A trip to Blue Hole, Big Pine Key
Part of the National Key Deer Refuge, Blue Hole is the only freshwater lake in the Florida Keys. It is really an old rock quarry and is now home to birds, alligators, key deer, iguanas and other creatures.
Big Pine & The Lower Keys — The Natural Keys
If you've had enough of an overcrowded and weary world, the islands of the Lower Keys are the place for you.
Here, you can snorkel or dive over the Looe Key coral reef, ride a bicycle through Key Deer country, or take a fishing adventure in the back country or troll the deep blue waters beyond the reef.
At the end of the day, you can trade stories with family and friends at one of this area's tiki bars, RV parks, campgrounds, quaint resorts or licensed vacation homes. The Earthy fragrance of mangrove forests and wetlands is never far away.
The Lower Keys begin where the Florida Keys island chain takes a graceful westerly turn toward the sunset, shortly after the famous Seven Mile Bridge. It is a quiet region of small resorts, down-home restaurants, single-family homes, untrammeled wildernesses and rich history.

Campground on Big Pine Key
In my opinion, by far the best private campground in the keys. Very nice staff, clean, larger sites than most. Boat ramp is a plus.
We stayed in the primitive camping section. Initially, we reserved a site on the water, but after struggling to set up the tent dealing with the high winds, we moved sites to a more sheltered area.
Exploring the Florida Keys - Marathon, Big Pine and Summerland Key
During our stay in the Florida Keys we visited the Dolphin Research Center on Marathon Key, found some famous Key Deer on Big Pine Key, hit up the dog park at the Ramrod swimming hole and kayaked the backcountry waters of Summerland Key.
