Brooklyn Bridge - New York City, New York
Check out Bas Rutten's Liver Shot on MMA Surge:
Mahalo travel expert Asha K. tells you what you need to know before going to visit the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City.
Overview
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Connecting the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn across the East River since May 24, 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. It spans 1,594 feet and it was the longest bridge of its kind in the world until 1903. The Brooklyn Bridge was originally called the New York and Brooklyn Bridge, as well as the East River Bridge; it wasn't formally named the Brooklyn Bridge until 1915. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, followed by its distinction as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1972.
Construction
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Brooklyn Bridge took 13 years to construct due to political squabbles and cost $18 million. German immigrant John Roebling was the reason the bridge was built after his ferry got stick in the ice of the East River one winter. The construction of the bridge consisted of a mesh of cables that anchor the structure to the ground. There are two large masonry towers with gothic arches on each side of the bridge to which the cables are also attached. The towers are each 276 feet in height.
Over 20 deaths occurred over the course of its construction. Plaques on each archway on either side of the bridge contain historical tidbits about the bridge for curious visitors to read.
Access and Tours
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Access to the bridge is available at the South Street Seaport if you're coming from Manhattan; coming from Brooklyn you can access the bridge from Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park. Tourists can take a mile-long stroll along the bridge as cars whiz by on your side. You can also take the Big Onion Walking Tour across the bridge and into Brooklyn Heights.
The Big Onion Walking Tour is $15 for adults and $12 for seniors over 63, active military and students. You'll cross the Brooklyn Bridge and be told the story of its construction; continuing on through the Heights, you'll see abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher's Plymouth Church, 19th Century architecture and sites associated with
Walt Whitman, Truman Capote and Arthur Miller, among other sites. The tour meets at the southeast corner of Broadway and Chambers Streets at City Hall Park. For more information, email info@bigonion.com or call (888) 606-WALK.

A Day in New York
(Please watch this film in HD and with the volume turned up, to get the full New Yorker-vibe). A day in New York with my girlfriend Synne and my mom Annette. Breakfast at Odessa's, shopping for shoes on Union Sq., strolling through The Village, by bus through Chinatown, the Staten Island ferry by night and a visit to the local supermarket. It was a nice day and hope you'll enjoy it too :)
New York at Night
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated U.S. state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of 8.55 million in 2015, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany. The earliest Europeans in New York were French colonists and Jesuit missionaries who arrived southward from settlements at Montreal for trade and proselytizing. New York had been inhabited by tribes of Algonquian and Iroquoian-speaking Native Americans for several hundred years by the time Dutch settlers moved into the region in the early 17th century. In 1609, the region was first claimed by Henry Hudson for the Dutch, who built Fort Nassau in 1614 at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk rivers, where the present-day capital of Albany later developed. The Dutch soon also settled New Amsterdam and parts of the Hudson Valley, establishing the colony of New Netherland, a multicultural community from its earliest days and a center of trade and immigration. The British annexed the colony from the Dutch in 1664. The borders of the British colony, the Province of New York, were similar to those of the present-day state.
Many landmarks in New York are well known to both international and domestic visitors, with New York State hosting four of the world's ten most-visited tourist attractions in 2013: Times Square, Central Park, Niagara Falls (shared with Ontario), and Grand Central Terminal. New York is home to the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of the United States and its ideals of freedom, democracy, and opportunity. In the 21st century, New York has emerged as a global node of creativity and entrepreneurship, social tolerance, and environmental sustainability. New York's higher education network comprises approximately 200 colleges and universities, including Columbia University, Cornell University, New York University, and Rockefeller University, which have been ranked among the top 35 in the world. New York's largest public university is the State University of New York at Buffalo, which was founded by U.S President and Vice President Millard Fillmore.

