Big Lagoon County Park and Campground north of Trinidad California offers primitive RV and tent camping and one electric hookup RV sites adjacent to the namesake lagoon and Pacific Ocean. The very scenic location has campsites in a heavily wooded setting. First come first served stays are limited to 7 days. larger RVs can access a few of the sites but most are best suited to small RVs and tent camping.
Campers have immediate access to both the lagoon and the Pacific Ocean. Amazing scenery, quiet nights and a unique location combine to make this one of the more amazing places to camp in the country. A county run park the list of rules are long with special care required for pet owners.
Park roads are dirt and can be very dusty when dry. Sites have picnic tables and fire rings (firewood available from camp-host). A restroom with flush toilets and running water is available. Water spigots are available to fill containers.
Most of the sites have no or obstructed views of the water. There is one site at the very back, left hand side, that can accommodate a RV with views looking down on the lagoon.

Big Lagoon Trinidad Ca. With the family
big lagoon breach
The view from the northernmost point of Big Lagoon in Humboldt County, CA. This is where the ocean sometimes breaches the thin sand spit that separates it from the lagoon. This video was taken on a calm, clear day so we were able to paddle around the entire lagoon in just under three hours. According to our GPS it was nine miles around. We paddled back along the spit which ended up being 3.7 miles long. According to one of the park employees there's a guy that swims the length of the spit and back with his dog, over seven miles!

A tidal wave, but not a tsunami. This is the effect of an incoming tide on Big Lagoon in Humboldt County, California. During the few days each winter that the lagoon is open to the ocean at the north end, waves crash over as the tide rise and raise the level of the lagoon water temporarily. The water runs out between waves, creating a bizarre 2-minute tide cycle that persists as far as the extreme south end, 3.5 miles away. This video is close to the north end. My feet star,
