New 60-unit complex will increase housing options for seniors

Huntsville, AL – Stratus Development, LLC (Stratus Development) today broke ground on Lenox Park Apartments, a 60-unit apartment complex designed to meet the needs of Huntsville’s senior citizens. Lenox Park represents an $8.3 million investment in north Huntsville that will provide new, high-standard construction in a prime area of redevelopment.
Mayor Tommy Battle was on hand for the event and said of the project, “Our master planning research for the BIG Picture shows that Huntsville will need greater options for senior living, and that includes more affordable choices near public transportation. The Lenox Park development fits this need and will be an asset to our growing community.”
Stratus Development is building Lenox Park and selected a site at 2201 Old Blue Spring Road to better serve the needs of low and moderate income senior citizens of Huntsville. The complex will consist of one- and two-bedroom units with the latest energy-efficient appliances. Each unit will be equipped with its own emergency call system. Other amenities include a computer center, a picnic area with grills, a gazebo for outdoor gatherings, a playground to entertain visiting grandchildren, and a community room for social gatherings. Wi-fi service will be available as well a fitness room with treadmills and other equipment targeted to an aging population seeking to remain active. Lenox Park Apartments will also provide programs and activities tailored to the residents’ needs to improve their quality of life through social interactions, access to common amenities, and promotion of general health and wellness.
The Lenox Park Apartment community was made possible through an allocation of Low Income Housing Tax Credits from the Alabama Housing Finance Authority, a partnership with the City of Huntsville, and financing provided by Bank Independent. This financing partnership will allow rents to remain affordable while providing residents a safe and secure place to call home.

Jonathan Baksh, 19, jumped into Martin's Creek quarry in Pennsylvania in 2015, but he never made it back to land after suffering a cramp in the water. His mom was stunned when she found out her son was the second young man to die in quarry that year. Now, as the one year anniversary of her son's passing arrives next month, she's on a crusade to tell the world about the dangers of swimming in quarries.
Alabama Currently In Peak Season For Lightning Strikes
It's more important now than ever to be vigilant about lightning safety.
For the past two weeks WAAY 31 told you about several people struck by lightning in our area.
According to the Madison Fire Department, in 2017 Alabama ranked second in the United States behind Florida for the amount of people struck by lightning.
According to the National Weather Service 90% of people struck by lighting survive, but it can still be deadly.
On Friday night the woman struck by lightning in Hampton Cove last Thursday was still fighting for her life in critical condition in Huntsville Hospital.
To give you a sense of some lightning dangers, think about this:
If a storm is directly above Big Spring Park in downtown Huntsville the NWS said lightning can still strike someone 10 miles away, which would be all the way to Hampton Cove.
Donovan Massey from the Shoals is one of the 90% of people struck by lightning who survive.
He was changing a tire at the time.
I felt like somebody was hitting me in the chest and I realized I just got hit by lightnin,' said Massey.
