INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAII: What is the Future for Hawaii’s Largest Power Utility?
A multi-billion dollar deal merging Hawaiian Electric and its subsidiaries with Florida energy company NextEra Energy is on the table. NextEra Energy says it will provide a more affordable clean energy future for Hawaii, but opponents have concerns over how a merger might impact consumers and Hawaii’s renewable energy goals. The pending deal has also prompted some to examine the merits of other available options, such as utility cooperatives or county-run utilities.

Hi! We're just your average husband and wife flying around the world in business class for FREE. Without our miles and points, we never would have been able to afford this once-in-a-lifetime experience. We grew up on opposite sides of the United States in Texas and Ohio. Later in college, we met and got married in August of 2016. As poor newly weds and recent college grads, we moved to New York City to begin what we thought would be our long careers in finance. Only one year later, after accumulating over 2 million points through travel hacking, we booked round-the-world business class tickets to over 40 countries. Completely for free, using the personal travel hacks we had learned to save us $62,000. We quit our jobs, sold everything we owned, and began this once-in-a-lifetime adventure on August 27, 2018. Our hope is to entertain and enrich you every day through our daily videos, as well as share the personal travel hacks we're using to travel the world for free :) Let's be friends :) say hello sometime!

10 interesting facts about Kauai!
1. The population of the County of Kauai is approximately 67,000 and a predicted population of 85,000 by
the year 2025.
2. Kauai's weather is described as nearly perfect ranging from 75 to 85 with not much change season to
season or from day to night. Rain showers usually fall in the evening and early morning, mostly over
the mountain ranges. As they say on Kauai if you don't like the weather, just wait 10 minutes.
Kauai's lush northshore will receive approximately 4-5 times the annual rainfall as Kauai's southshore.
3. Ocean temperatures will range from 60 to 80 degrees.
4. Seventy percent of the island is inaccessible by foot.
5. Hawaii was admitted as the 50th state on August 20, 1059.
6. Hawaii, like Canada and the US Mainland, uses 110-120v AC (60 cycle) electrical current. This is helpful
for visitors coming from other places as they will need to bring adapters. We electric lights, ATM's, our
cell phones work, our currency is US dollars and we speak English & Hawaiian (with a few more thrown
in as well). The area code for all of Hawaii is 808.
7. Waimea Canyon is approximately one mile wide, 3600 feet deep and 10 miles in length.
8. The Kilauea Lighthouse was build in 1913 for navigation of commercial shipping between Hawaii and
the Orient and has the worlds largest clamshell lens. The beacon was decommission in 1976 and
replaced with an automated lighting.
9. Kauai is the home of the legendary Menehune. In ancient stories these were tiny people who
performed amazing feats of engineering and construction.
10. And perhaps the most interesting and unusual fact is Kauai's Building Code dictates that no building
shall be taller than a Coconut Palm--thus the 4 story limit on vertical construction.

