On The Scene OC visits the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, California for their free Family Fun Day. Held in the museum courtyard on the first Sunday of each month, Bowers Museum offers activities, music and snacks for both kids and their parents.
The Bowers Museum is located in Santa Ana, California, in the United States. The museum offers exhibitions, lectures, art classes, travel programs, children's art and music education programs, and other community events. The museum's philosophy is to help people learn about other cultures through their arts, and offer a greater understanding of themselves and an appreciation of the world.

about the artist
Carla Carli Mazzucato is a 20th-century Italian artist whose contributions to the world of contemporary art help define the modern expressionist movement.[1] Known for her unique style and bold color palette, her paintings are described by critics as dynamic,[2] graceful[3]... timeless,[4] and have been compared to the masterworks of Chagall, Renoir, Monet and Van Gogh.[5]
Mazzucato's art is part of numerous collections in Europe, North America and Asia. Her commissioned work, Evening at the Opera hangs in the Detroit Opera House and the artist's fourteen-painting contemporary interpretation of the Passion of Christ is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese collection installed in the church of Corpus Domini in Bolzano, Italy. Mazzucato was recognized as a leading contemporary artist by the SoHo Fine Arts Institute in New York City in 2000.
An extensive archive of Mazzucato's art can be found online,[6] and various collections have been published in book form.[7] The book, America—Celebration, published in 2011,[8] presents 61 paintings from the artist's America series as a tribute to the United States, the artist's adoptive country.
A 2007 documentary film, An Artist's Journey chronicles the life and art of Carla Carli Mazzucato.[9]

The terracotta warriors, which in my mind exemplify China and in most Americans' minds, better than anything else, except the Great Wall, and we couldn't bring the Great Wall here, so the terracotta warriors were a natural and we picked the period of the Olympics with the idea that America's interest in China would be the greatest in the summer 2008.

It just shows the magnitude of this culture and how this particular emperor, Emperor Qin, the first emperor of China, had a lasting impact that we even see today. Even the name China comes from his name. But his unification of the warring states and the currency, weights and measures, the language, everything had to do with this emperor. And so this was literally the start of the China we know today.

China's Terracotta army is on the move again.
A section of one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century 'The First Emperor: China's Terracotta Army', goes on display on May 18 in the Bowers Museum in California.
The world-famous terracotta warriors were buried alongside the First Emperor of Qin in readiness for the afterlife.
STORYLINE:
Often called the Eighth Wonder of the World, the Xian Terracotta Warriors are a symbol of Chinese culture.
More than a dozen of the terracotta warriors, crafted more than 2,000 years ago to protect their emperor in the afterlife, have arrived in the United States with a very different mission: that of cultural ambassador.
The 2,000-year-old life-sized clay statues of warriors, archers and chariot drivers go on display at the Bowers Museum as part of the largest US loan of the warriors in history.
Peter Keller, the Bowers Museum president, says that the terracotta soldiers are one of the most recognisable images from China for most Americans.
He says that their arrival in the US coincides with a increased interest in China.
The first warriors, unpacked at the Bowers museum last week, found themselves in a rather compromising position for soldiers charged with defending their emperor for all eternity.
Tight straps pinned them inside metal shipping containers, and their hands which once bristled with weapons were muffled with layers of thick white gauze.
A burly moving crew slid the statues, which weigh about 500 pounds each, out of their crates and gently lowered them six inches to the floor.
The Terracotta warriors were assembled to guard Qin's tomb during his afterlife.
