The Screenline Count (a 12 hour count of bikes leaving Manhattan) was recorded at 6,600 in 1980 but rose to 32,200 in 2012, a two and a half times increase.
In 2007, the 18 hour bike counts on the Queensboro Bridge for May, Aug, and Sept averaged 1,672 cyclists per day. In 2011 that number rose to 2,976, a 78% increase in just 4 years.
Safe, clear bike lanes encourage more cyclists. More cyclists on the road can create a culture where we have safer bike lanes. Remind drivers (in a manner you feel appropriate) to stay in their own lane, even when letting off passengers. The culture is decided by each of our actions; we shape the world our children will live in. What type streets do you want to give them?
The drop in the Cycling Risk Indicator from 369 in 2000 to 100 in 2011 represents a 73% decrease in the average risk of a serious injury experienced by commuter cyclists in New York City.
Cycling becomes much safer as the number of cyclists grows. But overall street safety is mainly governed by the car and truck drivers. In 2010, 4,280 pedestrians were killed in the United States, about one every 2 hours.
Every 7 months more pedestrians are killed by cars then those in the World Trade Center at 9/11. The simple solution to this slow motion tragedy is to enforce the New York City speed limit of 30 mph. In a collision where a car traveling 40 mph crashes into a pedestrian, the pedestrian is between 3.5 and 5.5 times more likely to die then if the car were traveling at 30mph. The chance of pedestrian fatality rises to 90% between speeds of 50 and 60 mph.
New York City has so many stop lights and traffic, that speeding rarely has a noticeable affect on total travel time. Is it worth rushing just to wait longer at the next intersection?
Much of this route is marked by sharrows (a portmanteau of share and arrow), road markings that look like a person biking in a house. Sharrows are designed to remind motorists of cyclists (only passing with at least 3 feet of clearance). Unfortunately this fails to work in heavy traffic when other cars block the view to the street markings.
In New York City, sharrows are considered a class 3 bike lane.
Class 2 lanes are buffered lanes or standard lanes (where cars my not drive).
Class 1 lanes are protected from drivers by a physical barrier (such as bollards or other parked cars).
Some have claimed that sharrows make maps look filled with bike infrastructure, but they do little to increase safety or encourage more people to cycle.
Howard Wolfson (NYC Deputy Mayor) said, When protected bike lanes are installed, injury crashes for all road users (drivers, pedestrians, cyclists), typically drop by 40 percent and by more than 50 percent in some locations.
Safe streets for all users are complete streets for all users. When was the last time you told your community board about the type of street you think your neighborhood deserves?
DLO in Legalizing prostitution
Debate training (Humour Round) on the motion that THW Legalize Prostitution in M'sia.
The twist to this debate was that everyone must fullfill a role given. Jess (girl in video) was given the role of Sex film maker/producer and she does not support legalizatino of prostitution because it will hurt her market share. Enjoy! =)

Mary’s Apparitions for the World: Paris, Rue de Bac-
Mary’s modern messages are for you! Six months before the Miraculous Medal vision, St. Catherine Laboure had an important, but little known apparition. The 1830 apparitions mark the beginning of Marian messages “for the world.” 1830 plus two hundred years brings us to Agenda 2030: Sustainable Development Transforming our World. The July apparition was very political in nature. Already Mary spoke of the menace of Communism. It was just beginning in the Communes of Paris. For the Mother of God to appear in so many places since 1830, signals something very important for our times. Mary’s apparitions form a mosaic. Her messages are not repetitive like a checkerboard. Her messages combine to form a bigger picture. In today’s talk we will focus on the July Apparition, as well as the pose Mary took as “Lady of the Globe” which is different from the Miraculous Medal image.
