The Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad is Iowa's only regularly operating tourist railroad. This line operates on a former segment of the Fort Dodge, Des Moines & Southern Railroad between Boone and Fraser. The railroad notably operates steam, diesel, and electric power somewhat regularly.

Chasing and Riding on the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad - May 25, 2013
[Watch in HD] On May 25th, 2013, Stephen Schmidt, Matt Spika, Todd Taylor, Max Wipperman, and myself met up in Boone, Iowa to chase the first steam excursion on the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad of the season. We also catch the Picnic Train with a former CN FP9A on the point. After the excursion returned, thanks to Max for getting us the tickets for free, we all got to ride the excursion again inside a Rock Island Caboose.
Boone Scenic Railroad
My grandfather was a brakeman and engineer with the Chicago NorthWestern Railroad out of Boone, Iowa, in the early 1900's. The Boone Scenic and Valley Railroad ride was awesome! My tour through the James H. Andrew Railroad Museum and History Center will involve another upload .. another day. A monster steam locomotive used to pull the train daily, but now only on the weekends because of the man-hours required to keep it fired up. At the end of this video one of the employees takes me to the shed to show it to me. Yep .. monster!

Boone & Scenic Valley JS-class 8419 Pulls Weekend Excursion Train Out of Boone, IA 5/28/16
Well after over ten years I've finally made it back to the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad! On the opening weekend of full operations, on May 28th, 2016, I rode the 1:30 excursion as it took passengers from the depot in Boone, IA, west to Fraser and back. Later, as the 4:00 excursion departed, I walked across Division Street and took some video as the train slowly heads out of town.
On Saturdays during the regular season (Memorial Day to Labor Day), the Boone & Scenic Valley operates its steam locomotive, Chinese JS-class 2-8-2 #8419. The engine was built brand-new for the railroad in 1988, from the Datong Locomotive Works in China. It represents one of nearly 2,000 engines of the type that were built between the 1950's and 80's, and were used in China for mainline freight trains as well as switching. Departing Boone, 8419 pulls the train west tender first. Although this looks pretty odd for us Americans, the Chinese actually ran steam engines like this all the time on their lines. Once reaching Fraser, the locomotive runs around the consist and then pulls the train back to Boone forward.
The consist features Boone's regular lineup of coaches, a concession car in the middle of the train, plus open air car Valley View, Rock Island extended vision caboose #17051, and Chicago & North Western bay-window caboose #11136. In addition, a former South Shore interurban car #38 was also in the consist. This particular car has been converted into a non-powered trailer coach by the railroad.

Happy 6th Birthday Mars!
Mars loves everything trains, so my husband and I took him to the only place in the Midwest one can ride a steam engine “Boone and Scenic Valley River Road.” We had a wonderful time. The most fun part of riding the trains has to be crossing the Bass Point Creek High Bridge. Mars loves high places, being up there was super thrilling.
Before MZM: The busy Boone Subdivision, August 2012
In between chasing the Union Pacific 844 and visiting the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad back in 2012, there were multiple times railfanning the Boone Subdivision of the former Chicago and Northwestern Railway. From the railroad town of Boone to the famous Kate Shelley High Bridge, we catch a variety of Union Pacific freight along the busy mainline.

HD - Boone & Scenic Valley 6540 on the 5:30 Dinner
I shot this back in September one weekend when I was volunteering over at the Boone & Scenic, although since I was still technically on duty, I had my cousin video this for me (I'm the guy in the orange shirt flagging the crossing). This train was a sold out, specially chartered train for a wedding party. Engineer Butler brings in the two car consist with the ex-VIA Rail FP9A leading the way with an ex-AMTK K5LA.
Here is the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad website link, regular season is from Memorial Day through the last weekend in October.
