GOLD FEVER TRAIL - Big Bear Lake to Holcomb Valley - San Bernardino National Forest
GOLD FEVER TRAIL. Saturday February 22nd 2014. Big Bear Lake to Holcomb Valley - San Bernardino National Forest California. Forest Roads 2N09, 3N16, 3N05.
We reconnoitered the Gold Fever Trail for a future trip with friends. We find all 12 locations listed on the map. We took about 4-5 hours to complete the trip. We spent a little extra time hiking around, taking photos and videos, and exploring. San Bernardino National Forest. Big Bear Lake California. Holcomb Valley.
Go to the Big Bear Discovery Center on the North Shore of Big Bear Lake to pick up a trail guide/map of the Gold Fever Trail.
You can find a copy of the guide/map online at:
Or more information here:
Information from Big Bear News. KBHR933.com
It all started when William F. Holcomb left Indiana to seek his fortune in the
mining camps of Northern California. Discouraged by his poor luck there, he
drifted southward. While in Los Angeles, he was told a story about a small gold
discovery in the San Bernardino Mountains. So it was in 1859 that Bill Holcomb
came to these hills. And the rest is history.
Gold Fever Trail
Nuggets Of History In Holcomb Valley

Updated Information on METZGAR MINE from Youtube User Kyle Z.
George and Charles were in the second generation of miners, having come from Illinois in the 70's. They were born in the 40's and died in 1918 and 1921. Charles' second son was born in a little log cabin in 1887 in Saragossa Spring, a spring Charles discovered and named while digging through a mountain.
I recently learned about this doing ancestry and discovering that two of my great-great-great grandfather's cousin's mined here, and Metzger Mine is named for them. George A. Metzgar and Charles L. Metzgar. Their last name was spelled with an ar, and it was called Moonstone Mine. At some point there must have been some remembrance of the last name of its owner and it took the name Metzger Mine spelled incorrectly. There seems to never be any mention of them in descriptions of the mine/Holcomb Valley.

The California Republic was an unrecognized breakaway state that, for twenty-five days in 1846, militarily controlled the area to the north of the San Francisco Bay in the present-day state of California.[1]
In June 1846, a number of American immigrants in Alta California rebelled against the Mexican department's[notes 1][2] government. The immigrants had not been allowed to buy or rent land and had been threatened with expulsion from California because they had entered without official permission.[3][4] Mexican officials were concerned about a coming war with the United States coupled with the growing influx of Americans into California. The rebellion was soon overtaken by the beginning of the Mexican–American War.
The name California Republic appeared only on the flag the insurgents raised in Sonoma.[5] It indicated their aspiration of forming a republican government for California. The insurgents elected military officers but no civil structure was ever established.[6] The flag featured an image of a California grizzly bear and became known as the Bear Flag and the revolt as the Bear Flag Revolt.
Three weeks later, on July 5, 1846, the Republic's military of 100 to 200 men was subsumed into the California Battalion commanded by U.S. Army Brevet Captain John C. Frémont. The Bear Flag Revolt and whatever remained of the California Republic ceased to exist on July 9 when U.S. Navy Lieutenant Joseph Revere raised the United States flag in front of the Sonoma Barracks and sent a second flag to be raised at Sutter's Fort.[7]

