Breakneck Ridge and Wilkinson memorial hiking trail near cold spring, NY
Less then hour north from the skyscrapers of New York City, join me as I backpack one of the best hiking loops in the United States overlooking the scenic Hudson Valley River near Cold Spring, NY. This time I travel not only along the popular Breakneck Ridge route but also take an extended route via the Wilkinson Memorial trail. The rocky cliffs and steep ascents prove challenging but extremely rewarding as does the chance to view what appears to be an old fort and Bannerman Castle. We're greeted with many excellent views of the Hudson River including and of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge from a high wooden observation platform.
Breakneck Ridge Trail Hike - NYC Day Trip
It’s Memorial Day and we are going to hike the Breakneck Ridge trail with some friends. We all heard about this amazing hike just outside NYC so we took metro north from Grand Central station in the city, the ride is just under 2 hours. On weekends and holidays the train will stop right at the trail head in between Beacon and Cold Spring. The views from Breakneck ridge are spectacular! This is a must do as long as you’re not afraid of heights!

Hiking trip - Cold Spring, New York - FALL 2013
A short video of our trip to Cold Spring, New York, to see that last little bit of Fall.
Day 3: Allegany State Park New York North Country- Finger Lakes trail #1 (2-20-2017)
This is the 3rd say of my trip to Allegany State Park, New York (2-20-2017) which was supposed to be for cross country skiing. Since there is never any snow in New York anymore (and it certainly snows in Pennsylvania less often), I decided to hike a section of the North Country National Scenic Trail that I may not have hiked before. Dave joined me for a 12 mile morning hike on the central section of the Allegany State Park, NCT- also known as the Finger Lakes Trail and Trail #9. The trail is very well marked for the local ASP trail, the FLT (New York State Trail), and the NCT (National Trail). The hike began with some very interesting hummocky terrain (much like the land over a large are of underground mine subsidence, however this was likely due to the last glacial period. Chunks of glacial ice and permafrost under the soil melted, which caused the soil to subside forming an interesting pattern. There were many green mossy rocks, and then the trail began to look like the part I hiked the previous 2 days. When we arrived at the turn- around point I made a time lapse (10X) and silent of the hike back. After this I hiked in Allegheny National Forest (starting about 8 miles West on the North Country Trail from where this hike began (2 miles from New York, of the Pennsylvania side)- separate previously released video. This video was published on 4-29-2017 and completes the documentaries and short movies related to my 2017 trip to Allegany State Park, and Allegheny National Forest in the winter. If you want to see what snow is like in the area- check out some of my 2013 videos where the snow was about 1-2' deep (typical in the 2015 and before era).

My name is Rafael Santiago, I’ve been on my hair growth journey for quite a while now I wasn’t able to post month 1, 2,3,4,5. But Was about to record month 6-19 so far. My main objective was to grow out a man bun, didn’t want to go for the top knot look, but I do appreciate the style. I just rather had grown out my hair all together vs growing it out and not liking if the side were much shorter than the top. I’ve always wanted long hair as a kid, but my parents always made sure my hair was short and neat. I’ve gotten a hair car pretty much every 2-3 months till i turned 21 1/2, where I decided that I would be growing out my hair for the long run, the initial goal was the man bun, but I realized I want to go much further than that, so my new goal is to hit 2 years. I said I could decided to cut in on my 2 years, but i’m 100% most likely going to go for 3 years, I believe once you start something you should never stop. I’ve used certain hair products like EVO liquid hair curlers, and Biotin, i’m not sure if the Biotin had much influence in my journey, but i’m happy I’ve had the chance to experiment with it, currently (12-21-17) going to be experimenting with Black Castro Oil and see the effects it has on my hair.

Cold Spring Day Trip + Primark Fail
What up what up!
This past weekend I took a lil day trip to Cold Springs, a cute antique town here in New York. I stopped by some of the thrift shops and stumbled into Pink Olive, a shop that was celebrating their 1 year anniversary in Cold Spring!
After Cold Spring, I stopped by Primark in hopes to do some shopping in anticipation of my visit to New Orleans but unfortunately, that trip was a bust. I did get a few accessories but hopefully, the spring will give us more options in larger sizes *FINGERS CROSSED*
I'm off to D.C this weekend and then it's time for some fun in the sun in Florida and I can't describe how ready I am for beach, warmth and some tasty virgin pina colada's!
I have some exciting news so stay tuned to my Instagram this upcoming week!

Cold Spring Harbor, New York
Cold Spring Harbor was named after the naturally cold freshwater springs that flow in the area. Its economy mainly tied to milling and port activities, it rose in prominence as a whaling community in the mid-nineteenth century. After the decline of whaling in the 1860s, it became a resort town with several hotels. In the 20th century it became known as the site of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, although the laboratory itself is located in the adjacent village of Laurel Hollow in Nassau County which was called Cold Spring, before incorporation.
Today it is primarily a bedroom community of New York City, with a small central business area running along Route 25A, and is home to many educational and cultural organizations: the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum, the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery and Aquarium, Dolan DNA Learning Center, the Uplands Farm Sanctuary (home of The Nature Conservancy's Long Island chapter), and a gallery run by the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities.

West Point Foundry Preserve | Cold Spring, NY
The West Point Foundry was a pioneer of the American Industrial Revolution.
Located a short distance up the Hudson River from NYC, this bustling ironworks produced military armaments such as the famous Parrott Gun. The history of the foundry is rich with American ingenuity and sweat equity.
Check out the short easy day hike thru the Hudson Highlands that include:
Replica of the original turret platform that was used to test large Parrott Guns
Administrative Building beside the original cupola
Waterwheel Sculpture to commemorate the place where the Foundry once stood
Thanks to Scenic Hudson for preserving the past so that future explorers can enjoy learning the role local Hudson Valley citizens played in early America!
Cheers,
Joe Mc
