Port Moresby (Bomana) Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery dating from World War II near Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The cemetery contains the graves of those who died in the fighting in the former Territory of Papua and on Bougainville Island. The remains of 3,824 Commonwealth soldiers, 699 of them unidentified are buried in the cemetery; as well two others: a Dutch citizen and one burial not related to the war.
Over 600 Indian soldiers who fought in the Second World War are buried at the cemetery.
A turnoff near Fourteen Mile takes you to the large and carefully tended Bomana War Cemetery, where 4000 unknown PNG and Australian WWII soldiers are seeing out eternity, overlooked by a vast rain tree. American soldiers who died in PNG were generally shipped home for burial. The inscriptions on identical white gravestones read: 'A soldier of the 1939–1945 war. Known unto God.' It's a serene yet sobering place. PMV 16 from Gordons Market runs past the gate.

Australia’s Governor General Attends Anzac Day Dawn Service at Bomana War Cemetery
The ANZAC Day Dawn Service was held today at the Bomana War Cemetery outside Port Moresby.
Australia’s Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove and Lady Cosgrove were joined by PNG’s Head of State, Bob Dadae and Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.
It’s the 75th anniversary of the New Guinea campaign, where the hostile nature of PNG’s terrains contributed a large part to the terrible infantry casualties.

Bomana War Cemetery North of Port Moresby is the resting place of of more than 2000 ANZAC soldiers who died during WW2.
These were brave men who died not knowing the victory that would follow. These men were someones Father, someones Husband, someones brothers and someones sons. They died fearing for the safety of their loved ones. They died in the fighting and they died in the mud of the Kokoda trail. Some were murdered as prisoners of war by the Japanese.
We must never forget these brave young men nor their selfless sacrifice. The average age of the men buried here is late teens and early twenties. So many lives cut short. So many lives waisted.
Z Special Unit soldiers laid to rest in Papua New Guinea
The final two Z Special Unit soldiers killed on Kairiru Island during World War II have been laid to rest at the Port Moresby (Bomana) War Cemetery in Papua New Guinea. Lance Corporal Spencer Walklate and Private Ronald Eagleton were buried with military honours in the presence of their families. Also attending was the sole surviving member of their last patrol, Sapper Edgar Mick Dennis, MM. Soldiers from the Special Air Service Regiment and the 1st and 2nd Commando Regiments provided the funeral party. Lance Corporal Walklate and Private Eagleton were captured and killed by Japanese soldiers during an eight man Z Special Unit patrol during World War Two. They were thought to be lost at sea, before evidence discovered by the Australian Army's Unrecovered War Casualties Unit lead to the discovery of their remains on Kairiru Island.

The Australian Prime Minister's XIII got their first look at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby in their only training session before the match against the PNG PM's XIII.
The team trained well, in stifling conditions mid-morning, and the training session was followed by a coaching clinic with almost 400 school children from local schools in Port Moresby.
In the afternoon, the team travelled to the Bomana War Memorial (part of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission), where more than 3,500 Australians are buried, with an average age of 22.
The Memorial marks the spot where the most amount of Australians killed in any war are buried, in the one place. It was a moving experience, with Australian Rugby League Commission Chair, John Grant, joining coach Mal Meninga and captain Greg Inglis to lay a wreath and mark a moment's silence.

The cemetery contains the graves of those who died in the fighting in the former Territory of Papua and on Bougainville Island. We visit this cemetery on the last day of hiking the Kokoda Track with Australian Kokoda Tours.