Crews Continue To Battle Brush Fire Burning Near Big Bear Lake

Christopher Dorner Confirmed Dead killed in a Cabin Fire Body Pulled Out
2/12/13 - A body was removed tonight from the smouldering remains of the California mountain cabin where a man police believe is Christopher Dorner had barricaded himself, apparently ending a five-day manhunt for the ex-LAPD police officer accused of gunning down another cop. Heavily armed police surrounding the cabin high the San Bernardino Mountains near Big Bear, Calif., say they saw Dorner enter but never leave the building as it was consumed by flames, creating a billowing column of black smoke seen for miles. Police recovered a burnt body from the cabin, but were awaiting tests to officially confirm it belonged to Dorner, who for the past week was the most wanted man in America.
One sheriff's deputy was killed in a shootout with Dorner earlier today, believed to be his fourth and final victim after killing an LAPD officer and two other people this month, including the daughter of a former police captain, and promising to kill many more in an online manifesto.
Cops said they heard a single gunshot go off from inside the cabin just as they began to see smoke and fire. Later they heard the sound of more gunshots, the sound of ammunition being ignited by the heat of the blaze, law enforcement officials said.
Police did not enter the building, but exchanged fire with Dorner and shot tear gas into the building.
FULL COVERAGE: Christopher Dorner Manhunt
One of the largest dragnets in recent history, which led police to follow clues across the West and into Mexico, apparently ended just miles from where Dorner's trail went cold last week. Police got a break at 12:20 p.m. PT, when they received a 911 call that a suspect resembling Dorner had broken into a home in the Big Bear area, taken two hostages and stolen a car.
The two hostages, who were tied up by Dorner but later escaped, were evaluated by paramedics and were determined to be uninjured.
Officials say Dorner crashed the stolen vehicle and fled on foot to the cabin where he barricaded himself and exchanged fire with deputies from the San Bernardino Sheriff's Office and state Fish and Game officers.
Two deputies were wounded in the firefight and airlifted to a nearby hospital, where one died, police said. The second deputy was in surgery and was expected to survive, police said. Police sealed all the roads into the area, preventing cars from entering the area and searching all of those on the way out. Are schools were briefly placed on lockdown.
Believing that Dorner may be watching reports of the standoff, authorities asked media not to broadcast images of police surrounding the cabin, but sent him a message.
If he's watching this, the message ... is: Enough is enough. It's time to turn yourself in. It's time to stop the bloodshed. It's time to let this event and let this incident be over, said Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Andy Smith, told reporters at a press conference.
Dorner is accused of killing Riverside police officer Michael Crain, who was gunned down in an ambush last Thursday.
Dorner is also accused of killing Monica Quan and her fiance, who were found shot to death Feb. 3. Quan was the daughter of former LAPD Capt. Randal Quan, who was mentioned as a target of Dorner's fury in his so-called manifesto, which he posted on his Facebook page.
In the 6,000 word manifesto, Dorner outlined his anger at the Los Angeles Police Department for firing him, and made threats against individuals he believed were responsible for ending his career with the police force five years ago.
Dorner's grievance with police goes back five years, to when he was fired after filing what the LAPD determined to be a false report accusing other cops of brutality.
The LAPD assigned 50 protection details to guard officers and their families who were deemed possible targets.
Live Earthquake Stream 24/7 Ca Seismograph
Welcome, Explanation of abbreviations
can be found on the bottom.
Please read the description of this feed here below. This will greatly help you in the understanding of what you are looking at on this YouTube Live site.
Thank you for joining us at CaSeismograph. Let us start by giving you an introduction to what CaSeismograph is and why it was created.
CaSeismograph live feed is the only featured self-made physical live seismograph community drum internet feed in the world! We strive to create a live feed that will serve the people of Southern California to give everyone a chance to communicate and exchange information in regards to local earthquakes and possible future events.
CaSeismograph is for the young and old, and every type in between. We desire to keep CaSeismograph a child-friendly place and as scientific and accurate in all possible aspects. This is why the CaSeismograph chat is moderated and we expect the chat users to keep the rules set by the CaSeismograph Team. Please be courteous and follow the moderator's discipline and you and all others will no doubt have an enjoy full time.
Southern California is at the moment in a nice quiet spell but when that changes (and that can happen in a moment's notice as we all know), it's then our site will suddenly get very busy. Because of this, we are still looking for more moderators to make sure the chat be properly cared for.
Please let us know if you are interested in joining the CaSeismograph Team as a Chat Active Moderator (CAM) person? We will be glad to send you our HUEWS/CAM procedure team member letter and introduce you to the rest of the team.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Emails can be directed to: CaSeismograph@gmail.com
Also, this live feed was made due to the ABC Seismograph community who were lost after ABC dropped their live Quake Cam feed.
ABC7 used to show a live Los Angeles webcam. It was viewing an Earthquake Seismograph drum at the Los Angeles KABC-TV television station Newsroom. Although it had a several minute delay, it would show any earthquake activity in the Southern California area.
You are now watching a real Quake-Cam live stream. We encourage the ABC seismograph community who were lost after ABC took down their live stream to continue watching this stream. We don't have facilities like ABC7 but hopefully, through your support, we can get there. If you used to be an avid watcher of the old stream or you are a newcomer please share this site with your friends. Our aspiration is to one day serve the Southern California people with instant earthquake information through sensors all across the state and along the San Andreas Fault line.
Currently, we are putting together an entire professional functioning Seismograph Drum to get away from the small but inherently bothersome defects our current Seismograph has. Hopefully, by then we will be able to also introduce a live signal from Big Bear.
As you can imagine, this en-devour is quite an undertaking and thus we thank you for your support as we look forward to continuing to grow and inform people of any earthquake activity in the SOCAL area.
All Physical seismographs, earthquake graphics, images, background, content, video, voice content captured in this live feed are the property of CaSeismograph, and are NOT intended for redistribution, copying, or repeating unless otherwise approved in writing by the content creator, CaSeismograph on YouTube.

