How to Find the Leatherman's Cave in Watertown, CT
A lot of people have gone hiking, looking for the Leatherman's Cave in Watertown and have been unsuccessful in their search. So, here's a video that might help. This is the easiest route to the cave which is located off Thomaston Road in a wooded area owned by the State of Connecticut just up the hill and across the street from Black Rock State Park.

Day 1 of my 4 day loop hike on the Appalachian and Taconic trails in CT, MA, and NY. Bear Mtn, Round Mtn, Mount Frissell, and Brace Mtn are featured, along with some BushBuddy cooking.
Someone asked me about a map for this hike. The 'South Taconic Trails' map from the New York - New Jersey Trail Conference covers the entire route. I used the second edition, there's now a third edition, which I assume covers the same area. Link:

Hiking Shenipsit Trail, Shenipsit State Forest, Connecticut
Hiking the Shenipsit Trail in -- what else? -- Shenipsit State Forest, in Connecticut. I started at Sodom Road on CT-190, in Tolland County between Somers and Stafford Springs, south to CT-140, climbing all 300 ft. of Soapstone Mountain along the way. It was very green, but the #flowerporn was unfortunately Rated G. The next day, it was off to Stafford Motor Speedway for an Endurance Karting race!

Leatherman - Man Dressed in Patches of Leather - 19th century U.S.
We filmed Leatherman in the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Westchester, New York. The cave in which we filmed the Leatherman (played by Richard Millen) was one of the actual caves where the historical leatherman stayed at the end of the 19th century, when he was roaming along the same circuitous route that would take him roughly a month to complete. There were many tramps at this time. Enough for there to exist tramp laws in many states. Many of the so-called tramps were reportedly veterans of the Civil War, while others were people--in the vast majority men--who had been thrown out of work during what was known as the long depression that began in 1873 and ran at least until 1879. What made the leatherman memorable was that he returned regularly roughly every thirty days and his odd attire, made out of pieces of leather crudely sewn together. He was a local legend in Katonah, NY, the town where I grew up, and where I first read about him at the local library. He has stayed engraved in my memory and I am not alone in this.
