ANASAZI STATE PARK MUSEUM Ancestral Puebloan Hop Zuni Acoma Pueblo Mesoamerica Boulder, Utah USA
ANASAZI STATE PARK MUSEUM
Boulder, Utah USA
WELCOME TO ANASAZI
STATE PARK MUSEUM
Explore an Ancestral Puebloan
(Anasazi) village that was likely
occupied from A.D. 1050 to 1200,
and one of the largest communities
west of the Colorado River.
Outside the museum, tour a
life-sized, six-room replica of an
ancient dwelling and view a portion
of the original site. Inside, view
artifacts excavated from this
site and learn the lifeways
of these people.
DISCOVER
The Coombs Site is unique in
comparison to many other
Ancestral Puebloan
sites in the southwest.
It is located near what is considered
to be the border of the
Ancestral Puebloan and
Fremont cultures.
The Fremont were a prehistoric
group that occupied most of
Utah during the same period as
the Ancestral Puebloans.
The result is a blending of traits
or a prehistoric “melting pot”
that is reflected in the artifacts
recovered from this site, as well
as in the architecture.
In addition, elements from other
branches of the Ancestral Puebloan
have been identified here,
suggesting the presence ofan
extensive trade network.
Opened to the public as a state park in 1970.
Park Elevation: 6,700 feet
Who were the Anasazi?
Anasazi is a Navajo word interpreted
to mean ancient enemies or
enemy ancestors, but is now
referred to as the ancient ones.
Pueblo Indians, who also inhabited
the area have various names for
their ancestors.
The Hopi prefer the word,
Hisatsinom, for their ancestors
and strongly object to the term “Anasazi”.
The Hopi prefer not to call anyone enemy.
What the Anasazi called themselves
will probably never be known.
More recently, the term Ancestral Pueblo
is used, which suggests common
ties with modern Pueblos.
Although Ancestral Pueblo is probably
more accurate and
becoming more preferred.
The term Anasazi has been used
for many decades, and is still generally
accepted. It refers to village dwelling
farmers who existed on the
Colorado Plateau between
A.D. 1 and 1300.
Most of the sites were left after A.D. 1300,
but a few continued to flourish,
Hopi, Zuni, and Acoma to the west,
and eastern Pueblo villages
along the Rio Grande River.
Ancestral Puebloans were likely
the descendants of an Archaic Desert
culture known as the Basket maker cultures.
Some archaeologists claim they
may have migrated from Mesoamerica.
They eventually cultivated crops,
and the primary products were corn,
beans, squash, and cotton.
They domesticated the turkey, and
continued to gather wild plant foods
and hunt game in order
to supplement their diet.
The Ancestral Puebloans are known
for their extraordinary building techniques.
From pit houses to multi-storied
cliff dwellings, these structures remain
as a tribute to their outstanding
architectural abilities.
The Ancestral Puebloans were also
highly skilled potters.
Beautifully decorated pots, bowls,
ladles, mugs, and other elaborate
ceramic objects have been found
in sites throughout the region.

Art Gallery | Denver | Castle Rock | Evergreen | Boulder | Brighton | Colorado
Hal Terrance has been involved with art, theatre and jazz (as a fan) since the mid 1950's. He studied in England, Japan and the U.S.; working with Stole Kyllingstad and Ed Dwight. Hal moved to Colorado in the early 1970s to pursue a career in theatre and art. He has acted, directed and designed scenery/properties and sound for many of the area theatre companies while pursuing his career as a sculptor. In the mid-80's he worked for the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. In 1998 the Denver Critics voted Hal one of the three best actors in Denver. Hal sculpted primarily in marble since 1978 but an auto accident in 1992 made it very difficult to work in stone. He had been experimenting with Spackle and Styrofoam for stage statuary so it was a natural transition to this versatile medium. Hal's work runs the gamut from portrait sculpture to surrealism and abstract and has been influenced by artists from Michelangelo to Klee, but his totally unique medium, style and technique stand alone in the Art World. His sculpture subjects are varied, but a frequent theme of triumph over hardship is evident. His spackle encased Styrofoam images convey the impression of alabaster, the play of light and dark provoking a sense of movement and emotion in the subject of the piece. Faces peer in three-dimensional contrast from sculpted countenances mounted on canvas.*

