While the citadel in Bastia evokes the long domination of the island by the Genoese, the citadel of Bonifacio can lay claim to being the first fortified town in Corsica. In the name of the Pope, Lord Boniface ordered the building of a fortress in 830 to which he then gave his name. It was later modified and enlarged to keep up with military technical advances. Situated to the west of the town high on a narrow plateau, the citadel was built to protect the southern coast from the incursions of the Saracens.
Built in the 9th century, Bonifacio Citadel is located on a sandstone promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Today, it is more like a museum or a mini village packed with sun-bleached ramshackle houses. Walk the narrow passages to view artisans forging knives and carving wooden goods, and jewelers offering fashions made with the remarkably deep red coral indigenous to the area.

Built in the 9th century, Bonifacio Citadel is located on a sandstone promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Today, it is more like a museum or a mini village packed with sun-bleached ramshackle houses. Walk the narrow passages to view artisans forging knives and carving wooden goods, and jewelers offering fashions made with the remarkably deep red coral indigenous to the area. Many restaurants, shops, and cafés line the walkways with outdoor seating areas overlooking the Mediterranean. Stroll the maze of alleyways with decorations and designs that go back to medieval times complete with a historical marine cemetery.
The city of Bonifacio is split into two sections. The vieille ville (old town), or la Haute Ville (the Upper city), on the site of a citadel, is located on the promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The citadel was built in the 9th century with the foundation of the city. The Citadel has been reconstructed and renovated many times since its construction and most recently was an administrative center for the French Foreign Legion. Today it is more of a museum. Historically most of the inhabitants have resided in the Haute ville under the immediate protection of the citadel. The harbor facilities and residential areas below, la marine, line the narrow shelf of the inlet and extend for some distance up the valley, giving the settlement a linear appearance and creating a third residential section limited by St. Julien on the east.
The city and its fortifications also extend for some distance along the cliff-tops, which are at about 70 meters (230 ft) elevation. The cliffs have been undercut by the ocean so that the buildings, which have been placed on the very lip of the precipice, appear to overhang it. The appearance from the sea is of a white city gleaming in the sun and suspended over the rough waters below.

Bonifacio is a town on the southern tip of the French island of Corsica. It’s known for its lively marina and medieval clifftop citadel. The 13th-century Bastion de l’Etendard houses a small museum with exhibits on the town’s history. L’Escalier du Roi d’Aragon is 187 ancient steps carved into the cliff face. To the southeast, the uninhabited Lavezzi Islands, a nature reserve, have granite boulders and sandy beaches.
The town of Bonifacio is at the southern tip of Corsica (just 12 km from Sardinia) which help give Bonifacio and its harbour a rather exclusive, sophisticated Italian feel - above all around the elegant quay with its palm trees and expensive restaurants. The marina, the citadel and old town, and the views across the harbour and surrounding cliffs are the individual highlights of your visit, but it is the atmosphere and Mediterranean ambiance that will stay longest in your memory.
With a backdrop of cliffs and the citadel above, there are also plenty of bars and restaurants around the harbour to choose from (many rather expensive) this will quickly put you in holiday mood! (Be aware that parking here is very expensive and so choose the car park on the edge of town which is slightly cheaper.) From the port you can also organise your boat trips along the coast or a ferry south to visit Sardinia. We enjoyed the short tour - you get lovely views back onto the town, as well as a good view of the amazing cliffs and small beaches nearby.
Climb next to explore the citadel and historic old town of Bonifacio. Although the climb is quite step you are rewarded with lovely coastal views to distract attention from your legs! Bonifacio is set high on sheer white cliffs which continue around the coast. You can see the famous 'grain of sand' rock in the sea just off the coast from here. Pass through a gateway through the the original walls to discover a picturesque warren of narrow streets and alleys enclosed by the sturdy walls of the citadel. Keep an eye out for the house where Napoleon spent a couple of months with relatives as you wander the streets (Rue des Empereurs).
This medieval old-town in Bonifacio is the oldest town in Corsica and has many tall houses along cobbled streets in a spectacular setting along the top of the cliffs of the white limestone peninsula. The town is split into two main parts with the main town near the main gateway and then a walk to the end of the peninsula here there are military fortifications and a cemetary which is the most southerly in Europe and one of several in France which are built in magnificent locations overlooking the coast, the perfect place to be buried!
There are several individual sights of interest such as a couple of churches, and lots of quaint streets with interesting architectural feautures to admire. Our personal favourite street is Rue du Palais-de-Garde. You can also visit the Bastion d'Etenard (the stronghold of the standard). The publicity describes this as fortifications with terraced gardens but the gardens were almost entirely neglected during our visit. It did however have some excellent views and only cost 2.50 euros so .
Another popular site in Bonifacio is the 'Staircase of the King of Aragon', a steep staircase cut into the cliff below the old town. A small entrance charge is payable but the staircase is highly recommended. Be warned though it is very steep and the steps are uneven. The highlight for us turned out to be the walk up the hillside opposite the citadelle for some incredible view over the citadelle and the white limestone cliffs. When you visit Bonifacio on an evening the citadelle and some of the cliffs are illuminated giving them a quite different atmosphere to that of the daytime.

