Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

Lake Pontchartrain, Lacombe, LA 11/18/2018
JD flies his Yuneec Typhoon H hexacopter over Lake Pontchartrain and the marshes in Lacombe, Louisiana, at the end of Lake Road, inspecting a partially sunken boat alonng the way. Then JD boards his own Camaro as a passenger so he can have his drone follow (or, more properly, lead) the car up Lake Road. His buddy Jim Tauzin does the driving. It would have been fun to go further, but operating a drone from a moving vehicle can only be done in a sparsely populated area, and further up the road, it was getting more densely populated with fishermen wetting their lines and nets. So JD got out of the car and subsequently landed the drone. 4K video edited with Pinnacle Studio 21. Music generated by Pinnacle SoundStage.
Marsh Maneuvers
Since 1990, each week in July four parishes send four 4-H'ers to Marsh Maneuvers camp on the coast of Louisiana to learn about the benefits of the coastal marsh areas and its marine ecosystem. During the four-day camp, the young people learn about coastal ecology and the biology of the coastal area. The camp highlights the coastal erosion problem, and the students discuss the solutions being proposed by state and federal agencies.

Levee protective marsh restoration in south Lafourche Parish, Louisiana
Here is a video fly-by I made recently of just completed marsh restoration project near Galliano, Louisiana, in south Lafourche Parish. The project was federal and state funded under the Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP).
Historically, a largely unbroken carpet of Spartina marsh existed at the toe of levees and acted as a speed bump, protecting the earthen mounds from being battered by unimpeded storm waves. Today, the marsh has degraded to the point where it no longer provides an adequate barrier and the levees are subject to storm waves for which they are not engineered or constructed.
The stakes in this area if a levee was crevassed in a storm due to marsh degradation? A catastrophic flood leaving thousands of residents of Lafourche Parish homeless, and potentially threatening the critical infrastructure in Parish which transports fully 1/4 of the nation's oil and gas.
