Epic NOLA Bike Ride Bourbon St to Esplanade Ave to City Park
Rode my bike from my place in the French Quarter down Bourbon St. to Esplanade Ave. and on to a trail in City Park that I didn't know existed. I saw rabbits, squirrels, birds and I witnessed a guy catch a fish. It was the best bike ride that I've been on in the 5+yrs that I've been here.

Newly homeless population rises in New Orleans
(26 Apr 2019) AFTER YEARS OF PROGRESS, THE NEWLY HOMELESS POPULATION IN NEW ORLEANS IS ON THE RISE.
INTENSE GENTRIFICATION FOLLOWING THE DEVASTATION OF HURRICANE KATRINA, HAS CAUSED RENT AND HOUSING TO SKYROCKET IN MANY NEIGHBORHOODS.
MORE PEOPLE ARE SEEKING SHELTER, SLEEPING IN CARS OR ABANDONED HOUSES.
SOUNDBITE (English) Royon Rene Burbank, homeless single mother living in an abandoned house:
The marketing down here is eight, to nine-hundred, to a thousand dollars for a one-bedroom house or a two-bedroom house. But, some unfortunate single parents – single moms, single dads – can't afford eight-hundred dollars.
DESPITE WORKING TWO JOBS, ROYON BURBANK STILL DOESN'T MAKE ENOUGH TO AFFORD HOUSING FOR HERSELF AND TODDLER SON.
SOUNDBITE (English) Royon Rene Burbank, homeless single mother living in an abandoned house:
I called child protection services on myself is because I didn't want myself to get in trouble or even lose my kid is because I didn't want to put him in harm's way. So, I had to call them, tell them, well hey, you know, I have a situation. I'm in this abandoned house. I called, and I, I took my chances, and I took my opportunities to get myself on my feet because, I have a beautiful son. I can't let him down.
ACCORDING TO HOUSINGNOLA, THE AGENCY THAT TRACKS NEW ORLEANS HOUSING TRENDS, RENT PRICES HAVE GONE UP BY 102 PERCENT AND HOUSING VALUES BY 109 PERCENT BETWEEN 2000 AND 2013 – WHILE THE CITY'S ANNUAL MEDIAN INCOME HAS REMAINED THE SAME, AT ABOUT $37,000.
SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Martha Kegel, Executive Director of Unity of Greater New Orleans:
We're used to making progress, so it's very distressing to us to see the tide turning in the wrong direction, seeing families sleeping in their cars, sleeping outside in parks.
THE LACK OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING TAKING A TOLL ON THE CITY'S MOST VULNERABLE – THE DISABLED, ELDERLY AND LOW-INCOME WAGE EARNERS, AFFECTING MANY CHILDREN.
Nats of single dad Norman Carter walking the street with his 3-yr-old son Elijah.
THIS FATHER AND SON HAVE BEEN LIVING ON THE STREET AND IN A FRIEND'S STORAGE ROOM ABOUT THE SIZE OF A LARGE CLOSET.
THEY BECAME HOMELESS AFTER NORMAN CARTER WAS UNABLE TO WORK FOLLOWING A BICYCLE ACCIDENT LAST SUMMER.
SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Norman Carter, Homeless in New Orleans:
The past seven months, without housing, it's unbelievable. I mean, to walk and ask people for money so you can eat or buy medicine for your kid, Pampers. It's a struggle. It's rough.
ADVOCATES SAY MORE FUNDS ARE NEEDED TO OFFSET THE HIGH RENT AND HOME PRICES. THE MAJORITY OF UNITY'S FUNDING COMES FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
FOR NOW, BURBANK'S SON IS STAYING WITH HIS GRANDFATHER WHILE UNITY WORKS TO GET HIM AND HIS MOM A PLACE SHE CAN AFFORD.
AND THE AGENCY IS HELPING CARTER GET HIS DISABILITY CLAIM IN ORDER AND GET ELIJAH IN A HEAD START PROGRAM …
SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Norman Carter, Homeless in New Orleans:
It's going to get better. We've come a long way. It's going to get better.
CARTER TRYING TO STAY OPTIMISTIC WHILE WAITING FOR A PLACE TO CALL HOME.