New York City Drive 4K - Chinatown - USA
Driving Downtown Neighborhoods - Chinatown - New York City New York USA - Episode 26.
Starting Point: . Neighborhood: .
Manhattan's Chinatown (曼哈顿华埠; 曼哈頓華埠) is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City. Chinatown is home to the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere. With an estimated population of 90,000 to 100,000 people, Manhattan's Chinatown is also one of the oldest Chinese ethnic enclaves. The Manhattan Chinatown is one of nine Chinatown neighborhoods in New York City, as well as one of twelve in the New York metropolitan area, which contains the largest ethnic Chinese population outside of Asia, comprising an estimated 819,527 uniracial individuals as of 2014.
Historically, Chinatown was primarily populated by Cantonese speakers. However, in the 1980s-90s, large numbers of Fuzhounese-speaking immigrants also arrived and formed a sub-neighborhood annexed to the eastern portion of Chinatown, which has become known as Little Fuzhou (小福州). As many Fuzhounese and Cantonese speakers now speak Mandarin—the official language in China and Taiwan—in addition to their native languages, this made it more important for Chinatown residents to learn and speak Mandarin. Although now overtaken in size by the rapidly growing Flushing Chinatown (法拉盛華埠), located in the nearby borough of Queens – also within New York City – the Manhattan Chinatown remains a dominant cultural force for the Chinese diaspora, as home to the Museum of Chinese in America and as the headquarters of numerous publications based both in the U.S. and China that are geared to overseas Chinese.
Economy
Chinese greengrocers and fishmongers are clustered around Mott Street, Mulberry Street, Canal Street, and all along East Broadway. The Chinese jewelers' district is on Canal Street between Mott and Bowery. Due to the high savings rate among Chinese, there are many Asian and American banks in the neighborhood. Canal Street, west of Broadway (especially on the North side), is filled with street vendors selling knock-off brands of perfumes, watches, and handbags. This section of Canal Street was previously the home of warehouse stores selling surplus/salvage electronics and hardware.
In addition, tourism and restaurants are major industries. The district boasts many historical and cultural attractions, and it is a destination for tour companies like Big Onion, NYC Chinatown Tours, and Lower East Side History Project. Tour stops often include landmarks like the Church of the Transfiguration and the Lin Zexu and Confucius statues. The enclave’s many restaurants also support the tourism industry.
Buildings
The housing stock of Chinatown is still mostly composed of cramped tenement buildings, some of which are over 100 years old. It is still common in such buildings to have bathrooms in the hallways, to be shared among multiple apartments.
Population & Culture
In 2000, most of Chinatown's residents came from Asia. That year, the number of residents was 84,840, and 66% of this people were Asian. Many population estimates are in the range of 90,000 to 100,000 residents.
Little Hong Kong
As the epicenter of the massive Fuzhou influx has shifted to Brooklyn in the 2000s, Manhattan's Chinatown's Cantonese population still remains viable and large and successfully continues to retain its stable Cantonese community identity, maintaining the communal gathering venue established decades ago in the western portion of Chinatown, to shop, work, and socialize.
Manhattan
Manhattan is the most densely populated borough of New York City, its economic and administrative center, and its historical birthplace.
Many districts and landmarks in Manhattan are well known, as New York City received a record 61 million tourists in 2016, and Manhattan hosts three of the world's 10 most-visited tourist attractions in 2013: Times Square, Central Park, and Grand Central Terminal. The borough hosts many prominent bridges, such as the Brooklyn Bridge; skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building; and parks, such as Central Park. Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere, and the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, part of the Stonewall National Monument, is considered the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement. The City of New York was founded at the southern tip of Manhattan, and the borough houses New York City Hall, the seat of the city's government. Numerous colleges and universities are located in Manhattan, including Columbia University, New York University, Weill Cornell Medical College, and Rockefeller University, which have been ranked among the top 40 in the world.

►Check out my NYC food guide:
Shake Shack is one of the most famous NYC fast food burger chains, and I didn’t want to leave NYC without trying it. We then went to church and then on to eat Ethiopian food!
00:35 Stumptown Coffee Roasters - I’m a big fan of coffee, and since it wasn’t too far away from where we were staying, we started off the day by going to Stumptown Coffee Roasters. I ordered an Americano which was wonderful, and a cold brew to go. Americano - $3.25
Cold brew - $4.50
1:38 Flatiron Building / Madison Square Park - While drinking my coffee, we were just enjoying New York City walking around leisurely. We had a great view of the famous Flatiron building, and then we continued on walking around Madison Square Park.
2:41 Shake Shack at Madison Square Park - I wasn’t actually planning to eat at Shake Shack today, but since we happen to be at Madison Square Park and since it was just a little while before they opened for the day, I decided it would be the perfect opportunity to try Shake Shack for the first time. I ordered the double Shack burger, which came with all the toppings. I’ll let you watch the full video for a full review of the burger and Shake Shack, but what stood out to me was the beef and the bun, which were about as excellent as fast food can get for me. Full Shake Shack review within the video. Double Shack Burger - $8.09, Chicken Shack - $6.29, Fries - $2.99
12:02 Hillsong Church NYC - After eating Shake Shack, since it was Sunday, we walked over to Hillsong Church NYC to attend the service. It was huge!
►Check out Sarah’s website:
12:58 Meske Ethiopian Restaurant - After church we headed to Meske Ethiopian Restaurant, which is one of Sarah’s favorite Ethiopian restaurants in NYC. It was so good to hang out with Sarah and to eat Ethiopian food — it had been way too long! We ordered the special tibs, doro wat, and a variety of vegetarian dishes. Total price - about $90
17:19 Luke's Lobster - Finally for dinner, since it was our final day in NYC, I didn’t want to leave without trying lobster roll. I wasn’t able to go to the exact location I had wanted to go, but I there was a Luke’s Lobster not too far from where I was staying. Lobster roll - $18.51 - It tasted food, but it was pretty expensive.

