Generations of Jacksons…
Colonel Edward Jackson, a Revolutionary War figure, originally settled the mill on the West Fork River in 1800. Three generations of Jacksons operated mills at this site which boasted saw and grist mills, a carpenter shop, blacksmith forge, quarters for 12 slaves, numerous barns and outbuildings, and a general store on 1500 acres of prime forest and pasture land.
Six year old Thomas Jackson and his four year old sister Laura came here as orphans in 1830 to live with their step-grandmother Elizabeth Jackson and their uncle Cummins Jackson. Thomas lived here until leaving for West Point in 1842.
Tom and Laura remained close throughout their lives until, like so many families, they found themselves on opposite sides of the Civil War. Laura opened her house in Beverly, WV to Union troops as a hospital. Thomas joined the Confederacy and became immortalized at the First Battle of Bull Run as the general the world would know as “Stonewall”.
Cummins Jackson died with no last will and testament. Over the years, the Jackson farmstead was divided and passed through several hands. In 1921, property that included the original Jackson homestead was given to West Virginia University to establish a youth facility. The deed agreement required that the homeplace marker be maintained. Our historic area has grown from that simple beginning. It has taken a collaborative effort to ensure that this piece of our past is forever remembered.

New River Gorge National River
The New River Gorge National River is a unit of the United States National Park Service designed to protect and maintain the New River Gorge in southern West Virginia. Established in 1978, the NPS-protected area stretches for 53 miles from just downstream of Hinton to Hawks Nest State Park near Ansted.
Recorded on June 4, 2003. The video begins on a cloudy morning at the Grandview scenic overlook. Next I pass over Sandstone Mountain on I-64 and that is followed by Standstone Falls. There is a brief stop at Bluestone Dam and Lake before proceeding to Pipestem Resort State Park. At Pipestem I ride the tramway down the mountain to the edge of the New River. Next, the New River Gorge Bridge, which carries U.S. Highway 19 over the New River at a height of 876 feet, making it the highest vehicular bridge in the Americas, and the second-highest in the world. The video concludes at Hawk's Nest State Park where I ride the tram down to the River and board a jet boat for a turbulent ride down the New River to the New River Gorge Bridge.

SEEING THE CHURCH in an RV
Today is Sunday and we went to not one, but TWO churches. Being in a new city we are trying to find a place to call home. Both churches were friendly and the boys seemed to have fun. We ended the day with a surprise pajama run late night trip to Sonic for half price shakes :)

Irish Immigrant Stone Dam at Allen Station, Built In 1874 Allen Texas for Houston and Texas Railroad
In 1874, the Houston and Texas Central Railway Company was expanding north from Houston to Denison, Texas. Water stops were necessary along the route at 7 - 10 mile intervals to keep the steam locomotives going. At this location Irish immigrants constructed the stone dam you see, and later German immigrants maintained the water stop. The purpose of the water reservoir was to fill the water tower located along the railroad tracks just to the west. The foundation of the tower and the foundation of the pump house are still visible today. The section house where the workers lived is long gone.
In 1912, the railroads needed more water, and a larger dam was constructed just to the south on Cottonwood Creek, submerging this dam. In the 1960’s, the 1912 dam was breached, majestically revealing the original 1874 dam.
This railroad water reservoir dam is thought to be the only one left in the United States. The citizens of Allen are proud of the role Allen Station played in the development of North Texas.
