Black River & Western #60: ALCO Steam in New Jersey
Throughout the United States, Memorial Day weekend is typically one of the first times of the year that tourist railroads will bring out their steam locomotives to run for the holiday weekend. The Black River & Western Railroad, in Hunterdon County, NJ is no exception. On Sunday, May 26, 2019, the railroad trotted out it's 2-8-0 once again to run between the shops and station in Ringoes and the station in Flemington, NJ. Also added on this date for the ALCO locomotive is a short trip over the Alexauken Division to Bowne Station (and just beyond), as the Black River Railroad Historical Trust continues restoration of the line to Lambertville, NJ.
Enjoy views of the crew setting up and switching with the locomotive in the morning in Ringoes, and then trackside views throughout the day!
Steam Locomotive #60 Of The Black River & Western Railroad Steams At Flemington, New Jersey
Back in service after many years, #60 runs around her train at Flemington, NJ. This steam locomotive was originally built for the Great Western Railway in Colorado, but has been in NJ for over 40 years.
I am still struggling with correct a frame dropping problem with my camera, this test was just so-so.
Black River & Western
Black River & Western 60 operates on former Central Railroad of New Jersey trackage between Ringoes and Flemington, NJ. This 1937-built 2-8-0 original operated for the Great Western Railway of Colorado, and has been a part of BR&W since 1961.
⁴ᴷ Summer Steam On The Black River & Western
On Saturday July 6th, 2019 I was trackside along the Black River & Western Railroad in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. I have chosen to see the BRWRR's Steam train for a few reasons one of which I haven't seen it in a while, I also had original plans to see Norfolk Southern but with the recent derailment on Horseshoe Curve in Altoona PA rail traffic would be down some on the Lehigh Line so that is why I decided to see #60 instead. As for the weather today was another scorcher of heat and humidity also Thunder Storms later on in the day, please enjoy the video. Special Thanks to my folks for coming along and my dad doing the driving.
Black River & Western 60: New Jersey's Steam Locomotive
In This Video we take you to New Jersey to the Black River & Western, to see its Operating Steam Locomotive, Former Great Western 60, from the West of Colorado. 60 is a Sister of Decopod GW 90, which operates at the Strasburg Railroad. Here you will see this to 2-8-0 Consolidation, pulling trains from Flemington to Ringoes, NJ. This time when I was there she was pulling Christmas trains and that I chased 60 down the Line. There was Great Photo Spots to film 60!
I film 60, at crossings such as Dayton Rd, Copper Hill Rd, Everitts Road, Toad Ln, and Ringoes, were the BR&W RR is based at. Then we see 60 Uncoupling cars, and switching tracks. 60 is Wearing a Custom made 6 Chime Whistle. I want to thank the Crew of 60 for a Wonderful Experience, it was fun!
Black River & Western 60- is a 2-8-0 Type Consolidation built in 1937, by Alco, and was used to haul Sugar Beets and Molasses Trains on the Great Western Railroad of Colorado. During WW2, 60 was used and had her Boiler extended, due to war time restrictions. Then Finally in 1965, 60 was brought to the Black River & Western Railroad, and has been here ever since, pulling trains. Later 60 went down for 12 year Overhaul, and Returned to service again in 2012, In time for 60's, 75th Birthday! 60 has been the jem Locomotive on the Railroad!

National Train day is a day across the United States where railroads and railroading is celebrated, and the Black River and Western Railroad in Ringoes, NJ certainly had quite a celebration! In addition to a consist of equipment on display at the Flemington NJ station, the railroad was running tests on BR&W 2-8-0 #60, which has been painted in her orginal Great Western paint scheme for an upcoming Lerro Productions photo charter. We'll watch as the display train leaves Ringoes, and then watch as #60 makes her first test run to from Ringoes to Flemington and return. After that, her crew made one more test run to Flemington, where they then hooked onto the display train and brought it back to Ringoes. Enjoy, and Happy National Train Day!

The Black River & Western Railroad at Flemington and Ringoes 6/10/12
Today I set out for Flemington to see the Black River & Western's Summer Excursions. SW1200 1202 was in charge of a two car train today, and I was able to get several shots of it at both Flemington and Ringoes.
First, we see 1202 running around its train in Flemington in preparation for the 1PM departure to Ringoes. Oddly enough, after 1202 coupled up to the other end of its train, the Route 12 crossing remained active for the duration of the time the train sat in the station. Finally, the 1PM train departs, and the crossing deactivates after staying on for over 13 minutes.
We then head over to Ringoes, where I arrived in time to see the 1PM train pulling in. After heading down to the end of the line in order to run around to the other end of the train, it pulls back into the station. Finally, we see the 1:45 train depart for Flemington. Please enjoy!