We went to Bonifacio which is the city at the southern end of Corsica. From the citadel lowest wall, we could see the island of Sardinia on the other side of the sea. This other island is part of Italy.
We walked in the citadel city and went shopping a little bit for souvenir.

BONIFACIO PLAGE DU FAZZIO'
La spiaggia di Fazziò è raggiungibile dal sentiero di Strada Vecia. Una passeggiata nella gariga caratterizzata da una flora ricca e prospettive stupende.
Proprio come una meritata ricompensa, la spiaggia di Fazziò si raggiunge dopo un’ora di cammino da Bonifacio oppure trenta minuti partendo dalla spiaggia di Paragan.
Dopo aver ammirato la cittadella, il faro della Madonetta e le grotte marine, un bel tuffo è l’ideale. Questa spiaggia è meno frequentata rispetto alle “spiagge star” di Bonifacio e offre un fondale marino stupendo con posidonia e tantissimi pesci.

The Fazziò beach can be reached from the Strada Vecia path. A walk in the garrigue characterized by rich flora and wonderful perspectives.
Just like a well-deserved reward, Fazziò beach can be reached after an hour's walk from Bonifacio or thirty minutes from Paragan beach.
After admiring the citadel, the lighthouse of the Madonetta and the sea caves, a nice dive is the ideal. This beach is less frequented than the star beaches of Bonifacio and offers a wonderful seabed with posidonia and lots of fish.

La plage de Fazziò est accessible depuis le chemin Strada Vecia. Une promenade dans la garrigue caractérisée par une riche flore et de magnifiques perspectives.
Tout comme une récompense bien méritée, la plage de Fazziò est accessible après une heure de marche de Bonifacio ou trente minutes de la plage de Paragan.
Après avoir admiré la citadelle, le phare de la Madonetta et les grottes marines, une belle plongée est l’idéal. Cette plage est moins fréquentée que les plages étoiles de Bonifacio et offre un magnifique fond marin avec de la posidonie et beaucoup de poissons.

The marine cemetery of Bonifacio will reveal to you the perilous journeys that the sailors made to reach these shores, as well as the ornate tombs of the brave souls who did not survive. You will discover the true meaning of the sea for the city and enjoy a sumptuous show, during the sunset over the Mediterranean Sea.
The marine cemetery is built on a small plateau, near the site of the old convent of St. Francis. You may find traces of an old military barracks, which once hosted the French paratroopers regiment of the foreign legion. Today, hundreds of mausoleums and elaborate tombs populate these places, in long lines facing the setting sun. This cemetery is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque in the Mediterranean. You can spend a moment reading the names and dates engraved on the stones, and imagine the lives that could have had the sailors buried here.
From anywhere in the cemetery, you can enjoy a stunning coastal view of the turquoise waters and waves crashing against the cliffs, particularly impressive at sunset on a clear day. Nearby, look for the 14th-century Saint Francis Church and see the giant citadel overlooking the city. The marine cemetery is free and open all day. It is a few minutes from downtown Bonifacio, at the end of a path uphill. The cemetery is also in the immediate vicinity of many of the city's most impressive cultural sites, including the powerful citadel that houses the old town.