Richmond, California, a Bluesy heritage
In the post-WWII era the city was host to a vibrant music scene, punctuated by the Blues clubs and restaurants that dotted its working class communities.
Soul icon James Brown and Blues guitar legend B.B. King were among the towering talents that swung through Richmond to play gigs.
B.B. King
But, by the 1970s, joblessness, crime and de-industrialization had sapped energy from the city's nightlife.
It was only a matter of time before the economic slump dimmed the bright signs that once drew patrons to hotspots on Cutting Boulevard, MacDonald Avenue and in North Richmond.
Few of the structures remain, and those that do bear little resemblance to how they looked in those glory days.
To get a sense of the city's musical history, it may be best to talk with those who lived it.
You couldn't find any better entertainment, not just in Richmond, but in the entire Bay Area, said Joe Fisher, a local businessman who frequented the clubs in the 1960s.
Fisher reminisced while strolling down a now-dormant North Richmond block that was once studded with night spots. You could come here, to Minnie Lou's, and just feel very important, a part of something great.

On April 1, 2008, The Big Bear Valley Democratic Club hosted the Debate for the three Democratic Candidates running to decide who takes on Jerry Lewis in the General Election this November.

This Video is Pat Meagher's Introduction of himself at the beginning of the debate, during which he mentions some of his endorsements and his desire to represent the 41st.
Police gunfight in Big Bear manhunt
KCBS reports that two officers have been shot in a gun fight in the Big Bear area in the manhunt for Christopher Dorner.
439-San Jacinto Mtn, Idyllwild Historical Society Museum
The Idyllwild Area Historical Society features an exhibit chronicling the Idyllwild area’s history as a film, television and video location site. As part of the exhibit, old movie equipment is on display, loaned by Frazier Drake and Don Zeigler.
The Idyllwild Area Historical Society have mounted an impressive exhibit of the Hill’s history as a location for feature films, short films, videos and television shows.
The exhibit will run as a complement to the Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema and will continue indefinitely during regular museum days and hours after the festival closes.
During IIFC, the museum is open every day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. “What I wanted to do with the film festival was to coordinate Idyllwild’s history as a film location,” said Hart. “We wanted to let visitors and the town know that we have a varied history, and one that includes having movies made on the Hill for many years.”
As part of the exhibit, there is a book detailing the more than 100 movies written and/or filmed wholly or partially in the Idyllwild area beginning in 1914 when Cecil B. DeMille filmed cattle on the “open range” at the H.J. Ranch between Keen Camp and Garner Valley for his silent film, “The Squaw Man.”
Elvis is in the house, at least on display at the Idyllwild Area Historical Society Museum during the Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema this week. This is part of a historical display on movies filmed in Idyllwild.
A number of Westerns have been filmed at Garner Ranch in Garner Valley, including “Guns and Guitars” (1936), “Heading for the Range” (1936), “Springtime in the Rockies” (1937), “Brothers in the Saddle” (1949), “Riders of the Range” (1949) and “Storm Over Wyoming” (1950). Garner Ranch also stood in for exteriors of the hit TV show “Bonanza” starring Lorne Greene.
Idyllwild was used for the biker funeral scene from the 1966 film “The Wild Angels” and featured the exterior of Silver Pines Lodge, renamed for the film the “Hillbilly Lodge.”
Also noted in the exhibit are the many writers and film luminaries who have had homes here, including Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester, Raymond Chandler, Lucille Ball, Doris Day, Marjorie Main and Dinah Shore.

Magnitude 7.1 earthquake rocks Southern California | USA TODAY
A magnitude 7.1 earthquake rocked Southern California late Friday, just a day after the region was hit with a magnitude 6.4 quake.
The quake at 8:20 p.m. PDT was centered 11 miles from Ridgecrest, a Mojave Desert town 150 miles away from Los Angeles. The quake sent rocks crashing down parts of a state highway, ruptured gas lines and cut power to the town of Trona and parts of Ridgecrest, which saw building damage, fires and several injuries from the earlier quake.