Including #1202 which was hauling freight to three bridges, and Lehigh Valley #112 which was hauling the National Train Day display train to flemington. So sit back and enjoy New Jersey Railroading and Happy National Train Day from Train Day From Train Man Productions.

Black River & Western Jun 2019: Father's Day Weekend With #60
Over the course of Father's Day Weekend, The Big Banana Railfan along with TRAINMAN K & Train Chamber spent two days worth of filming and photographing the Black River & Western Railroad's regular excursion trains. The BR&W's pride and joy, 2-8-0 Consolidation #60, was the power for nearly the entire weekend and a great crew combined with a great locomotive made for quite the show! The locomotive was sporting a GTW 6 Chime whistle which sounded incredible as it echoed through the New Jersey countryside. In addition, SW1 #9206 in the Pennsylvania paint scheme is seen at work both in switching and preparing the regular train. As a special treat, we also get a look inside the cab of #60!
#60 was built by Alco in 1937 for the Great Western Railway in Colorado where she spent her working life hauling sugar beet and molasses trains. Purchased by the BR&W in 1961, #60 pulled the first scheduled tourist train over the line in May of 1965 and has seen many different appearances over the years. Here we see her in an appearance reminiscent of how she looked during World War II, with a graphite smokebox and the signature Great Western diamonds seen on the cab and rear of the tender.
Enjoy!

[BLACK RIVER & WESTERN]915 EMD SW-900 Trails On S401-13 & [CSX]3414 GE ET44AH AC44CW Leading Fay NC
The Black River & Western Railroad was started by William Whitehead in Oldwick, New Jersey, in the late 1950s. A portion of the defunct Rockaway Valley Railroad went through his back yard. He and his sons started collecting rolling stock and an engine (Lackawanna #565). They started laying tracks but then the expansion of I-78 halted their dream of building a railroad at that location. They moved their equipment to the Chester Hill Branch of the Central Railroad of New Jersey with the hope of starting a railroad there. The section of railroad they were scouting soon became landlocked by the construction of I-80.
The Black River & Western Railroad (BR&W) was incorporated in 1961. The railroad's name is derived from the Black River, a river in Chester, and the direction that the river flows. The cars were moved to Flemington, New Jersey and the search for a place to start their tourist train was continued. A leasing arrangement was created the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) that allowed a tourist train to operate from Flemington to Lambertville on the original Belvidere-Delaware Railroad (PRR Belvidere Division) Flemington Branch (originally the Flemington Railroad & Transportation Company). BR&W paid $5,000 a year and rehabilitated the railroad (the PRR operated freight service on the line during this period). Steam engine #60 pulled the first trip out of Flemington on May 16, 1965. Weekend and holiday schedules were devised. On March 16, 1970, the Black River & Western Railroad took over the ownership and operations of the entire Flemington Branch from the CNJ connection in Flemington to Flemington Branch Junction in Lambertville purchasing it from the Penn Central. With the acquisition of the railroad right of way and its freight operations, on top of the existing tourist passenger service, a true shortline railroad was born. Their base of operations was, and still is, out of Ringoes NJ. Freight interchange after the 1970 purchase was made with Penn Central at Lambertville and the CNJ in Flemington. Not long after the purchase, Penn Central filed for bankruptcy on June 21, 1970. At the time it was the biggest corporation in the United States to file for bankruptcy. Penn Central continued to operate its freight trains under bankruptcy protection until April 1, 1976 when Conrail took over operations (the last PC freight train to operate on the Belvidere Division was on March 28, 1976). The BR&W purchased three miles of trackage in the Lambertville area that was part of the Belvidere Division mainline on March 31, 1976 before Conrail took over. BR&W also purchased the Flemington-Three Bridges portion of the CNJ Flemington Branch from Somerville on this date. Although the major freight trains that hauled coal, iron ore and general freight were rerouted to other lines such as Reading Lines' North Penn Branch, CR continued operating smaller interchange freight trains to Lambertville. Since April 1976, a new interchange was being planned at Three Bridges, NJ with the ex-Lehigh Valley mainline and construction started on this in January 1977, opening in March of 1977.
Black River & Western: #60 Back in Action
HD 1080p: This year, ex-Great Western #60 at the Black River & Western Railroad in Ringoes, NJ was restored to operating condition and has been running on regular service trains since November. We found the opportunity to visit the Black River & Western on Sunday December 9th and chased 60 between Flemington and Ringoes on her first trip of the day. This is another steam locomotive that we have been meaning to catch and we have finally been able to cross her off our bucket list! For anyone watching this who lives near the BR&W, we highly suggest going to visit her! #60 will be operating on the last couple Sundays of the year, and she will certainly be back next year as well! We also have to give a shout out to our friend Nick for the heads up on 60'a schedule plus showing us the line! Hope you enjoy this video!