Thank you to my sister Pam and brother in law Derek for joining me on this food tour of San Diego, California! And during the video I said Oceanside once, but I meant *Ocean Beach. We were on a family vacation in California, but on one day, we decided to go on an ultimate San Diego California food tour. It was a lot of fun, and you’ll find all the information of all the places we ate below:
Breakfast at Northside Shack - We started off in the morning, and first headed to Northside Shack to try their highly rated açaí bowl. It’s a laid back kind of spot, and I ordered the $11 bowl which was the large size. The acai is frozen into a sorget, and then they layered it with granola, about 12 different kinds of fruits, and nuts and seeds. It was delicious and refreshing, great way to begin this food tour.
Hodad's - Probably one of the most legendary of all restaurants in San Diego, California is Hodad’s serving massive double bacon cheeseburgers, and classic American food. The original location is located in Ocean Beach, and it has so much character, plastered with graffiti and stickers. Derek and I each ordered the double bacon cheeseburger, which is a monster burger. It takes some strategy to eat, but it was well worth it. It’s a delicious burger, and I also really enjoyed the onion rings. Price - $14.25
Blue Water Seafood Market & Grill - Pam and Derek had been here before and they knew it was good, so it was a restaurant in San Diego that I was looking forward to trying. You stand in line, order at the counter, and then find a seat. They offer fresh fish of the day, everything very fresh. We started with some oysters and the main dish, which was the best dish of the meal for me was the blackened black seabass. Delicious food, one of the best restaurants I ate at in San Diego. Total price - $65.23
Communal Coffee - Next we stopped to have a quick avocado toast and coffee. It was my first avocado toast at a restaurant, and although it was a little dainty, it was pretty awesomely delicious, a real treat. Price - $26.02 for everything (I think 3 coffees and avocado)
Nine Seas Seafood - Home of the Crazy Tostada, this seafood food truck is a gem of Mexican seafood. We ordered a few ceviches, not knowing how enormous the crazy tostadas were. They were huge, and packed with just about “everything from the sea.” But not only were the crazy tostates huge and crazy, but they were delicious, especially loaded with salsa. Total price - $24.75 for everything
And that completes this San Diego food tour. It was an amazing day and the food was delicious!

BEST street food in New York - NYC street food
Consider this your essential NYC food guide. What is your favourite street food? New York Street food is great and New York food carts are world famous. There are lots of food trucks, New York street food carts and New York food markets. The variety and selection of street food in New York is amazing. One of the best ways to experience New York is through the food carts and street food. In this video we will take you on a tour of the best street food options in New York.
You can find information about all New York Food Truck Events on the following website: We were fortunate enough to catch one of the food truck festivals. These were some of the street foods that we tried at the New York Food truck festival.
-The Mac Truck makes a variety of mac and cheese. Mac and cheese has gained in popularity in recent years. The Mac Truck make a great variety of flavours.
-New York pizza is an essential food to try. Where can you get the best Pizza in New York. Not sure, but the Neapolitan Express food truck located on 232 East 111th Street, New York. There are many other locations in New York. Check out the website for more.
-Lobster is not exactly a typical street food, but we were happy to encounter Cousins Maine Lobster.
The typical New York food cart sells hot dogs, burgers and pretzels. We tried an expensive and very average $4 pretzel. I’d suggest to skip it and save your calories for something more delicious.
The Biryani House Cart in the New York Financial District is a highly acclaimed food cart. I love Indian food and this New York food cart is what makes New York Street food so exciting. The variety and authenticity.
The Chelsea Market is an amazing food market in a repurposed biscuit factory in the Chelsea and Meatpacking district in New York. This is one of the best food markets / best food hall that I have ever visited, with a huge variety of street food and locally produced food.
If you love thick milkshakes and delicious hot dogs, then the Shake Shack is the place for you. We visited the original Shake Shack in Madison Square Park. This is where you will find one of the best hot dogs in New York and one of the best milkshakes in New York

Хэллоуин - Halloween - New York - Хеловін Нью Йорк экскурсия tour Екскурсія
New York City’s 43rd Annual
Village Halloween Parade
Halloween or Hallowe'en (a contraction of All Hallows' Evening), also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve, is a celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day. It begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed.
It is widely believed that many Halloween traditions originated from ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain; that such festivals may have had pagan roots; and that Samhain itself was Christianized as Halloween by the early Church. Some believe, however, that Halloween began solely as a Christian holiday, separate from ancient festivals like Samhain.
Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related guessing), attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories and watching horror films. In many parts of the world, the Christian religious observances of All Hallows' Eve, including attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead, remain popular, although elsewhere it is a more commercial and secular celebration. Some Christians historically abstained from meat on All Hallows' Eve, a tradition reflected in the eating of certain vegetarian foods on this vigil day, including apples, potato pancakes, and soul cakes.
