Birthplace of Pepsi Cola Brad's Drink New Bern North Carolina
Caleb Davis Bradham was born in Chinquapin, North Carolina, on May 27, 1867. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, Bradham attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine in hopes of becoming a doctor. While attending school, he worked part-time as a pharmacy apprentice at a local drug store.
Unfortunately, a family crisis forced Bradham to drop his pursuit in medicine and return home to North Carolina. Upon returning, he taught school for a short period of time before opening a drug store on the corner of Middle and Pollock Streets in downtown New Bern. Bradham’s Drug Store would later become the very place Pepsi-Cola was invented. In 1893, “Brad’s Drink,” made from a mix of sugar, water, caramel, lemon oil, nutmeg, and other natural additives, became an overnight sensation. Despite its name and hearsay, pepsin was never an ingredient of Pepsi-Cola.
On August 28, 1898, Bradham renamed his drink “Pepsi-Cola.” He believed the drink was more than a refreshment but a “healthy” cola, aiding in digestion, getting its roots from the word dyspepsia, meaning indigestion.
In late 1902, the Pepsi-Cola Company was formed due to the rising popularity and demand for the Pepsi-Cola Syrup with none other than Caleb Bradham as the first president. The business began to grow, and on June 16, 1903, “Pepsi-Cola” became an official trademark. By 1904, the Pepsi-Cola Syrup sales reached almost 20,000 gallons. As demand for the drink continued to rise, Bradham decided it was time to offer Pepsi-Cola in bottles. By 1910 there were 240 franchises in 24 states and that year the Pepsi-Cola Company held their first Bottler Convention in New Bern.
Hard times fell on Bradham and the Pepsi-Cola franchise during WWI. This was due to the high price and severe rationing of sugar. This rationing prevented Pepsi-Cola from producing enough syrup to meet the demands of consumers. Though Bradham attempted multiple substitutes for sugar, like molasses, the outcome was always an inferior taste to the original. After the war ended sugar prices soared from 3 cents to 28 cents per pound. Bradham purchased a large quantity of the high-priced sugar, which would be a factor to the company’s downfall. Pepsi Cola officially was bankrupt as of May 31,1923, and its assets were sold to Craven Holding Corporation for $30,000.
After years of ups and downs, PepsiCo is now back on top. In 2013, Pepsi was ranked #1 on Core Brands’s list of Most Respected Companies. The company was also ranked #41 on the Fortune 500 list, in 2012.

Pepsi Collectibles- Antiques with Gary Stover
Pepsi-Cola plays second fiddle to Coke as a collectible, but we've found some interesting & valuable Pepsi collectibles at the Mall, and in this Sunday's show we'll share them with you. We start at the L & M Cafe, that place in the Mall where everyone eventually finds himself (or herself), and there's good reason for that! If you're going to spend several hours looking at the antiques (and you need that amount of time to see everything), then you'll want to stop in for a coffee or lunch or afternoon tea, won't you? Linda, who owns and runs the Cafe, takes us on a tour highlighting the many Pepsi collectibles that adorn her walls. Then, we search the booths and showcases in the Mall for collectible Pepsi memorabilia, and we do find some great items. For instance, there's a Mountain Dew tin sign from 1966 (yes, it's a Pepsi collectible), that just sold for $439.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. On November 21, 1789, North Carolina became the 12th state to join the Union—and as of May 20, 1861, it became the tenth state to secede from it.
2. For centuries, historians have been captivated by the lost English colony of Roanoke Island. In 1587, the colony was established by the English gentleman Sir Walter Raleigh, and was settled by a group of 117 men, women, and children. After three months, the colony’s governor, John White, made the trip back to England for supplies. Thanks to the country’s war with Spain, Britain was short on ships, and White’s return was delayed. When he came back to Roanoke Island three years later, he found that its inhabitants had mysteriously disappeared. The only trace he found of the colonists were the word “cro” etched into a tree, and “croatan” carved into a fence post.
3. North Carolina’s Outer Banks are beautiful for tourists, but deadly for sailors. The region is nicknamed “The Graveyard of the Atlantic” thanks to a series of sandbars and strong currents that have sent countless ships to a watery grave. According to records, more than 1000 vessels have sunk in the region since 1526.
4. The Wright Brothers tested various prototypes for a flying machine in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, because the remote location provided them with privacy, soft grounds, and steady winds. In 1903, the siblings finally achieved their dream of building a heavier-than-air flying machine with their Wright Flyer. Today, North Carolina license plates boast that their state was “First In Flight”—a claim that rankles Ohio residents, who argue that the Wright Brothers mostly lived and worked in their state.
5. In 1893, one of the world’s most famous soft drinks was born in New Bern, North Carolina. A drugstore clerk named Caleb Bradham invented Pepsi, which he originally called “Brad’s Drink.” The former doctor-in-training believed his syrupy concoction aided digestion, and re-named the drink “Pepsi-Cola ” in 1898 after the word “dyspepsia.”
6. North Carolina's state capital is Raleigh. With an estimated population of 439,896 people, it's smaller than Charlotte, North Carolina, which has more than 800,000 residents. However, data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau shows that both urban areas rank among America's fastest-growing cities.
7. During Prohibition, the citizens of Wilkes County made a name for their home as the “Moonshine Capital of the World” by producing illicit booze and selling it widely — and the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 didn’t stop them. To distribute their goods, distillers often had to outrun local and federal police. To outrun the law, they had to modify their vehicles…thus was born the sport of stock-car racing, and eventually NASCAR. The first track, the North Wilkesboro Speedway, held its inaugural race in 1947.

That year, Bradham sold 7,968 gallons of syrup. The next year, Pepsi was sold in six-ounce bottles, and sales increased to 19,848 gallons. The Cola Wars (Documentary)

Coke or Pepsi? This documentary covers the inventions of Cola, arguable American's favorite drink. Tracing the history of both Coke, Pepsi, and various other brands of cola that came about throughout history.
Coca, first invented by pharmacist John Pemberton in 1886, is a sweetened, carbonated soft drink, derived from the kola nut and coca leaves. Coke upon it's invention, quickly became the country's most popular carbonated beverage.
Although famously known as Coke, the original name for Pemberton's new product was French Wine Coca, Nerve Tonic. This was a non-alcoholic version of wine coca, which would have been an issue for Pemberton, considering various counties in his state of Georgia had just begun a series of prohibition laws. His non alcoholic version, was then named Coca-Cola.
Although considered today a beverage for any occasion, coke was originally designed for medicinal purposes. John Pemberton, the inventor, was a Civil War veteran addicted to morphine. His quest to create a better substitute for morphine, led him to create cola.
French Wine Coca, was first sold at Jacob's Pharmacy on May 8th, 1886, which was sold as a patent medicine for merely five cents. At the time, carbonated drinks were believed to be good for one's health. Pemberton claimed his product would cure a variety of issues, such as morphine addiction, indigestion, nerve disorders, headaches, and impotence. Dr. John Pemberton died on August 16, 1888.
Pepsi, originally known as Brad's Drink, was created in 1893 by drugstore owner Caleb Bradham. Bradham looked to create a drink that would both cure indigestion, and boost energy. It was renamed Pepsi Cola, in 1898. Much like coke, Pepsi touted itself to be both delicious and healthful.
