BPC Episode 63 - New Holland Brewing
Whenever one mentions Dragon’s Milk around the Pigs, we tend to get a little excited. So when we had the chance to sit with Holly Joy Cole of New Holland Brewery, we were overjoyed. Holly joined the boys at the round table at Alley’s Alehouse to talk, not just about the wonder that is Dragon’s Milk, but about all the fantastic brews and spirits that can be found at the brewery or on the shelf at your favorite party store.
She also brought with her a few New Holland brews to sample (Monkey King farmhouse and Full Circle kolsch) while she gave us some of the backstory of New Holland as well as some of the upcoming events such as the Porter’s Perfect Pint which is happening next Saturday, Oct 1st, and the Filthy Pumpkin which going down at Chathum Tap in Fishers on Oct 25th. Located near the shores of Lake Michigan in the small but beautiful Dutch city of Holland, Michigan, New Holland Brewing has been a staple in the beer scene since 1996, and they have just opened their new distillery and brewpub in Grand Rapids, Michigan, New Holland Brewing The Knickerbocker. Also joining us this week was our good buddy, Benjamin Cannon of Spark Joy Music, who’s episode for Friday Night Confessions releases next Friday, September 30th. There was also the late, special guest appearance, straight out of the Pig Pen, of Mr. Riley Wunnenberg. It was a special night to celebrate the birthday of our own, Hunter Blind Pig, with some great beer and laughs. We can’t wait to do more with Holly and New Holland Brewing in the future. We’re not certain yet, but we may have coined their new tag line for 2017. You’ll have to listen and find out what it is. Many shout outs in this episode, including Black Acre Brewing Co, Central State Brewing, Jeremy Nicely and Evil Czech Brewery and Public House, Urban Chestnut, and the Fiddler’s Hearth. (The groovy track behind Nico’s Open Stage commercial you hear on each weekly episode is from that cool Indy band, Whoa!Tiger, who will be playing tomorrow night, September 24th, only at Alley’s Alehouse.)

Albion Indiana
The Town of Albion, founded in 1836, is a charming community of 2, 556 residents. From its historic Downtown Square to the over 80 acres of award-winning parkland, Albion prides itself on being a small town with big character. Those who live, work, and visit enjoy several locally owned eateries, a brewery, and an ice cream shop.
Furthermore, Albion is home to the Old Jailhouse Museum where visitors can experience their local history, the Black Pine Animal Sanctuary (awarded a Certificate of Excellence on Trip Advisor) where exotic animals roam, and a brand new Splash Pad installed at Hidden Diamonds park, a cool reprieve from the sun on a summer day. Down the road just a few miles from town? Chain O’ Lakes State Park - which sees over 300,000 visitors per year and is the focal point from which the Town’s slogan was born.
Most every day-to-day task can be accomplished here. A run to the bank. A fill-up on gas. A quick trip to the hardware store for a box of nails. But for the few amenities only found in bigger municipalities, Albion finds itself in the middle of it all, as the geographic center of
Northeast Indiana. It is only a short trip to Ft. Wayne or Warsaw, where residents can shop, but many would agree that Albion’s “room to breathe” is its biggest appeal.
In the summers, Albion hosts the Chain O’ Lakes Festival, and in the fall they host an event called “Scare on the Square” to celebrate Halloween. These events, and dozens of others, draw the citizens of Albion together to celebrate, eat delicious food, and enjoy the company of others in the Downtown Square - surrounded by the businesses and history that have made Albion what it is today, at 182 years old.
Albion is the perfect place to live, work, and play, offering employment opportunities, a renowned local school system (Home of the 2018 Class 2A Women’s State Basketball Champions), and a community of hardworking individuals.
We’re more than the Gateway to Chain O’ Lakes, we’re the Gateway to Opportunity.
Lesson 9 Cutters
Lesson 9 of the Summer Semester is about Cutters Brewery. Locally brewed in Indiana, their five year round brews are Empire Imperial Stout, Floyd's Folly Scottish Ale, Half Court IPA, Lost River Blonde Ale and Monom Wheat.
Empire Imperial Stout - One of our nation's most regal structures, the Empire State Building features 200,000 cubic feet of Indiana limestone and granite. For this historic construction project the Empire Quarry in Lawrence County was specially chosen to be the sole source of the stately stone. In tribute we present our bold Empire Imperial Stout, black as night and pouring with a thick tan head. It starts with an espresso-like, malt flavor and finishes smooth and slightly sweet from the addition of molasses in the brewing processs. Like standing at the top of a 102-story skyscraper, Empire is rewarding but not for the faint of heart.
Floyd's Folly Scottish Ale - The life of an old-time cutter? Well, it wasn't always long but it could be just long enough to benefit generations. Floyd McCoy is a fine example. He cut around central Indiana until injured by a limestone slab in 1959. And while he finally succumbed to his wounds, it wasn't before starting a fine legacy of his own, by grandfathering one of the founders of Cutters Brewing Co. Our salute is a Scotch Ale worthy of his Name. Floyd's Folly pours a nice amber color with a light tan head and boasts of full-roasted malt and caramel flavors. One taste and you'll be thanking of Floyd, too.
Half Court IPA - So rabid are we about roundball that in 1925 Mr. Naismith himself declared Indiana the center of the sport. Needing only five starters, the game was tailor made for the towns that dot Indiana and just one or two great players could take any school to the state finals -- and immortality. Half Court is out celebration of basketball fever and the sweat it takes for success. A noble example of an India Pale Ale, this beer pours with a thick white head and hits you directly with the scent of hops and citrus. Be forewarned, we're just as hysterical about hops as we are hoops.
Lost River Blonde Ale - Southern Indiana holds more than a few secrets and natural wonders. Among them is the Lost River with 23 of its 85 miles underground. Rising in Washington County, the river flows for miles until the stream turns dry as it vanishes into the limestone to form subterranean caverns, many of which remain unexplored. Another natural wonder is our version of the Lost River, a crisp, refreshing summer ale with spicy hop notes and a thick white foamy head. One taste and it's no mystery how Lost River can make any thirst disappear on any occasion.
Monon Wheat - Years ago whilst pierced the air and the ground literally shook from the power steam. The Monon Railroad helped propel Indiana's economy from 1897 -- 1956 and earned its name from the convergence of its four main routes in Monon, Indiana. From Monon, the mainlines reached Chicago, Louisville, Indianapolis, Michigan City, and most towns in between. Our refreshing Belgian style Wit beer is powered by the memories of the Monon and brewed with lemon peel, orange peel, and coriander for a crisp, tart finish. For an extremly refreshing and drinkable beer, hard working cutters say All aboard! the Monon.

