The Beautiful Blue Lakes Part 1
The Beautiful Blue Lakes are set in the Mt. Sneffels wilderness in between Telluride and Ridgeway in Ouray County. There is a lower, middle, and upper lake, and the best view of the stunning lower blue lake requires a more or less quick hike up to an overlook close to the second lake and since you are here you might as well go to the third lake. And if you are a little more ambitious go up the trail from the upper lake to the Blue Lakes Pass or Mt. Sneffels ridge (13,000 ft and 3650 elevation gain) for views of all three lakes.. also making it an 11 miles round trip hike which we did in one day. The beauty of Mt. Sneffels and all the other craggy peaks is truly breathtaking!

Blue Lakes Trail – Uncompahgre National Forest [CeleGREAT OUTDOORS]
At this point, I can honestly say that this is the most beautiful location I’ve come across in Colorado, and I highly doubt that it will disappoint you, even if there still is some snow on the ground.
Sure, the altitude may get to you (I topped out at 11,761 feet – a personal best), but if you take it slow and stay hydrated you’ll make it to the top and be happy you made every step of the climb. The blue hue of the water and surrounding views are what brought me here, but pictures and videos cannot do the Blue Lakes justice… you have to see them for yourself! You’ll know exactly what I mean, when you peer down onto the Lower Blue Lake, from the rocky cliffs above.
I took this hike as a birthday treat for myself, and camped out right above the Lower Blue Lake for 2 consecutive nights, where I was greeted by plenty of varmints scurrying around, a big buck checking out my campsite (while I ate dinner down the hill), and howling canines of some type up in the mountain tops, which provided me with a wakeup call. It was truly a beautiful experience, and I’d gladly go back, perhaps sometime in August (to avoid all the snowdrifts), in order to conquer the Blue Lakes Pass and the smaller lake I noticed on Google Maps.
HOW DO YOU GET HERE?
There are actually a couple different ways to reach the Blue Lakes, but I opted for the easier hike and the easier drive, so that’s where I’ll direct you. So, click here for directions to where you’ll want to park your car before you start your hike:
There seemed to be plenty of parking spaces available, and no one will mess with your car while you’re off on your adventure. The Blue Lakes Trail starts at the other end of the parking area, as I’m sure you’ll notice the sign, info board, and trail logbook. Unless you really want a challenging hike, complete with giant snowdrifts to hike over and extra chilly nights, I wouldn’t plan on coming here until July. I hiked this trail on June 20th and, as you got higher in elevation, there were plenty of big snowdrifts I had to hike over, in shorts. You will also have to wade through water to continue along the trail, at two different points, so wear boots and socks that dry quickly, if they’re not waterproof! The first water crossing wasn’t that deep when I went, and only one of the footsteps I took resulted in a soggy boot, so it’s nothing to be too concerned about. In fact, once you cross the first little creek, you’ll know that you’re about halfway to the first lake. Now, the second patch of flowing water was a bit concerning for me, since the water was really flowing and it happens to be at the top of a waterfall, but with slow and careful steps you’ll make it across, even if the water does come halfway up your calves. But you’ll only have to wade through water the second time if you plan on going up to the two upper Blue Lakes.
And, even though I’m sure this goes without saying, if you plan on camping here, pack as light as you possibly can – your shoulders and legs will thank you! The 3.3 miles of hiking to the Lower Blue Lake is tougher than you might think, and you still have about a mile of hiking, as well as over 700 feet in elevation gain, to deal with before you make it to the Upper Blue Lake.
WANT TO SEE THE PATH I TOOK?
If you want to see the actual path I took, how long it took, the elevation gain and all that, then click here:
And if you want to see the second leg, up to see the upper lakes, you can click here for those stats:

Why Hike Blue Lakes and Blue Lakes Pass
Turquoise lakes nestled in dramatic glacial cirques, wildflower-filled alpine meadows ringed by craggy peaks and ridges and a pass with see-forever views makes the Blue Lakes trail a top hike on my “to do list” on every trip to southwest Colorado.
The hike, one of the few in the Mount Sneffels Wilderness, culminates at spectacular Blue Lakes Pass (13,000-ft.) located on a steep ridge extending south from Mt. Sneffels (14,150-ft). Along the way the trail visits three scenic lakes nestled in a beautiful glacial basin set amid rugged ridges and peaks over 13,000-f

