BREC Bluebonnet Swamp - Trails in Louisiana Near Baton Rouge
My recent hike (2-13-18) with my youngest hiking partner! Over a mile of gravel paths and boardwalks link varied habitats such as the cypress-tupelo swamp, beech-magnolia and hardwood forests. Wildlife is plentiful at Bluebonnet Swamp, including hundreds of bird species utilizing the site throughout the year.

Places to see in ( Baton Rouge - USA )
Baton Rouge is a city on the Mississippi River, and the capital of Louisiana. Antebellum landmarks include the castle-like Old Louisiana State Capitol, now a museum, and Magnolia Mound Plantation, with its French Creole house. LSU Rural Life Museum is a complex of refurbished buildings illustrating 18th- and 19th-century life. On the river, the USS Kidd is a retired WWII destroyer that is now a museum.
Baton Rouge is a major industrial, petrochemical, medical, research, motion picture, and growing technology center of the American South. It is the location of Louisiana State University, the LSU System's flagship university and the largest institution of higher education in the state. It is also the location of Southern University, the flagship institution of the Southern University System, the only historically black college system in the nation. The Port of Greater Baton Rouge is the 10th-largest in the United States in terms of tonnage shipped, and is the farthest upstream Mississippi River port capable of handling Panamax ships.
The Baton Rouge area owes its historical importance to its strategic site upon the Istrouma Bluff, the first natural bluff upriver from the Mississippi River Delta. This allowed development of a business quarter safe from seasonal flooding. In addition, the city built a levee system stretching from the bluff southward to protect the riverfront and low-lying agricultural areas. The city is a culturally rich center, with settlement by immigrants from numerous European nations and African peoples brought to North America as slaves or indentured servants. It was ruled by seven different governments: French, British, and Spanish in the colonial era, West Floridian, United States territory and state, Confederate, and United States again.

Hawk and Prothonotary Warbler at Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center By John Hartgerink
By John Hartgerink
Filmed July 13, 2015
We have a 99% success rate with these installed nest boxes, but once in a while, nature happens. This camera was set up and not monitored by anyone at the time of the predation event. A special thanks to John Hartgerink for capturing this video and to Baton Rouge Audubon Society and the Louisiana Bird Observatory for their work with Prothonotary Warblers.

BREC Sandy Creek Park - Trails in Louisiana Near Baton Rouge
My recent (8/9/17) hike of the Sandy Creek trail system. Mainly used for horse riding, the wide open trails are a nice change of pace from the single track I'm used to. This area is still under development by BREC, and I am excited to see what they do with it!

On the Road at the Speed of Mike S01E17 - Louisiana - Baton Rouge
After leaving New Orleans, we head into Blue Bonnet Swamp Nature Center to check out the snakes, turtles and lizards that inhabit the area's swampland. A short drive into downtown Baton Rogue brings us to the banks of the mighty Mississippi. The most prominent sites and the new and old capital buildings, the former being the tallest capital building in the country and the later looking like a castle! Other highlights are the cities gambling river boats, military displays, sculptures, fountains and parks. Continuing on through the state I can't help but bring back my terrible Louisiana accent. The last portion of the state is a vist to Gator Chateua where we actually do see some gators (babies), followed by a scenic drive down to Louisiana's Gulf coast toward Holly Beach, passing nature reserves Creole Trail and Sabine National Wildlife Refuge and tons of gas/oil refineries on the way
Courtship Behavior in Broad-banded Watersnakes in Louisiana
Here you can observe courtship behavior in nonvenomous Broad-banded Watersnakes, Nerodia fasciata confluens, just off the boardwalk at Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. As the video starts you can see two darker individuals on the right, with the larger one in front being the female. The darker male is behind her and is partially obscured. He is in the act of courting the female to mate, though it does not appear he ever successfully copulates during the video. The more brightly colored male on the left eventually tries his best to woo the female. The original male does not give up his ground. Eventually the female moves to a new position on the log, tossing the lighter colored male into the water. As the video ends the original male can be seen making his way back to her new position on the log.

Bayou Sauvage NWR - Trails in Louisiana Near New Orleans
My recent hike (8-23-18) of the 5.7 miles of trails at Bayou Sauvage NWR. One of the last remaining marsh areas adjacent to Lakes Pontchartrain and Borgne, the refuge contains a wide variety of wildlife habitat, including bottomland hardwoods, freshwater, and brackish marshes, lagoons, canals, borrow pits, and natural bayous. An important stopover along the Mississippi Flyway, these diverse habitats meet the needs of approximately 340 bird species throughout the year. The American alligator is also a common sight on the refuge.

Fountainebleau State Park - Trails in Louisiana Near New Orleans
The 2,800-acre park is located on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain. The park has two trails, including a 1.5-mile nature trail and a 4.8-mile hiking trail to Bayou Cane. The nature trail leads to a short boardwalk overlooking the marsh, then passes through the ruins of an old sugar mill. Over 400 different species of wildlife live in and around Fontainebleau. The Park is bordered on three sides by water--Lake Pontchartrain, Bayou Cane, and Bayou Castine--and characterized by a convergence of diverse ecosystems, it has a multitude of habitats for birds.