Local beer crafters share talents during Beer Week
more new mexicans are drinking local. last year, craft beer sales were up 16-percent in new mexico. and as local brewers start abq beer week .... we found out the local beer business booming. and that's having a positive effect on new mexico's economy. erica zucco has the story. local brewers say new mexicans have just caught on to the appeal of their craft: The beer is created 100 feet from us and it's served 50 feet from us WHEN HAMILTON started brewing a decade ago, he couldn't imagine abq beer week EVEN HAPPENING. the education of craft beer wasn't there flashback 12 years - only 1 brewpub featured in this year's beer week even existed. in 2008, up that to three... a few years later, seven. but that just counts the brewers that actually serve beer -- spots like il vicino, kelly's, tractor and nexxus -- places packed at night with thirsty spenders. marble brewery opened right as craft fever hit. We got a lot of traction pretty quickly, it allowed us to ramp up and really grow the business over the last five years you can see and hear just how busy an average day is at Marble Brewery, and that's because now, they aren't just brewing for New Mexico. marble - like several others in the area - started distributing out of state in the past year... bringing cash into ours. meanwhile, as the number of breweries grows -- so has tourism. There's a lot of beer travelers out there and they will go to cities with good breweries A chance to show off our hops... and bring in the bucks. in albuquerque, erica zucco, kob eyewitness news 4. the future of microbreweries in new mexico looks bright... in part because of something lawmakers did in the last session. they approved a bill that raises the limit on barrels a brewer can produce a year to be considered a microbrewery. it's been raised from 5 thousand barrels to 15 thousand barrels. that helps many of the microbreweries we mentioned by reducing how much they'd have to pay