Blue Lakes & Molas Pass | near Ouray | Colorado Trails
Blue Lakes trail is over 7 miles out and back (to a turquoise Lower Blue Lake). Steep with alpine scenery, waterfall and plenty of widlflowers. More moderate is Molas Pass. We made it to a ridge with a panoramic view and turned back, about 6 miles total. Conifer Newcomers & Neighbors enjoyed hiking both trails at the end of July 2019.

Autumn in Telluride, Colorado
More or less a Zen look at Autumn in Telluride, Colorado.
Telluride is located at an elevation of 8,750 feet in an isolated spot in Southwest Colorado. From the west, Colorado Route 145 is the most common way into Telluride; however, there are two alternate passes to enter the town: Imogene Pass and Black Bear Pass.
On the eastern side of town, there are two waterfalls, Ingram Falls, which is visible from town, and Bridal Veil Falls and the Bridal Veil Hydroelectric plant, which are just out of sight from town to the right of Ingram. The power plant house was leased for a period of time by Eric Jacobsen, who restored the house and the generator inside. The hydroelectric plant was built in 1895 to power the Smuggler-Union Mine. It is the second-oldest alternating current power plant in the world, the first being the Ames Hydroelectric Generating Plant near Ophir, Colorado, also in San Miguel County.

The town is served by air transportation via Telluride Regional Airport (TEX), the highest altitude commercial airport in the United States. The airport is considered challenging by pilots because of frequent adverse weather conditions, high altitude, and the extremely rugged mountain terrain which surrounds the airport on nearly all sides. Major airline service is provided seasonally into Montrose, approximately 70 miles north by road.
Beyond the ski lifts, Telluride is now widely recognized as an all-season resort. Telluride Ski Resort is definitely the main attraction in the winter. But when summer comes around, Telluride transforms into an outdoor recreation hot spot, with tourists visiting to enjoy mountain biking, hiking, river rafting, sightseeing and more. The Telluride Tourism Board promotes tourism in the region.
Telluride is also home to many endurance events. The Hardrock 100, held in July, has a major aid station in the town park. The Fall Tilt, a 12-hour downhill mountain biking event, is held in Mountain Village each September. And the 40-mile Telluride Mountain Run loops the town in a wide swathe that includes some of the most difficult and scenic trails in the area.
Telluride, along with Ridgway, are the two cities closest to the New Mexico, Utah and Nevada that allow the recreational sales of marijuana.

Yes...that thumbnail says September! And I do realize its now Jan 16 that this is being published. That's how far behind we are in videos ????
-------------------------------------------------
We couldn't wait for my parents to see Ouray and Silverton, CO. This is one of the most beautiful parts of Colorado and not much compares to the incredible San Juan Mountains. We knew my dad would love the abundance of off-roading opportunities (jeeps, ATVS and UTVs galore!). They got to see so much in our short time there, including the Narrow Gauge Railroad, Clear Lake, Box Canyon Park, the Million Dollar Highway, plus tons of wildlife (including their first moose!). It was such an incredible trip and in my dads words the best trip of their lives.

Bridal Veil Falls // Telluride Colorado Dayhike
Our recent trip to Southwest Colorado started in one of the most beautiful mountains towns, Telluride. The Bridal Veil Falls Trail is located at the end of the box canyon surrounding Telluride. The trail follows a 4x4 road that switchbacks up to the falls. This road ends for vehicles just before the falls by a gate and only hikers/bikers are allowed further. Bridal Veil is the tallest freefalling water fall in Colorado and drops 365 feet. We clocked this hike at 6.1 miles and took us about 3 hours (with a very slow pace taking many pictures).
This is a great doable hike for most skill levels and comes with a great sense of accomplishment at the top of the falls. Get there early to avoid sun and crowds, especially if you're driving up since it gets more sketchy to park when more vehicles are on the trail.
