Bernina Express. Chur to Tirano. April - The best time to travel.
This is a great way to travel across the Alps of Switzerland into Italy. This trip is described as one of the worlds great train rides and, as it turns out, with some justification! April 2016 was a good time to go as there was still lots of snow but the towns and valleys were carpeted in green.

Bernina Express, Chur to Tirano – Europe's best train ride
Routinely touted as 'Europe's best train ride', the Bernina Express from Chur in Switzerland to Tirano in Italy runs on the Alps' highest-altitude railway line. It's an absolutely amazing journey.
I've filmed the southbound route, which you can start in Zurich and end in Milan – a 9-hour trip in total, with the Bernina Express taking up the middle (144-km, 4hr 30min) section. Just change at Chur (1hr 15min from Zurich) and again at Tirano (2hr 45min from Milan).
There are panoramic carriages on the route (for which you pay a separate reservation fee), but I chose to sit in the non-reserved 'Allegra' carriages, which have exactly the same views (and were far less crowded!). The film was shot from entirely within the carriage (hence the odd reflection, now and again).

Day 04
Dia de cruzar a Suíça, dar um pulinho na Itália (Tirano) e voltar para Suíça, chegando em Lugano.
Fizemos a rota completa do Bernina Express. O trem sai de Chur as 8h32 da manhã e segue até Tirano, na Itália. A rota passa por Albula, um trecho considerado herança mundial pela UNESCO. Depois passa por Landwasserviadukt, construído em 1901 e considerado uma grande conquista arquitetural. A jornada continua passando por Valposchiavo, os Alpes do Sul, chegando a aproximadamente 2300 metros de altitude. A Jornada vai finalizando após a passagem pelo Brusio Circular Viaduct, com uma curva de 360 graus criada para compensar a diferença de altitude. Chegando na Itália, em Tirano, quando pegamos um ônibus, também do Bernina Express, que nos leva pelo norte da Itália, passando pelo lago Como, até chegar em Lugano, de volta na Suíça.
O passeio leva o dia todo. Chegamos em Tirano por volta da hora do almoço e tivemos a oportunidade de almoçar uma pizza maravilhosa.
E chegamos por volta de 17h em Lugano.
É um passeio incrível.
World's Most Beautiful Railway - The Bernina Express
Shortly after the construction of the Gotthard tunnel, Switzerland pulled off another pioneering achievement: the construction of the Thusis - St. Moritz railway line between 1899 and 1903. This opened the Upper Engadine to tourists. The Rhaetian Railway still passes over the same bridges and through the same loop tunnels. A still greater challenge was the subsequent construction of the Bernina Railway. No other railway in the world overcomes such steep gradients and winds through such steep curves without the help of a cogwheel.

Bernina Express, Part 1: Chur - Tiefencastel, September 2019
Departing from my hotel in Luzern in the early hours of the morning, I arrive at Chur station in time for the 0832 'Bernina Express' service, crossing the length of both the world famous Albula and Bernina lines, taking in some of the most spectacular scenery in Switzerland, and is often billed as one of the greatest railway journeys in the world.
Departing from Chur station, we begin by running along the Landquart - Thusis railway, opened in 1896 and forms part of the RhB core route, connecting the Landquart - Davos Platz railway and the Albula Railway. Travelling across the lowland section of the route, we begin to see the mountains towering up ahead of us, an ominous view even on a clear day! Arriving at Thusis station, we cross onto the Albula railway, and immediately start our climb, from 697 metres at Thusis, all the way to 1820 metres, in the Albula tunnel. From Thusis, the view changes dramatically, crossing the Hinterrhein and the A13 autobahn, and climbing to Solis crossing loop, and the 89 metre high Solis viaduct, the highest bridge on the Rhaetian Railway, before we arrive into Tiefencastel station, the conclusion of Part 1

Bernina Express: Tirano, Italy - St. Moritz, Switzerland
This is a great train ride with spectacular view all the way. When we got to the top of summit, just wild what we saw. Snow peaked mountains, ice covered summit lakes, skiers skying past the train. Really glad the weather was on our side. Sometimes, It could be a whole trip in the clouds with nothing to look at.

Bernina Express - Wonderful Tour aboard the Little Red Train in the Alps
The Little Red, or the Rätisch Bähnli, is the name given to the Rhaetian Railway. In 2008, the UNESCO awarded the Albula and the Bernina line the status of World Heritage Site. The Bernina Express, which connects Chur (Switzerland) and Tirano (Italy) is very popular with tourists.

The Albula line was constructed between 1898 and 1903. Between Thusis and Preda, the train is able to overcome a 1,200 meters high difference. With 55 bridges and 39 tunnels, the Albula Railway is one of the most impressive narrow gauge railways in the world.
Opened since 1910, the Bernina Railway is, with 2,253 meters, the highest railway crossing in Europe. Onboard, passengers can enjoy natural beauties like the Morteratsch glacier and its milky river, crystal clear waterfalls, the black lake, the Lago Bianco and more.
One of the architectural highlights of the Rhaetian Railway is the Landwasser Viaduct, which is 65 meters high, and the train runs directly from the viaduct into a tunnel in a sheer rock wall.
Interesting facts:
- The highest speed of the Bernina Railway is 60 km/h.
- The Bernina Express is able to negotiate inclines and declines of up to 7%, making the world's steepest railway without cogwheels.

The Bernina Express runs from Chur through the Swiss Alps to Tirano just south of the border between Switzerland and Italy.
The trains passes many bridges, tunnels and mountain villages. The train itself is spacious, clean and convenient. The windows are large and panoramic.
The Bernina Express stops at small villages like Filisur and Bergun where you find the Albula museum.
At the final station, Tirano, you can take the Bernina Bus to Lugano, one of the most beautiful train rides in the world.