10 Affordable Cities To Live In the Inland Empire

Ready To Buy? Call me at 909-920-3500 or visit
I'm sharing with you my top list, my favorite spots, the best, most affordable cities to purchase in the Inland Empire. I have picked these cities because they are not only affordable, but they are quality and they have something really great to offer.
My number one place is a place that I used to live in and spend a lot of time in, Rancho Cucamonga. It's very close to the mountains, it's a newer city and it's ran very well, has great school districts, 45 minutes out from the beach or LA, and has really great public transportation.
Number two, Upland! I love Upland. My office is in Upland, I'm an Upland girl, so much fun stuff to do in Upland. Much like Rancho Cucamonga, proximity to so many services, transportation, that it's a really wonderful city to live in. It just doesn't have as much inventory as Rancho Cucamonga, but nonetheless, I freaking love me some Upland real estate.
North Ontario is beautiful. The inventory is exquisite, craftsman style homes. They have a historic district there, so these homes have to maintain the integral charm of whatever year they were built in. There's 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s houses, but primarily, it's 40s, 50s, and 60s houses, a lot of craftsman stuff, a lot of Spanish stuff. And mind you, all of these cities qualify for buyer financing and first-time buyer financing, making them extremely, even more so affordable.
Riverside, I love the downtown area of Riverside. Lots of charm, lots of really great restaurants, night life, art, theater. I also like Jurupa Valley in Riverside for its affordability, and easy access to freeways, and just, it's a great all-around town.
So, Corona isn't largely known as affordable, unless you live in OC and you're looking to purchase something. Most people that work in Orange County or want to buy in Orange County find themselves in Corona. Well, there's a little-known affordable spot called Horse thief Canyon. They just lost their Mello-Roos. Mello-Roos is usually only good for about 15 years. It's put on a property for infrastructure development and usually is a, has a shelf life of about 15 years. So, the taxes are great there, great little spot, bigger homes, newer homes.
Temecula Valley is so freaking magnificent and wonderful. And they are really putting themselves on the map these days for their wonderful wines. You have to check out Menifee. It's super affordable, has a wide variety of real estate, from your, you know, cookie-cutter track homes to affordable homes on acreage. You would not believe the acreage and the type of home that you can get for the price in the Menifee area, so you definitely need to check that out.
Next is San Bernardino. It is a bastion of affordability and has been ever since I was a young girl. The areas that are my favorites, that I really connect with, mostly is that area out by the country club, off of Waterman. The country club area is spectacular. It's a golf course, it's a private club, but the homes around it are not private, you do not have to be a member, and there's some really sweet real estate there. There's some crazy, great, mid century modern stuff that will knock your socks off if you're into that.
But primarily, you're gonna find 50s craftsman style home or a Spanish type of home that was built in the 40's to 60's.
I love Hesperia, I love it for the proximity to the freeway. Most people purchasing in the High Desert are commuting to San Bernardino, Riverside, Pomona, some even, Orange County in LA. So, if you could get to your spot as quickly as possible, High Desert's huge. Hesperia has varied inventory, all the way from large lots and older homes, ranch style homes, to the newer stucco, five-bedroom, big, huge, bang for your buck. And if somebody wants a five-bedroom home, 3,500 square feet, and they have a certain payment requirement in mind, they're oftentimes gonna be purchasing in Hesperia in the High Desert.
Next on my list is Pinon Hills, country charm, large lots, very animal-friendly. I also love Oak Hills. Oak Hills has some amazing property, amazing, 3,000 square foot ranch style homes on two-and-a-half acres. Oak Hills, you have to have minimum lot size of two-and-a-half acres.
So, all the properties there are pretty special, custom homes. So, if you're looking to buy, sell, or invest in the Inland Empire, pick up the phone and give me a call at 909-920-3500. And for more info, you can also find me on the web at thesocalloanpro.com Have a wonderful day.

Vintage Television Commercials - 1980s - Part 1
This is a compilation of mostly national television ads that aired during the early and mid-1980s. They originate from off-the-air VHS recordings.
Some of these spots are masterpieces. They provide a glimpse into an era of TV broadcasting when the commercial breaks often were as interesting and well produced as the programs they interrupted.

Trailer park millionaires
Some of the richest people in the US, including billionaires Warren Buffett and Sam Zell, have made millions from trailer parks at the expense of the country's poorest people. Seeing their success, ordinary people from across the country are now trying to follow in their footsteps and become trailer park millionaires. The Guardian went to Orlando to learn the tricks of the trade from Frank Rolfe, the self-appointed dean of Mobile Home University, as he led would-be investors around a trailer park for sex offenders.

Jason made a point in the fall and winter to look for new crappie fishing spots with his electronics. He started in some productive arms of the lake and idled along break lines looking for brush piles with fish.
These creek channel edges are often where fishermen like to drop their brush piles. So Jason scanned with Lowrance HDS 3D Structure Scan for likely looking spots and brush piles until he found schools of crappie holding on them.
Once he saw a good school of fish on a brush pile, he stopped and fished it. He would cast a jig over the top, when they quit biting that, he would pitch to the piles from a closer distance, and finally he would get right on top of them and fish vertically on the pile.
He had one of the best fall/winter periods for crappie fishing in recent years by getting out and hunting for fish more with his electronics.