Charlene on Green Takeover of Hawaiian Electric to Lower Electric Bills by 25%
Friday, January 7th in a face to face interview with Eco Effect TV, Richard Ha confirmed that Roald Marth, Ted Peck, himself and several others are raising upwards of $2.5billion for an eco-friendly buyout of Hawaiian Electric Industries, Inc. (HEI).
Richard sat down with Charlene Brown, producer of Eco Effect TV in Hawaii, to discuss how the new electric entity would create A Sustainable Hawaii Now. Richard is the new Chairman of Kū'oko'a Inc., Richard said that if the community got together and buys the old utility company electric rates would drop by 25 to 30 percent right away.
Kūʻokoʻa, according the company's website is the Hawaiian word for independence, liberty, or freedom. Richard is committed rid the State of foreign oil - and oil period. Hawaii imports 90% of its energy from as far away as Vietnam (22%), Saudi Arabia (18%), Indonesia (10%), Brunel (8%), Thailand (7%), Libya (7%), China (4%) Oman (4%), Russia 4%) Alaska (3%) and others.
Hawaiian Electric Company declined to participate in the panel discuss and provided no response to the news of a friendly buyout, or any offer on the table. Sources say the forced buyout would be as a result of failed initiatives to get Hawaii Electric to cut fossil fuel energy supply and develop more clean energy sources already available on the Hawaiian shores.
Geothermal energy is abundantly available in Hawaii but is untapped on most of the islands. The Big Island gets a significant percentage of clean energy from geothermal, but development has been stagnant for much of the past decade.
Currently, Hawaii pays $8.5billion per year to import crude oil. Transportation accounts for 62% and electricity accounts for 33%. Richard and the gang plans to take over Hawaii Electric Industry and keep that extra $8.5 billion at home, putting money back into the pockets of farmers and locals. Ha runs a 600 acre farm on the Big Island. Hamakua Springs already has plans to go off grid with geothermal energy supplied onsite the farms.
The Hawaiian Islands are warmed from live volcanic activity below the surface, creating quite a bit of steam that can be immediately converted to electricity - no coal, no oil. Richard says after buying out Hawaii Electric he'll begin weaning Hawaii off milking the oil barrel in about two years.
Kailua rental companies field complaints as bikes take up valuable space.
It's no secret Kailua has gotten crowded over the years as more tourists flock to the seaside community, many of them on bicycles.

PBS Hawaii - HIKI NŌ Episode 504 | Hosted by Nanakuli High & Intermediate School | Full Program
Original air date: October 24, 2013.
This episode of HIKI NŌ is being hosted by Nanakuli High and Intermediate School in West Oahu, with a special focus on their Nanakuli Performing Arts Company.
TOP STORIES: Students from Maui's H.P. Baldwin High School report on the electric vehicle revolution on the Valley Isle, with comments from the Maui Economic Development Bureau, current electric car owners, and manufacturers on why EVs make sense on an island like Maui. With Hawaii having the highest gas prices in the country and the state's push for sustainability, electric vehicles are growing as a viable alternative for Maui motorists. Students from Hilo High School on Hawaii Island tell the story of a girl who, while in middle school, was bullied by fellow students for an entire year. At her wit's end, she finally found solace by opening up to an adult on the school staff who had also been bullied as a child. By talking through her problems with this empathetic adult, the bullied girl was able to break the cycle and move on with her life.
ALSO FEATURED: The HIKI NŌ crew from Roosevelt High School on Oahu tells the story of a fellow student who, as the child of missionaries, grew up in far off lands and was witness to extreme poverty as a young child; students from Island School on Kauai follow a local rock band through their song-writing process; Lokelani Intermediate on Maui offers a video primer on shark safety; and students at Waipahu High School on Oahu tell the story of a female student who was once homeless and is now trying to make something of herself by taking college courses while still in high school.

STORYLINE
The Hawaiian island of Ohau, where US President-elect Barack Obama is on holiday, suffered a major power cut on Friday night, leaving 900,000 people in the dark.
By early Saturday morning, crews had managed to restore electrical service across many parts of Oahu after the island-wide power failure.
Residents had been urged to stay home after the lights went out during a thunderstorm on Friday evening and to conserve water.
The Hawaiian Electric Company said power had been restored to about 113,000 customers by 0600 local time on Saturday, mostly on the west side of the island.
Obama, his wife Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha, are staying in a 9 million US dollar single-storey oceanfront home, located over a mountain from downtown Honolulu, the Hawaiian capital, where the president-elect grew up.
The five-bedroom wood frame house sits on almost an acre of land fronting Kailua Beach, a favourite spot for windsurfers, kayakers and dogwalkers.
Obama and his family have tried to keep a low profile during their vacation, but that has not been possible for the man who becomes president on January 20.
During the day on Friday, Obama took his daughters and other children for icecream at Kokonuts Shave Ice and Snacks in Honolulu.
Malia and Sasha ate sorbet while their father ate a tuna sandwich from a nearby cafe.
A few dozen onlookers craned to take pictures.
