The Blythe Intaglios or Blythe Geoglyphs are a group of gigantic figures incised on the ground near Blythe, California in the Colorado Desert. The ground drawings or geoglyphs were created by humans for an, as of yet, unknown reason. The intaglios are located east of the Big Maria Mountains, about 15 miles (24 km) north of downtown Blythe.
Quite a long video, it shows me wandering, with increasing tiredness, between the spread out figures. The terrain and the temperate were quite difficult for this photographer as you may hear from my comments and more desperate sounding voice. The location is truly hot and unless you have a 4WD and/or are willing to drive across the dirt, quite difficult to move between the 3 sites.
This would look truly spectacular from a drone height although I suspect there is some sort of ban on using them in this location (although I do not recall seeing any signs saying this).
I would be interested in hearing from a viewer who can explain why the large figure is fenced in the way it is excluding a great deal of the figure.

The Blythe Geoglyphs ~ Questions & Orion
Southern California. Discovered during a flight in 1932 the Blythe Intaglios, as they are known, are the most famous geoglyphs in the ancient U.S.. A site full of questions.

The Blythe Intaglios were first discovered on November 12th, 1931 by army air corps pilot George Palmer while flying from the Hoover Damn to Los Angeles. His discovery led to a survey of the area, which resulted in the figures becoming classified as State Historic Monument No 101 and referred to as Giant Desert Figures. Lacking funds during the Depression era, it would take until the 1950s to investigate the site further.
The largest of the intaglios depicts a male figure or giant, measuring 171 feet. A secondary figure, measuring 102 feet from head to toe, is of a male with a distinct phallus. The last human figure is oriented north-south, its arms are outstretched, its feet pointing outward and has visible knees and elbows. It measures 105.6 feet from head to toe

The intaglios are found east of the Big Maria Mountains, about 15 miles (24 km) north of downtown Blythe, just west of U.S. Highway 95 near the Colorado River. The largest human figure is 171 feet (52 m) long. The intaglios are best viewed from the air.
The geoglyphs or intaglios (anthropomorphic geoglyphs) were created by scraping away layers of darker rocks or pebbles to reveal a stratum of lighter-valued soil. While these gravel pictographs are found through the deserts of southeastern California, human figures are found only near the Colorado River. The figures are so immense that many of them were not observed by non-Indians until the 1930s.[1] The set of geoglyphs includes several dozen figures, thought to be ceremonial in nature.[2] Many of them are believed to date from the prehistoric period, but their age and the identity of their creators are still uncertain. Jay von Werlhof and his collaborators obtained 13 AMS radiocarbon dates for the figures, ranging from 900 BCE to 1200 CE.[3]
The majority of the Blythe geoglyphs are located 16 miles (26 km) north of Blythe, California, off Highway 95, at the Interstate 10 exit and down several dirt roads for 15.5 miles (24.9 km). An historical marker placed by the California Department of Public Works, Division of Highways, commemorates the site.[9] Chain link fences surround several of the figures.[10] The intaglios were featured prominently in the Hardy Boys novel Mystery of the Desert Giant, published in 1961

Blythe is a city in Riverside County, California, United States, in the Palo Verde Valley of the Lower Colorado River Valley region, an agricultural area and part of the Colorado Desert along the Colorado River. Blythe was named after Thomas H. Blythe, a San Francisco financier, who established primary water rights to the Colorado River in the region in 1877. The city was incorporated on July 21, 1916. The population was 20,817 at the 2010 census.
In the early or mid-1870s, William Calloway (known as Oliver Calloway in some sources), an engineer and a former captain of the 1st California Infantry Regiment, explored an area across the Colorado River from Ehrenberg, Arizona and found its potential for development. Calloway made preliminary surveys and filed land claims under the Swamp Land Act of 1850. He interested the wealthier Thomas Henry Blythe (real last name Williams), who was born in Mold, Wales, to undertake development and settlement of an empire located next to the Colorado. On July 17, 1877, Blythe filed his first claim for Colorado River water on what was to become the Blythe Intake Blythe appointed another man named George Irish as manager to assist Calloway in building an irrigation system. Calloway died in a Chemehuevi attack in March 28, 1880, and was replaced by C.C. Miller, the father of Frank Augustus Miller. Thomas Blythe died on April 4, 1883; his only revisit to the valley was in November 1882. After his death, the work in the valley halted and Blythe's estate subsequently went into litigation between his illegitimate daughter Florence and other claimants. The California Supreme Court up to 1895, and the U.S. Supreme Court towards the 1900s, ruled that Florence was the holder of the estate, after several years of preceding rulings in favor of her and appeals against her in these courts.
Frank Murphy and Ed Williams, who were involved on the cattle industry in southeastern Arizona, came to the area in 1904 and were convinced it was well-suited for cattle and farming. With the Hobson brothers from Ventura County, California, they bought Blythe's estate and formed the Palo Verde Land and Water Company. During 1911-12, W.F. Holt, who helped develop nearby Imperial Valley, was the company's general manager.
On August 8, 1916, the California Southern Railroad reached Blythe from the desert station of Rice, California, then known as Blythe Junction. It was later renamed to honor G.W. Rice, an engineer and superintendent of the railroad. The dramatic growth in the valley following this event attracted national attention. Production totals increased annually from virtually nothing to near $8,000,000 in few years, primarily from cotton and cotton seed shipped to the ports.The lower cotton prices in 1920 ended this prosperous time. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway began leasing the line in 1921 and acquired it in the end of 1942.
The first automobile bridge over the Colorado River between Blythe and Ehrenberg was constructed in 1928 to replace a cable ferry service.The bridge's successor was built in the early 1960s and it was expanded to four lanes and a pedestrian walkway in early 1974.
In 1972, Interstate 10 was built through the city, replacing US 60 and the previously decommissioned US 70 in Hobsonway as the main thoroughfare.

California at last! Blythe was pretty, but while I was busy sight-seeing, a rain squall snuck up and stuck me under a k-mart's awning until nearly sunset. Low on options, I opted for an abandoned house I spotted from the road after ascertaining it was empty.
