Joshua Tree National Park - Overnight Backpacking Trip
I went out with Matt and Hector for an overnight backpacking trip in Joshua Tree National Park. We checked out Keys View and Barker dam before spending a night on the Boy Scout Trail. The next day we went to the Wall Street Mill and checked out all the old mining equipment.

Hiking Joshua Tree National Park - Boy Scout Trail
This video describes the 9.6 mile out and back hike along Boy Scout Trail the way it was on 2-4-2017. We started at the Indian Cove backcountry board and climbed through the canyons past the intersection with the Big Pine trail but short of the intersection with the trail to Willow Hole. The hike is quite scenic and there are some areas to boulder scramble if you like, but there are stairs to go around these areas if you don't want to boulder scramble. The 9.6 miles took us about 4.5 hours to complete.

Trying to get one last hike in before the New Year proved to be a challenge. With bad weather rolling in (Big winter storm) shutting down roads and/or making certain hikes not as enjoyable we decided on doing a quick overnighter in Joshua Tree. With a few places set in mind we called the ranger station while en route asking about conditions. Dirt roads were closed, parking was overflowing, trails were covered in a few feet of snow with ice/slush or just plain undoable. The ranger at the office recommended the Boyscout Trail which would put us up in some snow and the mileage would vary depending on our start time. (we got a late start) This is how it went......

Brothers hike through the Wonderland of Rocks on Boy Scout Trail from Willow Hole to the peak of Queen Mountain in Joshua Tree National Park. Emboldened by their successful trip, Hank returns to the Park, with five friends, to attempt a one-way traverse across the desert through Rattlesnake Canyon and up Ryan Mountain.
WARNING: Hiking in the Wonderland of Rocks is more difficult than it looks, and people often need to be rescued when they don't bring sufficient water and navigation tools (topo map and GPS/compass). Be prepared and be careful.

March 2018 - a very windy overnighter on the Boy Scout Trail in Joshua Tree National Park. Original plan was to camp at Willow Hole, as our book suggested we could, but we soon found the area is only open for day use. We ended up camping back towards the Indian Cove trailhead.

Hiking Joshua Tree National Park - Willow Hole hike
This video describes the trail to Willow Hole the way it was on 1-10-2017. The 7 mile round trip out and back hike starts at the Boy Scout Trailhead off of Park Boulevard at the southern end of Boy Scout Trail. We did a little extra exploring up a side wash making our hike a little longer at 8 miles which took us 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete. The area is interesting as it is in the Wonderland Of Rocks where there are many huge rock formations and also a lot of nice Joshua Tree specimens. There was a good amount of water at Willow Hole considering it's desert location. If you wanted, and are an experienced scrambler, you can go past Willow Hole on the difficult Wonderland Connection that goes to Indian Cove via Rattlesnake Canyon.

Winter Backpacking Joshua Tree Nat'l Park After Recent Snowfall | California Riding and Hiking Trail
In this video I am joined by Christine of @This Girl Hikes and Jarl of Norwegian Xplorer (links to channels below) on a 3 day backpack over the NYE holiday 2019-2020. We found ourselves on this trip days after a rare winter storm had blanketed the park in snow. Lucky for us, there was still quite a bit hanging around for our trek. On days 1 & 2 we cover over 20 miles on the California Riding and Hiking Trail. Day 3 we travel off-trail and cross country making our way through a portion of the Jonny Lang Canyon before ending the trip for a total of 29 miles. Video is 4K.
