Borrego Palm Canyon Campground in Borrego Springs California is located in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park which is the largest state park in California and offers full hookup RV and tent sites. several camping loops including segregation of RV sites from tent sites makes this a popular destination in the desert for three season camping (not in summer unless you like it hot). Hiking trails depart from this location and off-road warriors are only minutes from many popular trails for vehicles.
Shade structures are available at the tent camping areas.

Borrego Palm Canyon Trail
The Borrego Palm Canyon Trail is one of the most popular trails at the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The trailhead is next to the campground and there is parking for day hikers. There is a fee of about $8.00-$10.00. No dogs allowed on the trail. Best times to go is in spring about end of March and Beginning of April when the wildlfower are blooming. At times there are pools of water to refresh but don't count on them so much. the hike to the first palm oasis is 1.5 miles. If you are really lucky you might see a Big Horn sheep. I was very lucky they were only a few feet away.

Borrego Palm Canyon fire in the first grove
Borrego Palm Canyon first grove fire yesterday afternoon most likely human caused due to it not being fire season and no lightening.
Reserve Manager Jim Dice: Palm trees are rarely killed by fire and will generate new leaves from the crown rather quickly. The trunks, however, will be blackened and the skirts of dead leaves will be gone up to the current height of the trees. Biggest loss, besides the temporary aesthetic one, is to wildlife habitat. Many species of birds and some bats use the skirts of dead leaves as nesting and roost sites. Owls, orioles, roadrunners and ravens, among others use the skirts.
[Butterfield Trail] Anza-Borrego: Font's Point, Culp Valley, & Vallecito Springs (Days 1 & 2) [4K]
The route is prolific in interest to the naturalist, the mineralogist, and all who love to contemplate nature in her wildest varieties, and throughout the whole 2,700 miles the interest is not allowed to flag. I have found the deserts teeming with curious plants and animal life, the mountain passes prolific in the grandest scenery, and the fruitful valleys suggestive on an earthly paradise; - Waterman L. Ormsby, The Butterfield Overland Mail printed in the New York Herald, Thursday, 11 November 1858.
The Butterfield Overland Mail Stagecoach Route was the first interstate system in the United States of America, and pivotal in our development as a coast-to-coast thriving economic powerhouse... it was the predecessor to the Pony Express, railways, and the interstate systems we all use today.
In April and May of 2018, I traversed a large section of the trail from Southern California to Texas. This is my account of the adventure... enjoy!
Day 1 kicked off by getting on the road, and joining my cousin and friend at Alps Village in Palm Desert. From there it was down the highway, passing the Salton Sea, and leaving the Coachella Valley behind.
I traveled to Font’s Point, one of the most iconic areas in Anza Borrego to watch a joint sunset and moonrise.
Camped at Culp Valley camping area, the highest elevation campground in the park, and enjoyed the Dark Sky night sky.
Finally linked up with the trail and pushed farther down the road to the location of the Vallecito Stage Station, my first stop at an actual station from the original trail!

Anza Borrego Desert - Hellhole Canyon
Most of the best hikes in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park are to cool, shady places like oases, slot canyons and groves of palm trees. For the latter, the best known location is Borrego Palm Canyon, at the edge of San Ysidro Mountain near Borrego Springs, and there are several similar ravines nearby; another, also easily explored, is Hellhole Canyon, the next drainage south.
The palms are found about one mile from the mouth of the canyon, which upstream (the South Fork) borders Culp Valley, a popular camping location alongside Hwy S22. The enclosed part of the ravine is about 4 miles long and contains several groups of California fan palms, growing alongside a small stream, which flows below ground in some places, though forms permanent pools at others, and at one point tumbles 20 feet into a rocky grotto, lined by ferns (Maidenhair Falls).
If you are very fortunate, you may encounter a herd of bighorn sheep in the area.