Inside New Orleans' all-female motorcycle club 'The Caramel Curves'
During the city's iconic celebration of Mardi Gras, the ladies of the Curves show Nightline how they're making big waves, from appearing in magazine and music videos to giving back to their city.
Mardi Gras 2018 Adventure on Bourbon St.
I made the 9 hour drive over to New Orleans to stay at the Four Points Sheridan located in the heart of the French Quarter. After joining my friends in the room we make more friends from the balcony with the megaphone. Lots of preparation goes into this huge celebration all for the sake of fun. We get a lot of beads from Mardi Gras Imports which has been our go to bead shop forever. This year Jim went to Whole Foods and got all natural mixers and snacks for the room. Check out the Uncut version on Vimeo.

They’re bold, chic, and they can shred the streets of New Orleans in a pair of stilettos. Meet the Caramel Curves, an all-female motorcycle club focused on empowering and uplifting women. After feeling removed from the culture of all-male bike clubs, co-founders Tru and Coco got together to start their own movement. Now, every time they ride, the Caramel Curves demand respect, standing as a role model for girls everywhere.

Mountain Biking New Orleans City Park
Within minutes of checking into our hotel which was pretty far away from the French Quarter, we had the unfortunate opportunity to learn what a party bus was. After moving our room from street-side to courtyard, I stopped looking for an earlier return flight home.
If you’ve already watched our Race of the Dead video, you already know that there’s really nowhere to mountain bike in New Orleans which is why we had to buy department store bikes for our trip. I complained A LOT out on the Bonnet Carre Spillway that night, but honestly- these bikes were totally perfect to get around on for the rest of the week in the city.
Riding through New Orleans came with some traffic challenges, but overall I felt safer and drivers were way more laid back. Which might be why I almost got T-boned a bunch of times that day. This guy here legit almost ran me over, but people there are so nice – he like pulled over and apologized as I rode by. LOL.
Finding the Darling bikeshop for my lock was pretty easy. And yes that is a donut pedal!
According to Single tracks there is a mountain biking trail over at the city park. So I set out to find it. I had A LOT of trouble doing so. So- in the spirt of virtual recon- let’s take a closer look at why.
The City Park itself is ENORMOUS. What locals consider a mountain biking trail is about a mile long. There are TWO trailheads where you can ride, and the Singletracks app leads you to what I would consider to be the wrong one. I actually explored the dotted line area first. This is where I found a bunch of kewl graphiti before I wound my way through the back side of the park and around the other side to where the trailhead was that I was hoping to ride.
I was almost back on the highway but I turned around to look more because I remembered a girl from the race the night before saying that city park trail was basically mulch. And I hadn’t seen mulch yet. I found the trail. That was A LOT of searching to find just one mile of trail out there.
The trail riding part of this video is over, but this town was way too interesting to not include a few more minutes of more footage riding around.
Café Du Monde had a line around the block pretty much 24/7. Yes- they are open 24 hours a day. This was the shortest I’d seen it so we finally got some Bienettes. What’s a bienette? It depends on where you get them. If you’re like Shannon and you like funnel cake – get them at Café Dumonde. If you’re like me and you prefer donuts – head over to Café Biennete.
We hope you enjoyed this video. Be sure to tune in next week when we head over to Mississippi to check out the Mt. Zion trail which was a treat to ride- even though we were still on shitty bikes.
Hit that subscribe button for us. And as always – thanks for watchin’. Catch you next time!

Bayou Camping | New Orleans, Louisiana | Bayou Segnette State Park
On this trip we wanted to escape the cold weather in Arkansas, so we drove south to New Orleans, Louisiana. We camped at Bayou Segnette State Park . This was an amazing experience. Nice facilities, and great campground. With a short 15 min drive to the French Quarter, this made for a great location to set up camp. One of the main desires was to eat at some amazing places. Below is a list of all the places we enjoyed.
-Saint Lawrence
-Cafe Du Monde
-Napoleon House
-Nola Brewing Tap Room
-SoBou Restaurant
-French Truck Coffee
-Slim Goodies Diner
Also on the trip we rented bikes and explored all of downtown New Orleans. We rented bikes from FreeWheelin' Bike Tours & Rental. The crew here was amazing, and had great bikes.
