During the Cambodian New Year in Kampot, we visited Bokor hill's abandoned casino! There were many other abandoned houses and lots of family gatherings.

Ghost Mountain -- Bokor Hill Station, Kampot, Cambodia
Bokor HIll Station was established by the French in the 1920s on top of Phnom Bokor near Kampot, Cambodia to escape the stifling heat of Phnom Penh. They built a grand hotel and casino from which to enjoy the costal views below, which were grand indeed but for the heavy fog swirling the mountain top. It was abandoned several times over the years and eventually became a battleground between the Khmer Rouge and the Vietnamese in 1979. The Khmer Rouge holed up in the French Catholic Church while the Vietnamese took up positions in the former Casino less than a kilometer away. The Casino is now being renovated while the old church is in a ruined state as it was after the battles. There is a royal residence, in ruins, nearby. The fog still swirls; eerie sounds emanate from the place. I'm sure it is haunted.

Die Bokor Hill Station ist Anfang der 20er Jahre von den französischen Kolonialherren im Süden Kambodschas errichtet und bereits in den 40er Jahren während des ersten Indochina-Krieges wieder aufgegeben worden. Auf der mit 1000m höchsten Erhebung der Dâmrei Mountains gebaut, diente sie aufgrund des kühleren Klimas als Erholungsort. Zur Station gehörten das Bokor Palace Hotel mit Casino, diverse Läden und eine katholische Kirche.
Anfang der 70er Jahre übernahmen die Roten Khmer das Areal und blieben bis in die 90er Jahre, womit Bokor Hill eines der letzten Rückzugsgebiete der Roten Khmer darstellt.
Die Sokimex Gruppe baut eine hundert Meter entfernt bereits an einem Luxushotel und ist im Begriff, das ehemalige Palace Hotel zu restaurieren, welches schon mit Baustützen durchzogen ist. Die anderen Ruinen sind bisher unangetastet geblieben.

Got my motorbike all fixed up and headed out to a massive waterfall to cliff jump into then went to the top of this mountain with my friend and we got caught in some insane fog on our motorbikes

Bokor Hill Station (in Khmer: កស្ថានីយភ្នំបូកគោ Kosthany Phnom Bokor) is a French ghost town in Preah Monivong National Park, southern Cambodia. Construction started in 1921 on Dâmrei Mountains, about 20 km as the crow flies (42 km by the road) west of Kampot. It was used as the location for the final showdown of the movie City of Ghosts (2002) and the 2004 film R-Point. More info

Exploring Bokor Hill Station - Cambodia
Built by the colonial French settlers in the 1920s, atop Bokor Mountain in Preah Monivong National Park, the hill station was to be an escape from the tropical weather of Cambodia. Abandoned in 1972 when the Khmer Rouge took over, the hill station now has abandoned buildings that provide an eerie effect with all the fog.

The 140,000 hectares that make up this national park are diverse and somewhat intriguing. You will find historic relics (both those abandoned and those being restored), fully functioning temples, incredible views and unspoilt nature, the odd ridiculously large and opulent hotel and casino and plenty of up and coming development, all within Phnom Bokor National Park. There is no entry fee for Phnom Bokor National Park and it is undoubtedly the single best day trip from Kampot. The journey all the way up to the top of Mount Bokor is only about 40km from Kampot’s city centre and takes just over an hour one way. We spent the better part of a day riding around the park and could easily have stayed longer, particularly if you also want to hike. We enjoyed having a scooter and riding the winding roads, as they are better than most in Cambodia! Be cautious, however, if you are not entirely comfortable riding on two wheels. And make sure to wear a helmet!
