Big Sur: 8 Things to do on a Highway 1 Road Trip
Big Sur is one of the most amazing places in California and one of the most spectacular coastlines in the United States. I always love getting the chance to explore it and with summer right around the corner, I figured people would be planning their own Big Sur road trip and so I wanted to share a few of my favorite spots.

San Diego to Big Sur Road Trip | California Coast Highway 1
San Diego to Big Sur, ending in Monterey, California on Highway 1 including Sea World, Potato Chip Rock, Hearts Castle, Big Sur, Monterey and the Monterey Historic Races at Laguna Seca. I went in August of 2013, and drove the coast in a rented Fiat 500.

TOP TRAVEL TIPS:
*Potato Chip Rock was not an overly challenging hike, but well worth the effort. Expect to wait in line to take pictures though.
*Old Town in San Diego is worth a visit. It's not ranked very high on Trip Advisory (#42 on things to do in San Diego), but there is a lot to see and good Mexican food.
*Highway 1 offers a very scenic drive. Be sure to stop at Hearst Castle, McWay Falls, and at the lookout past Bixby Bridge (The picture most photographers take of Big Sur).
*The Monterey Bay area offers several things to do. Fisherman's Wharf is touristy, but Cannery Row is fun and Carmel is very charming.

Big Sur Road Trip 2019 California Highway 1
Big Sur is one of the most amazing places on the West Coast and absolutely one of the most spectacular coastlines in the United States. This is a top 10 bucket List adventure. Everywhere you look you always see a breathtaking amazing view. There are so many Vistas to stop along the way down Highway 1. Our favorites were McWay Falls, Pfeiffer Beach and Garrapata Beach/Calla Lily Valley. You could definatley spend a week or two just exploring and hiking.

Beautiful Trail Hiking: Big Sur State Park (Unreal Views!)
Weekend trip through Big Sur Andrew Molera and Limekiln State Park on 8/3/18 - 8/5/18. Crazy beautiful Highway 1 in California does not disappoint with views around every corner. Hiked Mcway falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park Cruikshank trail near Limekiln (one of the best unknown hikes ive ever done) and Bluff trail near Big Sur. A place I am hopeful to return to and camp at some point.

Explore Always | BIG SUR
Big Sur. It’s been called “one of the most beautiful coastlines anywhere in the world, an isolated stretch of road, mythic in reputation.” This picturesque stretch of California’s Central Coast attracts upwards of 4-million visitors per year and its name dates back to the Portolá expedition of 1769. During this time, Spanish explorers referred to the region as el país grande del sur, or “the big country of the south.” The name “Big Sur” was solidified in 1915 when English-speaking settlers chose it as the name for their post office.
Today, Big Sur is still a majestic place that offers countless camping and hiking opportunities; and points of interest like the Bixby Creek Bridge and McWay Falls provide an endless canvas for photographers. One of my favorite hiking trails is the Andrew Molera loop in Andrew Molera State Park. This is a moderate 8.8 mile hike with an elevation gain of 1,100 feet. The trail takes you up through the coastal bluffs and through some small redwood and oak groves. Winding back toward the coast, you’ll even get access to some amazing remote beaches.
Take time to drive California’s scenic Highway 1 from San Simeon to Monterey and explore the surrounding attractions; such as Hearst Castle – a unique private residence built for wealthy newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst over the course of 28 years. Today, Hearst Castle is an accredited museum, State Historical Monument and a designated National Historic Landmark operated by the California State Parks Department which offers a variety of daily tours of the property. If you’re a John Steinbeck fan, then you’ll definitely want to take a stroll down Cannery Row in Monterey and visit the National Steinbeck Center museum in neighboring Salinas, where Steinbeck grew up.

Pine Ridge Trail To Sykes Hot Springs Big Sur, CA
We backpacked Big Sur, CA from Friday afternoon to Monday and had a great time. Perfect weather and great food is some of what we enjoyed. This is the Pine Ridge trail that starts at the end of the parking lot. We hiked in the 1st night to Terrace Creek Camp. Day hiked to Barlow Flat camp and decided we liked that one better. We came back to Terrace Creek and packed up our things and went to Barlow. Next day was to hike to Sykes Hot Springs and take a soak. We were very lucky as there wasn't anyone there when we got there. Not usually the case as it's usually packed. Especially on a weekend. We hiked back in the late afternoon and then hiked out and drove home on Monday. It was such a nice trip. Non itinerary based and relaxing. I would highly recommend the Pine Ridge trail to anyone looking for a challenging trail with great rewards. You could squeeze this into a 1or night trip but to spread it out made this trip much more enjoyable.

ONE DAY IN BIG SUR: Our $1000 Mistake (PCH Road Trip)
Things took an unfortunate turn during our day trip from San Francisco down to Big Sur...
Big Sur and the Pacific Coast Highway (aka PCH or California Highway 1) feature some of the most beautiful rugged coastlines and bright blue water! It's really easy to make a day trip from San Francisco to see some of the incredible natural beauty along the coast.
We'll show you what went wrong on our day trip! But we'll also show you our favorite spots in Big Sur, Pfeiffer State Park, and along the California Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway).
