Discovering America on 2 Wheels - This video was shot in Big Thicket National Preserve on the Kirby Nature Trail in the Turkey Creek Unit. The Big Thicket National Preserve is located in Kountze Texas in Southeast Texas. The Kirby Nature Trail is a 5-mile Interpretive Loop with 27 interpretive stations that winds through a variety of terrain along growths of pine, oak, holly, magnolia and dozens of other varieties of trees and through terrain bordering sloughs, creeks (Village Creek) and through sloped terrain which is explained at one interpretive station. It's a well-maintained well-marked loop that will delight outdoor enthusiasts of any age or interest. Backcountry Camping In Big Thicket National Preserve, Tx, USA
Many subscribers have asked: What happened to your stuffed-bear camping partner? I miss seeing him on your camping trips. He was so funny. My answer was, Bear is in hibernation for the winter. At last, he started to wake-up up a couple days ago and asked to go camping in east Texas. He wanted to see the backcountry in east Texas, where Black Bears (Ursus americanus) still roam the forests.
To celebrate the first day of spring, we backcountry camped at Big Thicket National Preserve, Texas, USA. This is an amazing location with greater biodiversity than any other location in North America. It is the most threatened of the crown jewels in the National Park System. Major biological influences collide here: southeastern swamps, eastern forests, central plains and southwestern deserts.

Epitaph: Saving the Big Thicket National Preserve - Texas Parks and Wildlife (Official)
Geraldine Watson grew up in the forests of East Texas. As a plant ecologist and Ranger for the National Park Service, she played a major role in the creation of Big Thicket National Preserve. Now retired, she spends her energy restoring a remnant of the beautiful virgin forests of her childhood.

Kirby Nature Trail, Big Thicket, Texas
Here is a little history and beautiful views of the trail taken in Kountze, Texas. This is just one of the many areas of the Preserve and there’s a lot of unique stories and information on this place.
Government shutdown hits Big Thicket
KOUNTZE - By Justin Hinton, KFDM NewsBig Thicket National Preserve is one of 401 national parks closed from the government shutdown. We received word from Washington that the shutdown was taking place. We received the notice by 8 oclock, and we pretty much had everything shut off by noon, superintendent of the park Doug Neighbor said.He is one of 30 employees furloughed at the park. The other four not furloughed are considered essential and include law enforcement officers, a fire duty officer and a maintenance employee.More than 100,000 acres of the park are closed to visitors, including more than 47,000 acres of hunting ground.Last weekend was the opening day of hunting season and certainly those that didnt get their hunting permits before hunting season are trying to get theirs now, Neighbor said. Those who tried found locks on the gates and a posted notice explaining the reason for the closure. No backcountry camping permits, hunting, nor trapping permits will be issued until the preserve reopens.Neighbor says a group of 140 kids was expected to participate in an all-day environmental education program at the Visitor Center, but he's not sure at this point if they'll be able to attend. If the park remains closed, they won't.The visitors are impacted, but also the surrounding community in that 10% of our visitation provide about a million dollars to the surrounding communities, Neighbor said. The last government shutdown at the end of 1995 and beginning of 1996 forced Big Thicket National Preserve to close for three weeks.
