Newport Beach to Florida, solo, by bike
Cross-country bike trip from Newport Beach, California to Jacksonville Beach, Florida, September 13, 2015 to October 20, 2015. Approximately 3000 miles, averaging 85 miles a day. Light bags, stayed in motels and hotels (some great, some not so great). Approximately 30 flats (mostly from ghost wires) but a fantastic trip, safe, great people.
Ruppin' USA - Ep.3 - Esopus Island
We head on a long kayaking trip to Esopus Island on the Hudson river in NY for some camping and exploring. 5 and a half hours of paddling in the sun, close calls from boats, and thunder storms make for one heck of a trip.

From Miami Landfill to MTB Park - Virginia Key
This is Miami, hardly the place you would expect to find mountain bike trials. Miami is more of a testament to urban development than anything else, but a little island off Key Biscane is a product of exactly that.
Frenchy is arguably the most important man in all of Miami, as far as we’re concerned anyway. With the help of hundreds of volunteers, he’s converted a landfill into beautiful switchback mountain bike trails. It’s hard to believe this whole island didn’t even exist before the Port of Miami was dredged. Nature has certainly taken it over quickly.
In 2011, the newly formed Virginia Key Bicycle club got the thumbs up to start building trails here. The city had nothing to lose and everything to gain. According to Frenchy, there have been more volunteer hours logged here in the last 5 years than any other trail in South Florida. At the beginning of the project, Frenchy’s primary goal was to make the park accessible to as many people as possible. He wanted the community to love the park, and they did. The volunteers up on this stage have logged the most time of anyone, with some of them spending over 800 hours of their own time working on the trails.
With the remaining acreage, Frenchy has plans for more difficult trails. The very people who got into mountain biking here are now growing and improving their skills, thirsty for new challenges. Today is the park’s 5 year anniversary, and there’s a brand new black diamond section opening in a few minutes. Frenchy is kicking things off by popping a bottle of champagne with a machete. I’m not sure if it’s for the anniversary or the new section, but it’s some handy machete-work nonetheless. There’s reason to celebrate too, as this park has had an enormous effect on the local cycling economy. Whenever there’s an event here, shops, bike companies, and riders come out in droves, eager to see the continued success of the park. There are enough demo bikes here for everyone.
Now that the champagne hacking is through, we’re riding a huge train through the adaptive trails, ending with the opening of the new black diamond run. I saw some stuff there yesterday which had me itching to come back today. Here goes… The new section has a little something for everyone. From what Frenchy tells me there will be more to come, including a continuation of this trail. I plan on spending a lot more time here at Virginia Key, even if I need to fight Miami’s traffic to do so.

Florida Trail, Big Cypress
Backpacking the southernmost 30 miles of the Florida National Scenic Trail through Big Cypress National Preserve is one of the toughest, wettest, and weirdest hikes in the United States. We’ve both done it, experiencing different conditions based on water levels.
With this January 2019 section hike, Sandra enjoyed the company of a group of friends to complete her full end-to-end hike of the Florida Trail. Thanks to Denali, Moose, Trailtalker, and Marshmellow for being part of the journey!
Florida Riverfront Estate on St Johns River at Switzerland Point
''Old Florida at its best! Located on historic Switzerland Point, the 3,808 square-foot residence overlooks the broad expanse of the St. Johns River at a point where it is several miles wide. Spectacular sunsets… Boating… Fishing… Shrimping… and Manatee watching. The home has been well-maintained and updated regularly with gorgeous new kitchen and three car garage. Enter the home through a gracious Foyer into a large yet comfortable Great Room with a center fireplace surrounded (above and on both sides) by 20 foot tall glass windows framing the view of the river and pool. The spacious kitchen features an eating area overlooking the pool with a fireplace tucked into the corner, making the kitchen a warm and comfortable place to gather.
Adjacent to the Kitchen is a spacious and bright Dining Room. The first floor also offers that sought-after first floor guest suite overlooking the river.
The Master Suite and three upstairs bedrooms all feature large balconies overlooking the deep swimming pool and the St. Johns River. With a total of five bedrooms and three and a half baths, this well laid out Riverfront Residence provides both drama and comfort. In fact every room except the dining room faces the riverfront.
This gracious Old Florida property is home to the several hundred-year-old Switzerland Magnolia, yet you can see the tops of the Jacksonville skyscrapers from your dock at night. Located less than 10 miles from the Interstate Beltway (I-295) circling the City of Jacksonville, you can enjoy the privacy of your estate with river breezes and expansive views, but then quickly enjoy the benefits of a nearby million person city with an international airport, or walk the streets and shops of the Ancient City, St. Augustine, just a short distance to the south. Square footage to be verified by buyer.
As a historic note to the listing, the Switzerland Magnolia is on this property at Switzerland Point. This is the likely location of Fatio's grand home on his 10,000 acre Plantation from a 1772 British land grant. With 4,000 orange trees this plantation prospered until the Seminole Wars in the mid-nineteenth century. For well over a hundred years after that, this spot was a favorite destination by boat for a picnic where you could easily pick out the Switzerland Magnolia which rose above all others.Often when the current homeowners place a spade in the ground, they find 18th Century creamware or a Spanish olive jar.

