Cambodia sets sights on luxury spa industry
(9 Jul 2017) LEADIN:
Cambodia's burgeoning tourism industry is setting its sights on the luxury market.
Spas and wellness retreats are opening across the country in an attempt to lure high-spending visitors.
STORYLINE:
Welcome to a Cambodian slice of paradise.
The Navutu Dreams Resort and Wellness Retreat outside Siem Reap is just one of many spa resorts aimed at the luxury market.
Just 20 minutes from Angkor Wat, the resort covers one and a half hectares of landscaped tropical gardens with three large pools and 28 guest houses.
The primary aim is relaxation:
Here we go beyond the typical spa, says General Manager, Sara Moya. Here we offer gentle fast and detoxing for people who are stressed, for people who just want to feel more fit... And we also offer alternative healing for people who would like to get de-stressed of their stresses with chakra balancing, with a Tibetan sound therapy.
The resort offers twice daily yoga classes and many types of massage and other healing therapies.
A standout experience is the sound bath, where Tibetan bowls are used to immerse guests in layers of undulating sound vibrations.
Axel Van Laer from Antwerp, Belgium, is staying at Navutu Dreams with his parents.
Everything is completely to our liking so far. The food is perfect, all fresh, the staff are obliging, friendly and always at your service. Every question gets answered with a smile, he says.
According to the Phnom Penh based Bodia Spa there are now around 100 spas or wellness centres in Cambodia. There are no current official figures, but the industry group, Intelligent Spas estimates that spas in Cambodia are now generating around USD 20 million a year compared to USD 6 million is 2007.
While many spas in Cambodia have well-trained staff and use only certified wellness products, others do not, so it's important to choose carefully warns Marissa Carruthers of ASIAlife, Cambodia's leading English language magazine.
One of the things I would recommend looking out for when you're trying to choose a spa is to check whether the staff have been trained properly and also to check maybe the products that are being used to make sure they're quality lotions and oils and that kind of thing, she says.
But Cambodia's got some fantastic spas that would rival the ones that we're used to back in the west at a fraction of the price.
Besides large scale wellness resorts, Cambodia has lots of smaller city spas where people can drop in anytime for a treatment.
Frangipani Spa offers the ultimate indulgence... a four-hand body massage, where two skilled therapists co-ordinate to take you to a world of relaxation, or a hot-stone massage to ease your aching muscles.
The growth of spas and wellness centres is also creating more jobs for local people, like Sok Sut, the head masseuse at Frangipani Spa,
I often had to work overtime days and nights without any time off if urgent work was assigned. After that my aunt got me a new job as a cleaner at the Frangipani Spa owner's house. Two years later, I was promoted to work at the spa itself and to train as a massage therapist. This has now become a career path for me because it has opened many doors of opportunity. Plus I was able to take English lessons and I get to meet customers from many countries, she says.
Bodia Spa is located a step away from Phnom Penh's busy riverside.
The 'Cambodian cocoon' makes the most of the country's natural ingredients, producing a range of spa products domestically under the respected Bodia Nature brand.
We offer traditional massage, oil massage, body scrub, facial, pedicure, manicure, waxing… and all of our products are totally natural too, says masseuse Noun Sophea.

Deep in the forests of Cambodia’s Siem Reap province, an ancient stone city soars skyward. This is the sprawling complex of Angkor Archaeological Park. The site is located in the northwestern region of the country and is only four miles from the city of Siem Reap. The Khmer Empire’s various capitals thrived here from the 9th to 15th centuries, over an empire that stretched from Myanmar to Vietnam. Including forested areas and newly discovered “suburbs” Angkor covers more than 400 square miles—an area considerably larger than New York City’s five boroughs.
The massive Angkor Wat is the most famed of all Cambodia’s temples—it even appears on the nation’s flag. The 12th century “temple-mountain” was built as a spiritual home for the Hindu god Vishnu.
The temples of Angkor are architectural masterpieces laden with artistic treasures like the bas-relief galleries that tell enduring tales of Cambodian history and legend.
Angkor is as much about water as it is about stone—the site boasts an enormous system of artificial canals, dikes, and reservoirs. The West Baray reservoir is the largest of which at 5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. These massive works skillfully harnessed river and rainwater to quench the thirst of some 750,000 residents in the world’s largest preindustrial city. That water also irrigated wealth-producing crops like rice, which served the Khmer as currency.
It’s still a mystery to scientists why the city’s rulers abandoned the site and resettled near the modern capital of Phenom Penh. Some scholars speculate that the downfall of this elaborate water system led to the end of Angkor.
The town of Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor and is filled with lodging, dining, and tour-package options for all budgets. Those preferring to travel by boat can also make the trip from Phnom Penh in some five or six hours—about the same travel time as by road. The airport in Siem Reap has service to Phnom Penh and regular flights abroad to Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Laos. The airport in Siem Reap has service to the capital and regular flights to nearby countries.
Peak tourist season in Angkor is December and January, when rainfall is less likely and the climate is most kind. No matter the time of year, a visit to Angkor is sure to leave you awestruck.

Cambodia Street Food - Authentic KHMER CURRY FEAST and Vietnamese Pho in Phnom Penh!
One of the best Khmer food curry meals I’ve ever had!

Orussey Market is one of the best and most local markets in Phnom Penh, and for any food lover, or shopping lover, it should be high on your list of places to go when you’re in Phnom Penh. There are other markets like Central Market and Russian Market, but Orussey Market tops them all.
One morning we headed off on a Cambodian street food tour of Orussey Market. I first wanted to explore the outside area of the market. One of the most popular stall we came across was actually serving pho, famous as a Vietnamese noodle soup. The crowd eating there and the aroma of the broth forced us into sitting down to have a bowl and it didn’t disappoint. The beef pho was excellent, one of the best bowls I’ve had in a very long time. Pho - 8,000 KHR ($1.93) per bowl
Inside Orussey Market you will find just about everything in Cambodia that you can think of, from clothes to food to accessories, it’s all in the market somewhere. We headed to the food court area, but there wasn’t a lot going on, so we decided to just have a cup of iced coffee.
My hopes for lunch were on a Khmer rice and curry feast, and so we kept walking around the market, until we stumbled into a prepared curry dishes stall that had an amazing array of different Cambodian dishes. It was a love at first street food kind of place.
We proceeded to order a huge Cambodian street food curry feast and it was one of the best Khmer meals I’ve ever had. I can’t even begin to tell you the names of all the different dishes, but the prahok, a paste made with fermented fish sauce, was excellent. Total price for entire Khmer curry meal - 50,000 KHR ($12.09)
On the outside of Orussey Market you’ll find lots of Cambodian street food snacks. I was pretty full honestly after that curry meal, so I just had a bag of candied and pickled bright colorful fruits. They were topped in a sugary chili salty coating, and though a little sweet for me, they were pretty awesome. Fruit bag - 3,000 KHR ($0.73)
If you’re a food lover in Phnom Penh, take a trip to Orussey Market for some amazing local Cambodian food and culture!
