Blue Ocean Whale Watch - Moss Landing, CA
Interview with Kate Cummings, owner of Blue Ocean Whale Watch, Moss Landing (Monterey), CA.
Blue Ocean Whale Watch in Moss Landing
A Monterey Bay whale watching trip with Blue Ocean Whale Watch is the perfect activity for families, ecotourists, and photographers. Tours depart from Moss Landing Harbor, which is halfway between Santa Cruz and Monterey – at the heart of the Monterey Bay and the closest port to the nutrient-rich Monterey Submarine Canyon.
Monterey Bay whale watching tours are becoming more and more popular, so make sure you book your trip in advance; or you can always opt for a chartered whale watching cruise around the Monterey Bay area and enjoy some of the best whale watching in the world.
Blue Ocean Whale Watching - Moss Landing, CA
Whale Watching about 10min. off shore in Moss Landing, CA. Schools of anchovies were everywhere, which brought the Humpbacks in droves. We saw one feeding that had over 12 Humpbacks working on a single bait ball. Yes, that's a standing paddle boarder in the distance, they came pretty close to him. The one breaching is a calf. Within the 4-hour tour, our boat witnessed about a dozen humpback breaches!
Whale Watching - Moss Landing, California
Whale watching is one of the things we like to do after moving to California. You can do whale watching all year around right off the California coast, the perfect location is Monterey Bay because it's a marine sanctuary, the fish are abundant. First time we went with Sea Goddess from Pacific Grove wharf, but it was long ways away. It took one hour each way from shore to the submarine canyon where whales hangout to feed. Second time we went with Sanctuary Cruises in Moss Landing, which is much closer to the whales, within 30 minutes boat ride we already saw whales! The whale watching operators in Pacific Grove have bigger boats, can accommodate more people, also more stable sailing on the sea. Sanctuary Cruises has smaller boat, but we like them the most because less people on the boat and you can get closer look of whales. That's why we were with them twice already! You need to take precaution for the boat ride, if you easily get sea sick. We have seen humpback whales, blue whales, dolphins, Mola Mola; we haven't seen orcas yet. We will keep going until we see them!

Moss Landing Whale Watching
Our late afternoon trips have been amazing. Here we came across some rampant lunge-feeding humpback whales.

Humpback Whales, Moss Landing Harbor
Humpback Whales near Moss Landing Harbor, California. Hearing their breathing was striking. It was also interesting how serpentine the whales looked in person. This was on a Blue Ocean tour. A good day for whale watching, even if the whales weren't in a breaching mood.
Whale Watching at the Mouth of the Moss Landing Harbor
The opportunities to get close to the whales have been plentiful this year. Some bold greys have even ventured into the harbor. Thank the bloom of anchovies in the Monterey Bay. When the food is this readily available, the whales, seals, gulls and other wildlife will abound too. This video was shot by a friend from a boat just outside the harbor mouth.
Lunge feeding humpback whales in Monterey Bay, Califonia
This was one of the most memorable encounters we have ever had with whales on the Kahuna. Two large groups of 15 humpback whales were alternating lunge feedings on a school of anchovies right at the surface. This was an impressive feeding frenzy with birds, dolphins and sea lions feeding alongside the whales. No wonder Monterey Bay is called the Serengeti of the Sea

USA Monterey CA Whale watching

A great day with the whales.