???? Black-Crowned Night Heron with Call Sound
The black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), or black-capped night heron, commonly shortened to just night heron in Eurasia, is a medium-sized heron found throughout a large part of the world, except in the coldest regions and Australasia (where it is replaced by the closely related rufous night heron, with which it has hybridized in the area of contact).
Adults are approximately 64 cm (25 in) long and weigh 800 g (28 oz). They have a black crown and back with the remainder of the body white or grey, red eyes, and short yellow legs. They have pale grey wings and white under parts. Two or three long white plumes, erected in greeting and courtship displays, extend from the back of the head. The sexes are similar in appearance although the males are slightly larger. Black-crowned night herons do not fit the typical body form of the heron family. They are relatively stocky with shorter bills, legs, and necks than their more familiar cousins, the egrets and day herons. Their resting posture is normally somewhat hunched but when hunting they extend their necks and look more like other wading birds.
Immature birds have dull grey-brown plumage on their heads, wings, and backs, with numerous pale spots. Their underparts are paler and streaked with brown. The young birds have orange eyes and duller yellowish-green legs. They are very noisy birds in their nesting colonies, with calls that are commonly transcribed as quok or woc.
The breeding habitat is fresh and salt-water wetlands throughout much of the world. The subspecies N. n. hoactli breeds in North and South America from Canada as far south as northern Argentina and Chile, N. n. obscurus in southernmost South America, N. n. falklandicus in the Falkland Islands, and the nominate race N. n. nycticorax in Europe, Asia and Africa. Black-crowned night herons nest in colonies on platforms of sticks in a group of trees, or on the ground in protected locations such as islands or reedbeds. Three to eight eggs are laid.
This heron is migratory in the northernmost part of its range, but otherwise resident (even in the cold Patagonia). The North American population winters in Mexico, the southern United States, Central America, and the West Indies, and the Old World birds winter in tropical Africa and southern Asia. You can find more details at:

American Southwest (#01): Creede, Colorado
Why the Southwest? This region is not a single destination but a series of destinations ... from the desert to the mountains. Scenic back roads offering the allure of serenity and tranquility and slower paced travel ... small towns that invite you to linger a while ... mountain vistas that bask in the changing colors of the autumn season of golden aspens and cottonwoods ... snow capped peaks that foretell the oncoming harsh season ... canyons of all manner that lift your spirits at the first light of day when the sunrises wash the cliffs in orange to the deep shadows of sunsets when the same cliffs are crimson and blood-red.
Creede: Creede was probably the wildest town in all of Colorado during its heyday of three short years. Creede was founded in 1890 after Nicholas Creede struck it rich in 1889 with silver at the Holy Moses Mine in North Willow Creek. In just one short year, Creede became a hopping boom town. The population increased by 300 people daily in 1890 and grew to more than 10,000 people before the town's sudden demise in 1893 due to plummeting silver prices. Compare that with a population of approximately 590 for all of Mineral County today, and you'll get a feel for Creede's popularity and importance when mining was king.
Creede is known for its resiliency. It suffered through major floods in 1892, 1903, 1911, 1917, and 1942. One flood killed more than 1,000 people in the suburb of North Creede. (That is more people than than live here today.) The town was rebuilt after four devastating fires; the first was the same year as the first flood, 1892. Other large fires occurred in 1895, 1902 and 1936.

Aspen Grove Trail | 4 Years After The Lake Fire | San Gorgonio Wilderness
We went up to the Aspen Grove Trail for a quick day hike. This trail head officially opened just 2 weeks ago as the fire road was closed. Back in 2015 this area was decimated by the Lake Fire. However now days the area is slowly coming back to life, with a whole new Aspen Grove starting to grow. The majority of this hike is in the San Gorgonio Wilderness in the Sand to Snow National Monument.