Scott Kirby interviews Steve Polsley about the B-17
To learn more about Scott Kirby, visit his website:
Scott's music is available through CD Baby:
A native of Ohio, Scott Kirby began his study of music at the age of six, and continued formal piano instruction for seventeen years. He worked under Robert Howat of Wittenberg University of Ohio, and Sylvia Zaremba at the Ohio State University. After obtaining an English degree from Ohio State University, Kirby moved to New Orleans and began his professional music career, as a street performer. In the following four years, he recorded the complete rags of Scott Joplin, and made his debut at all of the major ragtime festivals in the United States, as well as festivals in Belgium, France, Norway, New Zealand, and Hungary.
Kirby has served as Musical Director of the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival in Sedalia, MO, and of the Rocky Mountain Ragtime and American Music Festival in Boulder, CO, as well as director of the San Juan Islands Ragtime Institute. His appearances include a segment on CBS News Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood in 1998, and at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. Kirby co-founded a record company (Viridiana Productions, L.L.C.), has made 25 recordings, and has composed over 150 original works for piano and other instruments. Admired by fellow pianists including George Winston, and hailed by Time Magazine as an ace pianist, CBS News' Charles Osgood agreed that ...Critics call Scott Kirby one of the best interpreters of ragtime music on the scene today.
Kirby's artistic passion grew to include to visual art, and in 2005, while living in France, he completed 75 paintings and 28 piano compositions, including The Prairie Devotionals, The paintings (belonging to a set entitled Visions of the Great Plains) and the new musical works set the groundwork for his new multi-media project Main Street Souvenirs. Kirby now lives in Sandpoint with his wife Marie-Dominique and two daughters Sara and Leah-Marie, and divides his time between composing, painting, performing and teaching.
Kirby has achieved a rarified status as a performer of ragtime and related American styles. Considered Today's best player of Scott Joplin's music (Trebor Tichenor, author of Rags and Ragtime), Kirby has appeared at every major ragtime festival in the U.S., plus events in Hungary, Norway, New Zealand, France, England and Belgium. His unique presentation highlights the worlds of Classic Ragtime, New Orleans Jazz, and Blues, then expands to include the marches of John Philip Sousa, the songs of Stephen Foster, Latin-American styles, Afro-Cuban rhythms, European Romanticism, Rock & Roll and Original works ranging from the syncopated to the impressionistic. Kirby's sense of Americana is enhanced by his historical commentary, and also by his art work, a series of watercolors entitled Visions of the Great Plains, which he presents in either an accompanying exhibit or in a video presentation during the show.
Kirby also specializes in American and Pan-American musical traditions that span 150 years. From the inventive compositions of New Orleans genius Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Classic Ragtime, Cuban Danzas, Brazilian Tangos of Ernesto Nazareth and Creole styles from the Caribbean, to contemporary works by Kirby himself, the Pan-American umbrella is full of color and variety. Kirby weaves these styles together with historical and cultural background that shows the connections and cross-influences that have been occurring in the Western Hemisphere for hundreds of years, and have influenced not only American Popular Music, but also American Classical and Art Music composers.
Scott Kirby has composed over 150 works for solo piano and other instruments, which fall into several categories. The early works follow the example of Scott Joplin and the Classic Ragtime composers, but with a decidedly contemporary harmonic sensibility. Later, using Louis Moreau Gottschalk as a model, Kirby began to draw from a wider variety of Pan-American traditions, Latin-American rhythms, afro-caribbean syncopation, and European Romantic influence. This Terre Verde music naturally morphed into a new style that incorporated less syncopation but more distinctive melodic content - a new and highly romanticized Americana. Some of these works may even be considered rural impressionism, and many were directly inspired by the Great Plains and prairies of the heartland. Finally, the romantic sensibility, as well as Baroque, Classical, and even Pop Music influences, led into a Minimalist-Romantic language which draws heavily from the land-music connection, and from Kirby's own spiritual journey - one that (like his music) seeks truth in the process itself.

