Seoul to ring in 2020 with the annual bell ringing ceremony at Bosingak Pavilion
2020 시작 알리는 '보신각 타종행사'
To witness Korea's traditional new year bell-ringing ceremony... central Seoul is already packed with people who gathered at the Bosingak Pavilion.
Our Lee Kyung-eun has been standing by to give a sneak peek of the scene.
Kyung-eun, how are things looking at the moment?
Hi Daniel, preparations are getting in full swing for the iconic bell ringing ceremony that will kick off in about 2 hours.
Here, Jongno-gu District, is actually one of the busiest areas in downtown Seoul, and tonight, it is going to be THE epicenter of New Year’s Day celebrations with about one-hundred thousand people expected to ring in together 2020.
So definitely, it's going to be a big event.
Now to tell you why this event is so significant.
The tradition of ringing the bell 33 times dates all the way back to the Joseon Dynasty when it was struck that many times to announce the opening of all gates in Seoul back then.
But now, the auspicious tolling of Bosingak can only be heard during this time of the year, and that's what makes it a year-long awaited event.
And it's also a special experience for people from around the world. Take a listen.
So it's our first time here and we are on our vacation as a family and we just want to know how Koreans celebrate new year's together.
I'm here to celebrate new year's eve in the traditional Korean way with my friends, So we are here to see the bell ringing ceremony and I am really looking forward to it.
Every year, the city invites some famous personalities to ring the bell along with government officials.
They come from various fields.
Online stars, athletes and more.
Who's in the line-up tonight?
Well, we have a very special guest the giant penguin character Pengsoo.
For those that don't know, Pengsoo is a YouTube star, and one of the most popular characters in South Korea for its unique sense of humor.
Also, this year, there was a last minute addition to the line-up, with Major League Baseball player Ryu Hyun-jin confirmed to join the ceremony just two days ago.
Other citizen representatives include the criminal psychologist Lee Soo-jung, who has contributed to solving high profile crimes in the country,... and disability rights lawyer Kim Dong-hyun.
Seoul mayor Park Won-soon will also attend.
And right after the 10-second countdown to midnight,... the 17 participants will ring the bell 33 times - wishing for the prosperity of the nation and the people.
Plus, the night will be full of music and K-pop concerts, so if you come tonight, you can enjoy a fun, exciting night
But it will probably best to leave your car behind, because starting 11 PM, cars will be restricgted in parts of Jongno-gu District.
But public transportation will operate until 2 AM.
That's all I have for now, but I will bring more updates in our next newscast.

Bosingak Belfrey (Seoul, South Korea)
Bosingak is a bell pavilion in Seoul. It was originally built in 1396, but it was destroyed in a fire. The bell was rebuilt in 1468 and is now in the national museum. The bell in the belfrey was built in 1985 with funds raised by the public.
The bell was used to keep time during the Joseon Dynasty. There were 4 gates in Seoul where people could go in and out. At 4 a.m. the bell would ring 33 times and the gates would open. At 10 p.m. the bell would ring 28 times and the gates would close.
Bosingak Belfrey is Seoul-si Monument No. 10
I was lucky to get there for the bell ringing ceremony. There is a bell ringing ceremony held daily (except Mondays) at 11:30am. I got there a little bit late, but was able to see the whole ceremony.
Filmed on Sept 6 2014 using an ipad mini. Edited in imovie for ipad.

Jongno District was part of the capital city of Joseon Dynasty, so it has been center of the city for 600 years until now.
Jongno holds four of the five Grand Palaces of Seoul, Gyeongbok-gung, Changdeok-gung, Changgyeong-gung, and Gyeonghui-gung.
And has Jongmyo shrines, temples, historic neighborhoods, and other traditional sights.
So many things to see here.
If you are looking for traditional side of Seoul, I think Jongno is the Must-see place.

2018 Countdown and ringing in Bosingak Pavilion in Seoul
'굿바이 2017' 오늘 자정 보신각 타종행사
People around the world are celebrating or will be celebrating the ringing in of 2018.
It will be Korea's turn in about six hours from now.... and events are being held all across the country.
One of the most famous places to be in Korea as the clock strikes midnight is the Bosingak Pavilion in central Seoul.
People are gathering there already,... including our very own own Kim Hye-sung.
And we're connected live to her right now.
Hyesung, how's it looking there?
Hi Minji.
The sun has just set for the last time in 2017, and we are getting closer and closer to 2018.
Behind me is the Bosingak Pavilion, where the bell-ringing ceremony will take place in about six hours.
////
People have been gradually trickling in to celebrate the New Year with their family and loved ones.
I got a chance to talk to few of the earlycomers, take a listen.
(English)-
During New Year I usually spend my time at home. So I mean, coming here I expect to be different, like exciting, and I would like to discover how Koreans spend their time during New Year and New Year's Eve.
(Korean)-
There are only seven hours left and it feels quite unreal. So I came here to watch the bell ringing. In the upcoming year, I hope I can start a new family
Wow, I can sure feel the excitment over there. And Hyesung, can you explain to us some of the details of the event there?
Yeah,
The official ceremony will begin at 11:30 p.m sharp.
It′s going to be a night full of performances including a rockband.
And the highlight of course, is the bell-ringing ceremony.
/// ///
It holds a special meaning here in Korea.
Built in the 14th century, the bell will be rung 33 times, wishing prosperity and peace for the nation and its people.
Five city government officials including the Seoul mayor and eleven citizen representatives will ring the bell.
These citizen representatives include 89 year old Lee Yong-soo, who actively spoke out about her experience... victimized by Japan during its colonial rule of Korea as one of the so-called comfort women, and Korean-Nigerian model Han Hyun-min.
/// ///
One thing to note, with around 100-thousand people expected to come out tonight, traffic around the area will be restricted between 11 p.m. and one-thirty a.m.
Public transportation, including the subway, has been extended to 2am.
That's all I have for now.
I'll have more for you guys later tonight during the New Year's special.
Back to you, Minji.
That was our Kim Hye-sung at the Bosingak Pavilion. Thank you.

