A Magical Night in Rapid City, South Dakota
A few members of the Lost Convoy go exploring in downtown Rapid City. This particular moment of the trip to South Dakota remains singed into their memories.
During the Summer of 2016, the nine of us went to Rapid City, South Dakota for a few days. This road trip was inspired by playfully tossing around the idea here and there a few years ago, but was fully realised when we returned from a post-graduation trip in Hinkeley, Minnesota. Many of us had a lot of fun, but wanted to continue to explore together. Thus, after returning, we planned and planned, and eventually secured a short interval of time to escape to South Dakota to see what it had in store for us.
It was unfortunate that we were only able to spend a few days away from home. This was mostly because our schedules simply did not overlap. The only time we would all be in the same place at the same time was during the interval from July 11th to July 13th, 2016. Therefore, this became the time when we would schlep out to South Dakota.
The story of the Lost Convoy in South Dakota revolves around us nine and our two cars, and our unguided experiences in South Dakota. The full video is available at this link:
About this video: I discovered that a two hour-long video would probably be not the most well-received one, despite the fact that I love each clip in that video. I made that video really to be enjoyed by everybody who went on the trip to watch in reminiscence. I acknowledge that a video of that length might not be the most convenient for other viewers. I still wanted to show people what happened on that trip. So, in light of these considerations, I decided to upload separately a compilation of clips capturing one of the most memorable and vivid experiences on the trip (still a little lengthy, I understand, but nonetheless not two hours long.)
The reason why this was one of the most memorable experiences is quite difficult for me to articulate. We had just finished exploring the Black Hills of South Dakota, while included seeing Mt. Rushmore, stopping at scattered tourist traps, and Sheridan Lake. However, as the afternoon exhaustion started growing in some of us, others wanted to keep exploring. We noticed that we were not interacting with the environment as much as we wanted to. We can see and marvel at what there is to see and marvel at, but it is ultimately just that. We wanted to experience more, and get a feel for the environment.
The Black Hills National Forest is stunningly gorgeous, rolling with lush green trees and sporadically protruding, sun-baked rocks all massaged by the cool zephyr and the rays of the down-beating sun. We stood at the outlook for some time, inhaling and exhaling. But then we had to move on. Why did we have to move on? Our next destination was a random convenience store, whose only distinguishing feature was that it was excessively South Dakota-themed. Some of us were tired, but some of us were still not satisfied.
We did a few more things in the Black Hills National Park, but when we got back to the hotel just as the sun was droopy in the sky, a few of us escaped from the room and began to venture into the city, downtown Rapid City. Hopefully this video illustrates the purposeful aimlessness of our wandering and the excitement upon serendipitously discovering interesting places in Rapid City. Us four cannot forget this particular night.

The site also features a museum with interactive exhibits.
Nearly three million people visit Mount Rushmore each year. The busiest months are June, July and August. May, September and October are less busy and popular months to visit as well. Use the links below to plan your visit to Mount Rushmore and the surrounding Black Hills.

A Railroad Newsreel, Volume VII, 1925-1929
More railroad-related material from the Fox Movietone newsreel archives. There are four segments in this video:
00:25 The Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway ran on one of the oldest railroad rights-of-way in the country. Originally built to carry coal, it used mules, then cables, to move cars over two steep ridges. When a new line was built in the 1870's, the original line became a popular tourist attraction. It fell victim to the automobile and the Great Depression and closed in 1932.
03:20 To escape the summer heat of Washington, D.C., President Calvin Coolidge took extended summer vacations in 1925, 1926, 1927 and 1928. In 1925 he spent the summer by the Atlantic Ocean in Swampscott, Massachusetts.
For his 1927 summer vacation, President Coolidge went to the State Game Lodge in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He made a number of stops on the way there.
05:00 The first stop in the President's trip to South Dakota was in Hammond, Indiana, where he spoke at the dedication of Wicker Memorial Park.
05:28 This appears to Pierre, South Dakota, where the Presidential train stopped for Coolidge to visit the state house. The man accompanying him is Governor William Bulow.
06:58 Arriving in Rapid City, the nearest railroad stop to the State Game Lodge.
07:29 There is no information on the locations or dates of the next several scenes. If anybody recognizes the locale, please post a comment.
09:15 There is no information on this film other than the location (Ontario) and the date. It appears to have been taken from the cab roof of a train running alongside a lake.

SUMMARY
=======
South Dakota ( (listen)) is a U.S. state in the Midwestern region of the United States. It is named after the Lakota and Dakota Sioux Native American tribes, who compose a large portion of the population and historically dominated the territory. South Dakota is the seventeenth largest by area, but the fifth smallest by population and the 5th least densely populated of the 50 United States. As the southern part of the former Dakota Territory, South Dakota became a state on November 2, 1889, simultaneously with North Dakota. Pierre is the state capital and Sioux Falls, with a population of about 183,200, is South Dakota's largest city.
South Dakota is bordered by the states of North Dakota (to the north), Minnesota (to the east), Iowa (to the southeast), Nebraska (to the south), Wyoming (to the west), and Montana (to the northwest). The state is bisected by the Missouri River, dividing South Dakota into two geographically and socially distinct halves, known to residents as East River and West River.Eastern South Dakota is home to most of the state's population, and the area's fertile soil is used to grow a variety of crops. West of the Missouri, ranching is the predominant agricultural activity, and the economy is more dependent on tourism and defense spending. Most of the Native American reservations are in West River. The Black Hills, a group of low pine-covered mountains sacred to the Sioux, are in the southwest part of the state. Mount Rushmore, a major tourist destination, is there. South Dakota has a temperate continental climate, with four distinct seasons and precipitation ranging from moderate in the east to semi-arid in the west. The state's ecology features species typical of a North American grassland biome.
Humans have inhabited the area for several millennia, with the Sioux becoming dominant by the early 19th century. In the late 19th century, European-American settlement intensified after a gold rush in the Black Hills and the construction of railroads from the east. Encroaching miners and settlers triggered a number of Indian wars, ending with the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890. Key events in the 20th century included the Dust Bowl and Great Depression, increased federal spending during the 1940s and 1950s for agriculture and defense, and an industrialization of agriculture that has reduced family farming.
While several Democratic senators have represented South Dakota for multiple terms at the federal level, the state government is largely controlled by the Republican Party, whose nominees have carried South Dakota in each of the last 13 presidential elections. Historically dominated by an agricultural economy and a rural lifestyle, South Dakota has recently sought to diversify its economy in areas to attract and retain residents. South Dakota's history and rural character still strongly influence the state's culture.