Places to see in ( Denver - USA )
Denver, the capital of Colorado, is an American metropolis dating to the Old West era. Larimer Square, the city’s oldest block, features landmark 19th-century buildings. Museums include the Denver Art Museum, an ultramodern complex known for its collection of indigenous works, and the mansion of famed Titanic survivor Molly Brown. Denver is also a jumping-off point for ski resorts in the nearby Rocky Mountains.
Denver is a vibrant city with plenty of attractions for visitors, plus a diverse collection of neighborhoods that can be attractions in themselves. Many of Denver's older areas are the perfect density for exploration; you'll find an interesting mix of apartments and homes with flowery front gardens, wide flagstone sidewalks, bright green lawns and big, shady trees. Capitol Hill, Highlands, Baker, Berkeley, Uptown, Sloan's Lake, Cheesman, Washington, City and Congress Parks are just some of the neighborhoods bustling with people and places to see.
Denver has many beautiful parks that are full of colorful gardens, meandering paths, crystal clear lakes, abundant wildlife and recreation opportunities. The city has a rich pioneer history, and there are plenty of museums where you can learn all about it. It's also a very environmentally conscious city, with one of the nation’s first municipal “Green Fleets”, public transit vehicles using hybrid and alternative fuel and a city tree-planting initiative. Hop on a green bus, grab a bike or just walk around to discover Denver.
Thanks to a re-urbanization of the city's central core, Denver now has name-worthy neighborhoods with flavors that are all their own – River North (RiNo) for hipster bars and eye-catching street art, Lower Highlands (LoHi) and South Broadway for great eateries and live music, Cherry Creek for glam, Lower Downtown (LoDo) for upscale restaurants and cocktail lounges as well as the Golden Triangle and Santa Fe for arts, theater and museums. In all, there's a neighborhood and a vibe for just about anybody.

ARTiculate @ Baton Rouge Gallery - Kelli Scott Kelley (Feb. 2015)
In this ARTiculate Artist Talk:
With her February 2015 exhibition, Heroes and Monsters, BRG Artist Member Kelli Scott Kelley uses illustrations to give faces to the creatures that intimidate and harass our culture. Throughout history, monsters have been used to identify a particular issue or incident. Kelley, fascinated by their metaphorical use, creates her own monsters that are delicate and striking, transforming atrocities such as war, environmental deterioration and greed into allegorical beasts. Kelley's work is primarily comprised of mixed media narrative paintings, drawing and objects. She has also collaborated to create video and performance works.
Kelli Scott Kelley, a BRG Artist Member since 2003, is a Baton Rouge native. She received her BFA from the Louisiana State University and her MFA at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Kelley's work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally in the Měsíc ve dne in Czeske Budejovice (Czech Republic), Bangalore University in Bangalore, India, The Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston (TX), Taylor Bercier Gallery, The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (Boulder, CO) and most recently The Martine Chaisson Gallery in New Orleans. In 2012, she was awarded a $32,000 ATLAS Grant (Awards To Louisiana Artists and Scholars) to complete her art book project, Accalia and the Swamp Monster. In September 2014, the LSU Museum of Art - in a joint event with LSU Press - began a travelling exhibition of the artworks featured in the book. Kelley is a Professor of Painting at Louisiana State University.

Meet Eric Fischl
Born in New York City, Eric Fischl received his B.F.A. degree from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia in 1972. Two years later he became an assistant professor at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, where he continued teaching until 1978. In the 1980s Fischl's large figurative paintings, aggressive in their confrontation with the viewer, began to receive substantial attention. Along with painting, he turned to photography and monotypes. His 1990 series of Beach paintings drew on photographic sources. Since the late 1970s, Fischl's work has been widely shown in solo and group exhibitions in the United States and Canada. Solo shows of his paintings were presented at the Dalhousie Art Gallery in Halifax, Galerie B in Montreal, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and Mary Boone Gallery in New York. In 1991 Fischl exhibited his monotypes at the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College.
