Big Bay State Park - Madeline Island, Wisconsin
Located in Lake Superior just off Wisconsin's North Coast, Madeline Island is the largest of the Apostle Island Archipelago. It is 14 miles long and 3 miles wide and is the only one of the islands with commercial development. Big Bay State Park is located 7 miles from ferry dock and features a sand beach, picnic area and camping.

Local Madeline Island residents playing croquet on the ice is an annual event. Croquet player and coach, Tim, states “This is our 7th year, or so, annual event.” All, including me, had a great time spending this beautiful afternoon on the ice with these very nice welcoming islanders.
These croquet players are well known for playing on summer nights on Madeline Island in a large grass lot located on Bell Street on the West side of Tom’s Burned Down Cafe.
The Ice Road is freedom for Madeline Island residents who can now go to the mainland on their own schedules at no cost. Non-islanders can see the stunning beauty Madeline Island offers in the winter if they are brave enough to take the 2-mile trek across the channel between Bayfield and “the island”.
