capture the essence of fly fishing day in the metropolis of Berlin, as it sounded kind of bizarre. In short: this is the first video clip we have released which isn’t actually about pure cycling, although we are happy that Tobi is riding his BEYOND bike from spot to spot when fishing in the city – not just in the countryside on the rivers surrounding the German capital.
We assume after you watch this video that you begin to notice these guys and girls in your own city casting their line in the rivers and lakes that so often flow through major cities somewhat ignored At least we have been in our hometown Cologne – so keep your eyes peeled, you might find it’s a bit of a spectacle.

Taking the train in Germany from Frankfurt to Berlin
When we boarded our train in Frankfurt bound for Berlin it was apparent we were no longer in Kansas (and by Kansas, I mean Thailand). Modern, clean and impeccably on time, we boarded the train at exactly 17 minutes after the hour as printed on our tickets.
Although our ticket was in Euros and not Baht, I instantly felt more relaxed. For new readers, you may not realize we derailed on our Thai train ride bound from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.

For just 10 Euros more total, we decided to put on our fancy pants and upgrade our seats from regular to first class. Sitting in our private compartment with a sliding glass door we had the entire six seats all to ourselves. Leaning back and reclining in a chair I alternated between sleeping, working on my computer and peering outside the window to enjoy the scenic German countryside.
Given the level of comfort we experienced, it was almost a little shocking when our four hour train ride ended abruptly in Berlin. It might sound crazy but I almost wanted to stay on board. This was fun.
Having just arrived in Germany from Thailand, we were still dealing with jet lag when we arrived at the train station in Frankfurt.
Our time in Asia has officially expired. We are here in Europe and we're starting our European adventures. Right now we're in the Frankfurt train station taking the train all the way to Berlin. We can't wait to get on board.
We are in a fancy little compartment here en route to Berlin. When we were booking our tickets we saw they had a special and it was only an additional ten Euros to travel in first class. We figured since it was a pretty long trip that we would splurge a little. Now we have this whole compartment to ourselves. Check it out.
Traveling by train really allowed us to see the contrast between countryside and urban centers. Some of the highlights included passing by cute little hillside towns, windmills and spotting urban graffiti.
What do you have over there? Well, I'm already enjoying my German baked goods. I found a pretzel sandwich with salami and cheese and vegetables. This is my little snack for the trip.
The last time we took a train ride was in Thailand and it was third class. We were sitting on hard metallic seats. What a difference this is. This seat I have here you can recline all the way back. It is super comfy.
I can't get over just how quiet this train ride is. I'm used to the rattling old Indian and Thai trains. The only other train system that I've taken that is on par with this was the KTX in Korea.
This has easily been one of the most comfortable train rides I've ever been on. I can't wait to do more train travel all around Europe:

Summer in Berlin with Busabout
Sometimes it is shocking how quickly time passes. It seems almost like yesterday that we were staying in our Air BNB apartment nearby Mauerpark for an entire month. Coming back again, this time with Busabout ( presented us with an interesting challenge. With barely 48 hours to spare we wanted to cover as many of our favorite spots we enjoyed while living here while exploring some different areas. The following is a summer travel guide for Berlin showcasing some of the top attractions, German street food and - of course - pulsating nightlife.

Summer in Berlin with Busabout Travel Video Transcript:
So right now we're visiting Berlin which is our forth and final stop of our Busabout tour. This is actually one of my favorite cities in Europe so today we're going to be running around town and showing you some of the highlights.
Berlin is a city that we are always happy to go back to and being here in the summertime was a lot of fun. We divided our time by visiting some of the main attractions by day and then enjoying some of the nightlife by night.
So here is a lesson in travel planning. One of the coolest things you can do in Berlin is come and climb the glass dome on top of the Reichstag building. In order to do so you have to make reservations online well in advance and unfortunately we procrastinated a little too long and all the slots were filled up so now we don't get to go up the dome which is so sad. So instead we're admiring it from a distance.
Outside of Turkey, I'd say Berlin is one of the best places to sample Turkish food! We couldn't resist going back to our favourite doner kebab stand in Alexanderplatz for a tasty lunch.
We're here outside of Brandenburg Gate, a pretty iconic landmark and next we're going to visit Tiergarten.
Today the gate is seen as a symbol of freedom since it's where people gathered to celebrate when the Berlin Wall came down.
Right now we're visiting Tiergarten one of our favorite green spaces in the city. And it used to be the former royal hunting grounds.
We also made time to swing by Museum Island. With a total of 5 museums, this is the place to be if you're an art lover.
Later on in the day we took the train to Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, which is the epicentre of Berlin's cool factor. This is a borough known for it's street art, flea markets, booming music scene, and overall it's a great place for nightlife.
So we are now standing in front of the East Side Gallery which used to be the wall that divided West Berlin from East Berlin. And we're just going to be walking the length of it and showing you some of the artwork.
The stretch left standing is 1.3 km in length and it displays over 100 paintings from artists all over the world. Some pieces are a little abstract but the majority have clear messages of hope and peace.
From there we continued on to Oberbaum Bridge which turns into a bit of a street party when the sun goes down. Several bands had set up along the length of the bridge and you could listen to everything from urban beats to indie rock. Who needs to pay admission at a club when you can dance on Berlin's streets for free?
And that's the cool thing about Berlin: when it comes to nightlife, it doesn't matter what night of the week it is, there's always something happening. After checking out some of the bands, we found a cool gravel lot turned pop-up bar and we enjoyed a few drinks as the sun set over the city.
What up? It's really cool, I got to see this band play on the street and I saw them a year ago in Berlin at Mauerpark. So it's really awesome. I just picked up their cd. They are called Rupert's Kitchen Orchestra.
Shots and snacks. Are you getting the shots or are you getting the snacks? I'm getting the shots.
Sam just found a makeshift bar on the side of the road because that is how it is done in Berlin. Sam's having Sambucca. Sambucca for Sam. I'm in licorice heaven right now. You're sipping on it? Sipping? It's a shot. Sipping on licorice heaven. I am savoring this. Okay.
And that's a wrap for Berlin and a farewell to the Busabout crew!
This is part of our Travel in Germany series. We're making a series of videos showcasing German culture, German foods & German cuisine.

TRAVEL VLOG // Berlin Adventure in Germany // TRAVEL GERMANY // SOLO TRAVEL // CREATE WANDER INSPIRE
Berlin is a mecca for artistic expression and creativity! There are so many great artistic experiences to have in Berlin. With such a deep and horrific history, it’s no wonder that the locals have wanted to break-free, celebrating their independence and the fall of the Berlin Wall with street art and murals representing peace, freedom and political mockery. Over the few decades the art scene has grown immensely from that initial rebellion and with the growing multicultural population.
Check out my Vlog from my creative adventure in Berlin, Creating Graffiti Art, Dead Chicken Alley, East Side Gallery, Historical Monuments, Cathedrals, Ample Man and more!