South Korea Vlog 14: NYE 2018 in Seoul
To ring in 2019, I celebrated at the Floating Palace New Year's Countdown Party with GSM in Seoul. I squeezed loved ones, toasted a sky set ablaze with fireworks, and danced the night away. It was the perfect way to enter the new year, and one of the best NYE celebrations I've ever experienced. 2019 is already shaping up to be a year of promise, and I look forward to sharing my adventures with you.
On that note, HAPPY NEW YEAR! Thanks, as always, for following me en route.

For that we connect to our Kim Hye-sung standing by there for us tonight.

Hi guys.

2 minutes at Jonggak - ???????? TRAVEL KOREA
See what it's like to sit at Jonggak for 2 minutes in this video. Just another day in Seoul...
The tall building is the Samsung Jongno Tower and the older traditional looking building on the right is the Bosingak. The Bosingak is a bell pavilion which has history that goes back to 1396. The structure has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over the centuries. The most current structure is from the late 1800s.
I always love the mixture of old and new architecture and design in Seoul. It is truly a beautiful thing to see and experience.
Thank you for watching, we really appreciate the support!

Welcoming the new year at Seoul's Bosingak Pavilion
보신각에서 새해맞이...'제야의 종' 10만명 인파 예상
People all across the nation are ready to celebrate the coming of a new year.
Our reporters are braving the subzero temperatures to show us how Koreans are partaking in the celebrations.
First let's turn to our Park Hee-jun at the iconic Bosingak Pavilion.
Hee-jun, how are things looking over there?
Hello, Daniel.
It's that time of the year... here at the Bosingak Pavilion,... which is one of the most popular spots in the country for new year's eve.
We're expecting at least 10-thousand people tonight.
So it's going to get crazy as we draw closer to midnight.
There are still a couple of hours left until the bell is struck, but the crowds milling around are clearly excited and ready to celebrate.
There's no way to really escape the freezing cold, even if you wear lots of layers and use heat packs.
But that's not stopping families, couples and friends from coming out on the street and having a blast in the final moments of 2018.
Let me share with you the excitement here at Bosingak.
Take a listen.
It's my first time experiencing this event, so I'm excited to be here, and just excited to see all the stuff that's going tonight.
I came from Busan. I’ve only seen this event on TV, and it’s my first time to come in pe rson. I can really feel the year-end atmosphere, and I'm so excited. I'll be watching the bell ring tonight, and I hope everything goes well next year.
I can definitely see the year-end vibe over there.
Anything particularly special about this year?
Well this event isn't new and we've been covering it every year.
But I can tell you that it's going to be more exciting and livelier than ever.
Let me run you through some of the key events.
Here's tonight's timetable.
As you can see, it's not so different from the usual line-up,... but there is something a little bit extra.
Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the March First Independence Movement and the establishment of the country's provisional government.
So we have special events prepared for that.
But of course, the highlight is the actual bell-ringing ceremony.
16 people, including the Seoul mayor, will be ringing the bell.
And this year's 11 notable citizens include Lee Guk-jong a surgeon best known for saving a North Korean soldier who was shot while defecting to the South,... and speed-skater Lee Sang-hwa who's a world record holder and won two gold medals for South Korea at the Winter Olympics.
They're going to strike the bell 33 times,... which is a Buddhist tradition.
And for that, I will be back.
Happy New Year's, Daniel.

Hey, Daniel.
Happy almost-new year's to you.
It's that time of the year... here at the Bosingak Pavilion.
This is one of the most popular spots in the country for new year's eve.
And because of the massive number of people expected here tonight... the city has been regulating the perimeters.
There are a couple of hours left until the actual event begins.
But crowds are beginning to build up as we speak.
Since this afternoon, I've been seeing people taking photos with their friends, families, and lovers.
They've also been reflecting on everything that's happened this year.
Let me share with you some of their thoughts.
Take a listen.
A lot of things have happened this year. I'm glad they didn't result in anything unfortunate. I hope only good things happen next year.
I'm glad that my family was happy and well this year. 2019 is the year of the pig, which is my zodiac sign as well as my son's. I think good things are in store for us next year, and I hope my son studies harder.
I can definitely see the year-end vibe over there.

Jongno (literally Bell Street) is a trunk road and one of the oldest major east–west thoroughfares in Seoul, South Korea. Jongno connects Gwanghwamun Plaza to Dongdaemun.
The area surrounding Jongno is a part of Downtown Seoul and one of the most prominent cultural, historical, and financial area. Many important landmarks are located along its length, including the Bigak pavilion at Sejongno, the Bosingak belfry (hence the street's name), Tapgol Park (Pagoda Park), the Jongmyo royal ancestral shrine, and the aforementioned Dongdaemun (Great East Gate). Seoul Subway Line 1 passes under Jongno. The western end of Jongno is serviced by Gwanghwamun Station (Seoul Subway Line 5), and Jongno 3-ga Station is serviced by Subway Lines 1, 3, and 5.