Located at the very southernmost tip of Corsica, Bonifacio is a good location for accessing great beaches both on the south east and south west coasts of the island. Several beaches near Bonifacio are exposed to strong and reliable winds, making them suitable for water sports such as windsurfing and kite surfing. Others are more sheltered, so ideal for swimming and snorkeling. As with many beaches in Corsica, those near Bonifacio are largely undeveloped so retain their wild beauty, and are endowed with sparkling turquoise waters and white sands.
There are two small coves actually in Bonifacio (Plage de la Catena and Plage de l'Arinella), on the opposite side of the harbour to the Old Town (reached by a path next to the Aragiuone campsite). These can however be impacted by pollution from the harbour. There is also a tiny, pebbly cove below Bonifacio's citadel, accessed by steps from Avenue Charles de Gaulle. With a car, some great beaches in the vicinity of Bonifacio can be enjoyed. A sample is reviewed below, with useful information on beach facilities, directions and parking. Water sport enthusiasts should head to Piantarella beach to the east, or Tonnara beach to the west of Bonifacio. Rondinara beach is a famous and popular crescent-shaped beach, accessed via a scenic drive through coastal hillside. Roccapina beach is in another beautiful bay, accessed by a long dirt track, and renowned for its natural lion-shaped sculpture high in the granite cliffs above the beach. Calalonga is a smaller, quieter cove.

Bonifacio is a commune at the southern tip of the island of Corsica, in the Corse-du-Sud department of France. Its inhabitants are called Bonifaciens, feminine Bonifaciennes. The commune is the largest commune of Corsica.
Bonifacio is located directly on the Mediterranean Sea, separated from Sardinia by the Strait of Bonifacio. It is a city placed on the best and only major harbour of the southern coast and also is a commune covering a somewhat larger region including the offshore Isles Lavezzi, giving it the distinction of being the southernmost commune in Metropolitan France.
The southern coast in the vicinity of Bonifacio is an outcrop of chalk-white limestone, precipitous and sculpted into unusual shapes by the ocean. Slightly further inland the limestone adjoins the granite of which the two islands, Sardinia and Corsica, are formed. The port of Bonifacio is placed on the Bay of Bonifacio, a drowned ravine of a fjord-like appearance separated from the ocean by a finger-like promontory 1,500 meters long and 200 meters wide. In prehistoric post-glacial times when sea levels were low and the islands were connected, the ravine was part of a valley leading to upland Corsica. The maximum draught supported by the harbor is 3.5 meters, more than ample for ancient ships and modern small vessels.

The region around Bonifacio is perhaps best known for having some of the most magnificent beaches on the island - indeed some of the best in the Mediterranean (see also Corsica beaches) - including those at Palombaggia and Saint Giulia. The beach at Rondinara, in a perfect natural bay, is simply stunning.

The Lavezzi Islands, a designated marine preserve, are just off Bonifacio and can be visited by boat.
Places of natural beauty in the region include the Col de Bavella and Alta Rocca
The prehistoric sites at Filitosa, Casteddu de Cucuruzzu and Palaghju provide an interesting insight into Corsica's long and colourful history.
The town is a major centre for sea based leisure activities such as yachting and diving. Be aware that the success of the yachting is partly due to the fact that Bonifacio is one of the windiest places in France! The setting of Bonifacio, the attractive beaches nearby and other local activities does mean the town gets rather busy in the summer months - not unusual in many of the towns in Corsica - but it is still highly recommended.
